‎Russia and the Middle East: Towards a new foreign policy.‎

‎Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. [vii], 296 p. Russia and the Middle East: Towards a new foreign policy. The end of the Soviet Union precipitated a reassessment of Russia s foreign policy in many parts of the world, particularly the Middle East. This text looks at how a once cherished commitment to ideological goals and superpower rivalry with the United States was replaced, after 1991, with a pragmatic foreign policy based on national interest, epitomized by the appointment of Yevgeni Primakov as foreign minister. The book examines Gorbachev s new thinking ; the foreign policy debates under President Yeltsin; and the warning of Russian influence over the Palestinians and its consequent exclusion from the secret Oslo records. Case studies of Russi a relations with Israel, Syria, Lebannon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Turkey and Iran provide the reader with a detailed analysis of the region s wider diplomatic and strategic concerns. Extensive use is made of both Russian and Arabic language sources and of interviews with Russian and Arab officials, including Yassir Arafat and Andrei Kozyrev.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 264 p., color ills. Chermayeff. Geismar symbols, logotypes and graphic design from the last five decades.= Chermayeff. Geismar son 50 yilin amblem, logo ve tasarimlari. [Exhibition catalogue]. Considered as one of the most brilliant graphic designers of the 20th century, Ivan Chermayeff has created a number of truly memorable designs with his partner Tom Geismar. Through his unique and exceptional work on the emblem, logo and corporate identity designs of Koç Holding and various other Koç companies, he has made it possible for the names of these institutions, and by extension Turkey, to be acknowledged by the world of design. Since its founding in 1957, Chermayeff & Geismar has pioneered a transformation in the practice of graphic design. Located in New York but working for clients in many countries, especially Turkey, they have pursued a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach across a broad range of projects and disciplines, from the development of scores of famous trademarks to the design of notable museum exhibitions, from hundreds of imaginative posters for cultural events to largescale artworks for distinguished architectural projects. Throughout all these tasks, Chermayeff & Geismar's work has remained consistent, not in style, but in its approach to design. Accepting the Modernist ideal that design is a problem-solving discipline, they have sought to humanize that ideal through humor, artistic invention and an entrepreneurial spirit.‎

‎Nickolas Muray. Portrait of a photographer.= Bir fotografçinin portresi. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 205 p., color and b/w photos. Nickolas Muray. Portrait of a photographer.= Bir fotografçinin portresi. [Exhibition catalogue]. Renowned as the most successful portrait and fashion photographer of New York in the 1920s, American-Hungarian photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) revolutionized photography with his use of natural color photography in advertising in the 1930s. For the first time ever, Muray's photographs can be seen at Pera Museum between January 25 and April 21, 2013. Curated by Salomon Grimberg, the exhibition brings together Nickolas Muray's photographs in a retrospective. Garnered from George Eastman House, the famous photography archive in the US, the Nickolas Muray Archive, which is under the direction of the Muray family, and various private collections, this selection summarizes Muray's career, covering nearly 50 years. Besides Muray's black-and-whites, the exhibition presents some of the color photographs that made him famous in Hollywood circles and the American advertising industry. Muray has photographed many famous actors, dancers, artists, and writers, from Greta Garbo to Marilyn Monroe, from Elizabeth Taylor to Martha Graham; he is also known for the first color photographs he took for famous brands such as Lucky Strike, Coca Cola, and General Foods. Published regularly in some of the most prominent magazines of his time like The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Dance, Shadowland, and Theater, these photographs are accompanied by the artist's portraits of Frida Kahlo, his great love.‎

Dichavicius' groundbreaking photography book "Ziedai tarp ziedu" ("Blossoms among Blossoms") was published in 1987. Four editions would soon follow. The book, dedicated to beauty of youth and nature, got positive reviews all over the world. 'Visions' by Rimantas Dichavicius is a set of unique 'photopaintings'. The artist molds double connotations, lyricism and symbolism in these works, creating a rich world of different forms and colors. It needs to be pointed out that 'Visions' not only come alive in this book, but have an artistic life of their own - these 'photopaintings' are being exhibited in various galleries of the world as separate art works. It took 24 years to complete the series 'Ziedai tarp Ziedu' Blossoms among Blossoms. Some photos combine two generations - mom and her daughter 20+ years later. The President of Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev approved the publication of the album, which was the first ever photography album published in Soviet Union to feature nude Photography. Exhibitions were held in many major cities throughout the Soviet Union.‎

There are sefâretnâme and arîza about Rasih Pasha's embassy. The works written by Ottoman ambassadors or their assistances about their journeys are called sefâretnâme. The embassy travel and Russian impressions have been transferred into sefâretnâme related to Rasih Pasha's Russian embassy. Rasih Pasha described the social, economic, military, administrative and economic aspects of Russia in detail which are not explained in sefâretnâme in his arîza. These works composed after Rasih Pasha's embassy to Russia have involved very important informations about Russian Empire at the end of XVIII. Century. It is seen that the development of Russia during I. Petro reached to the top towards the end of XVIII. Century time of the II. Catherine. III. Selim as an Ottoman King made use of the arîza written on Russian during his reconstruction movement known as Nizam-i Cedit movement. The Geisha opened in 1896 at Daly's Theatre in London's West End, produced by George Edwardes. The original production had the second longest run of any musical up to that time. The cast starred Marie Tempest and C. Hayden Coffin, with dancer Letty Lind and comic Huntley Wright. ‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 200 p., 9 numerous plans. Pasifik için mücadele. I. ve II. kisim. [= The struggle for the Pasific]. Translated to Turkish by Kur. Yzb. H[amza] Gürgüç. First Turkish Edition. Rare. Not in OCLC. According to the foreword, this translation were made by its French Edition. First Edition in English, 1936. Bienstock was trained as a lawyer. He was a Bolshevik during 1904-07 and then adhered to the Mensheviks, becoming one of the 'liquidators' in that faction. During the First World War, he and other Russian socialists, including his wife Judith Grinfeld and fellow Menshevik David Dallin, worked in the Institute for the Study of the Social Consequences of the War in Copenhagen that was run by Alexander Helfand (Parvus). He returned to Russia in 1917, and worked with the future Bolshevik economist Yuri Larin. He left the Soviet republic in 1918, but returned to live in Odessa in 1921-22, and was then arrested and deported from Soviet territory. He was a contributor to the Mensheviks' paper, the Sotsialistichesky Vestnik under the name G Osipov. Bienstock settled in Germany, and became active in the German Social Democratic Party in Berlin. Somewhat oddly, whilst he stood on the right wing of the Mensheviks, he adhered to the left wing of the SPD, joined the Zukunft grouping, and at one point sought a personal meeting with Trotsky. He also held a keen interest in mysticism and eastern religion, as can be seen in at least one of the six essays reproduced below. Bienstock wrote several books and pamphlets, including Deutschland und die Weltwirtschaft (Dietz, Berlin, 1931), Volk und Sozialdemokratie. Die innen- und aussenpolitischen Erfolge der Sozialdemokratischen Partei Deutschlands (Dietz, Berlin, 1932), Deutschland und Frankreich. Eine Europäische Auseinandersetzung (Werk und Wirtschaft, Berlin, 1932), Kampf um die Macht. Zur neuen Politik der Sozialdemocratie (Laubsche, Berlin, 1932), Zwischen den Weltkriegen (Zentralstelle fur das Bildungswesen, Prague, 1934, Europa und die Weltpolitik Die Zonen der Kriegsgefahr (Graphia, Karlsbad, 1936), The Struggle For The Pacific (Allen and Unwin, London, 1937 [.]. Turkish translator, Hamza Gürgüç was a Turkish soldier. After graduating from the Military Academy in 1933, he served in different positions with different ranks in the Turkish Armed Forces. He participated in the Dersim Operation in 1937. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1961 and to Major General in 1965. (Source: Maxists Official Website).‎

‎The Istanbul letters of Antun Vrancic: Croatian and English translation of selected Latin letters.= Carigradska pisma Antuna Vrancica: Hrvatski i Engleski prijevod odabranih Latinskih pisama. Prep. by Oguz Aydemir.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Folio. (31 x 25 cm). In English and Croatian. 171 p., color and b/w ills. The Istanbul letters of Antun Vrancic: Croatian and English translation of selected latin letters.= Carigradska pisma Antuna Vrancica: Hrvatski i Engleski prijevod odabranih Latinskih pisama. Prep. by Oguz Aydemir. Antun Vrancic or Antonio Veranzio, was a Croatian prelate, writer, diplomat and Archbishop of Esztergom in the 16th century. Antun Vrancic was from Dalmatian town of Sibenik (modern Croatia), then part of the Republic of Venice. Vrancic is also known under his Latinized name Antonius Verantius, while Hungarian documents since the 19th century refer to him as Verancsics Antal. In 1549, Vrancic entered Ferdinand's service. In parallel to his diplomatic duties, he held important positions in Catholic Church (the chief dean of Szabolcs County, abbot of Pornó Abbey). In 1553 he was appointed as a bishop of Pécs and sent to Constantinople to conduct negotiations with sultan Suleyman I on Ferdinand's behalf. That mission was previously declined by many other diplomats as an earlier negotiator was imprisoned by the Ottomans. Vrancic spent four years in Asia minor and finally concluded a peace treaty. After his return he was appointed bishop of Eger (17 July 1560 - 25 September 1570). After the Battle of Szigetvár in 1566, as one of Maximilian's ambassadors, Antun was sent to Turkey to negotiate peace again; he arrived in Constantinople on 26 August 1567. After five months of negotiations with Sokollu Mehmed Pasha and Selim II, agreement was reached by 17 February, and the Treaty of Adrianople was signed on 21 February 1568, ending the war between the Holy Roman Empire and Ottoman Empire. In appreciation of his diplomatic work, the king named him archbishop of Esztergom (17 October 1569 - 15 June 1573). During his stay in Istanbul, together with Ogier Ghislain de Busbecq, Vrancic discovered Res Gestae Divi Augusti (Eng. The Deeds of the Divine Augustus), a Roman monument in Ankara. His travels throughout the Transylvania, Balkan and Asia minor resulted in his writing extensive travel accounts. By writing letters to the Habsburg Kingdom almost every day, the diplomat telling the daily life of Istanbul gave examples of his culture and art works. Letters written 450 years ago provide important information about the diplomatic tradition of the 16th century and the behavior of the two emperors.‎

‎DUKAGJIN-ZADEH BASRI-BEY [DUKAKINZÂDE BASRI].‎

‎L'Albanie independante et l'empire khalifal Ottoman. Preface de Claude Farrere, (1876-1957).‎

‎Very Good French Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In French. [8], [1 frontispiece with a portrait], [xvi], 81, [2] p. Chipped on extremities of wrappers. Spine repaired by restoration tape. Overall a good copy. The Dukagjini were an Albanian feudal noble family. They may have been relatives or descendants of the earlier Progoni, who founded the first Albanian state in recorded history, the Principality of Arbanon. Their domain extended from northern Albania to western Kosovo. The city of Lezhe was its most important holding. The Dukagjini evolved from an extended clan (farefisni) to a feudal family in the late 13th century, when their first known progenitor Gjin Tanushi who became known as a dux (duke) and thus his descendants took the surname Dukagjini. By the early 15th century, they had evolved in one of the most important feudal families in the country. After the Ottoman conquest of Albania, a branch of them found refuge and settled in Venetian Koper, where they became known as the Docaini family which held the governorship of the town until the early 17th century, when the last male line Docaini died. Another branch, converted to Islam from Catholic Christianity and remained in the Ottoman Empire, where they reached the high ranks of Ottoman leadership and produced many governors (pashas) in the Middle East, where descendants of them live in the modern period. Basri Bey, together with names such as Enver Bey and Kazim Karabekir, he was among the founders of the Manastir organization of the Union and Progress Society, which played an important role in the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy. Basri Bey went to the opposition ranks with the claim that the Unionists, whom he thought was under the influence of a small clique, were moving away from the reforms and ideals, and expressed heavy criticism against them. Albania and the Ottoman Empire are important in terms of witnessing firsthand the approach of the Unionists on the eve of the Balkan War and Albanian independence, as well as the world of feelings and thoughts of the people of the region and especially the rebel Albanians. In this book, Basri Bey explained his thoughts on the nature of the Albanian revolt and the motives of the rebels against the Ottoman Empire.‎

‎MIRZA REZA KHAN DANISH ARFAUDDAWLA, (1846-1937).‎

‎[SECRET TREATIES / ANGLO-PERSIAN AGREEMENT OF 1919] Manzûme-yi Sulh ve re'y-i Dânîsh [ve tercümesi]. [i.e. Peace agreement and views of Mirzâ Dânîsh]. Translated into Ottoman Turkish by Ferid [Kam].‎

‎Very Good Persian First Edition of this extremely rare bilingual tractate including Prince Reza Khan's thoughts on Anglo-Persian agreement in1919. Mirza Reza Khan also known as Prince Rezâ Arfa', was a diplomat and poet of the late Qajar period who serviced in Constantinople. During his years of service abroad Reza became acquainted with a number of European political leaders. He was reported to entertain Russian sympathies and was certainly instrumental in negotiating the first Russian government loan to Persia, in 1317 / 1900. Nevertheless, he also appears to have supported the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919. In 1332 / 1914 he served as minister of justice (wazîr-e 'adlîya) in Tehran for about a year. This agreement in 1919 was a provisional agreement made between the British and the Persian governments which, if ratified, would have granted the British a paramount position of control over the financial and military affairs of Iran. From the days when Napoleon conceived the idea of invading India with the help of Alexander I, the Tsar of Russia, Great Britain contemplated with apprehension the invasion of India by Russia via Persia and Afghanistan. Under the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 (q.v.), which divided Persia into rival spheres of influence, southern Persia was assigned to Britain while Russia controlled the northern portion. Later, according to the terms of "The Secret Treaties of Constantinople" of 18 March 1915, Constantinople was promised to Russia, and England was allowed to incorporate within her sphere of influence the neutral zone of Persia. ‎[AUSTRIAN MILITARY BOOK ON THE RUSSO-TURKISH WAR OF 1768-1774] Der russisch - türkische Krieg, 1768-1774. With 7 sketched lithographic maps. [i.e. The Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774].‎

‎Fine German Contemporary half brown cloth with gilt spine title and marbled boards, bookbinder's label on front pastedown (Hans Ehrenfeldner, Mödling). Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In German. [vi], 268 p., seven folded sheets (23,5:19,5 cm) with sketched maps, pocketed in a rear strap depicting military operations in detail. Lithography on glossy paper (maps) and letterpress on strong machine paper. Cover in parts very slightly worn, otherwise a fine copy. First and only edition of this important and comprehensive historical account by Richard Ungermann, a teacher at the Vienna Imperial and the Royal Technical Military Academy, focuses on strategic, tactical, and technical questions in order to explain the unexpected success of the Russian Army, who was strongly outnumbered by the Ottoman Empire. and particularly rare study on the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774 from the perspective of Austrian military science, complete with all 7 sketched maps of military operations. Until today Ungermann's study is widely accepted as the "most comprehensive introduction to the war" (Scott). The Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774 was a major armed conflict that saw Russian arms largely victorious against the Ottoman Empire. Russia's victory brought part of Moldavia, the Yedisan between the rivers Bug and Dnieper, and Crimea into the Russian sphere of influence. Though a series of victories accrued by the Russian Empire led to substantial territorial conquests, including direct conquest over much of the Pontic-Caspian steppe, less Ottoman territory was directly annexed than might otherwise be expected due to a complex struggle within the European diplomatic system to maintain a balance of power that was acceptable to other European states and avoided direct Russian hegemony over Eastern Europe. (Wikipedia). Though well represented in institutional holdings this book is particularly hard to find in trade, as of June 2022 JAP/APO and RBH show no auction results at all for the last decades.
