br. Chi di noi non ha mai sentito parlare di Dracula e dei vampiri? Questi nomi sono talmente popolari da diventare patrimonio culturale comune. Da trecento anni, infatti, almeno una volta al secolo il mondo è completamente preda di una moda vampirica: nella prima metà del Settecento fu il tempo della cosiddetta "peste vampirica", verso la fine dell'Ottocento e gli inizi del Novecento il romanzo Dracula di Bram Stoker ne risvegliò l'interesse. I libri già scritti al riguardo seguono pressappoco uno stesso copione con ben poche varianti. Nonostante se ne faccia inizialmente accenno, il senso di questo libro, come già ampiamente sondato da altri autori, non è quello di soffermarsi sul celebre romanzo di Stoker e neppure di addentrarsi nella filmografia dell'horror. Si cercherà invece di comprendere l'origine della storia tra le pieghe degli antichi miti, soprattutto quelli che provengono dalla Romania e dai Balcani perché è da lì che si è consolidata l'immagine del vampiro che tutti noi abbiamo in mente. Per entrare meglio nell'argomento abbiamo iniziato la ricerca con la lettura di vecchi testi romeni di etnografia e mitologia, per poi recarci direttamente in Transilvania tra i villaggi e le persone alla ricerca di indizi sulle tracce di Dracula. È dunque tutto un viaggio all'indietro per capire da dove sia nato l'aspetto e le caratteristiche del vampiro che ci è noto, sia di conoscerlo nel luogo da cui origina.

Bladon" 1766 with a cancel title page and an additional dedication to David Garrick.<br /><br />John Northall 1723-1759 army officer and travel writer "entered the service as a gentleman cadet in the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 1 July 1741 and was promoted to lieutenant fireworker on 1 April 1742. He served under Thomas Pattison with the Royal Artillery in Flanders in 1742 and was promoted second lieutenant on 1 April 1744. He was at the battle of Fontenoy on 11 May 1745 and became first lieutenant on 3 October 1745 captain-lieutenant on 24 March 1752 and captain on 1 October 1755. In February 1752 he went to Minorca and thence to Livorno. He was recorded in Capua on 1 April 1752. Instead of making the usual tour of Italy he visited the principal cities of Tuscany and after a cursory visit to Rome went to Naples. Then after a more lengthened stay in Rome he went to Loreto Bologna Venice Mantua Parma Modena and returned to Livorno whence he sailed for Genoa. From Genoa he went by sea to Villafranca and on by land to Marseilles. He died in 1759. An account of his Italian tour was published posthumously in July 1766 Travels through Italy; Containing New and Curious Observations on that Country but the work has been criticized as following closely J. G. Keysler's Travels 1740; Eng. trans. 1756." Small volume approx. 14cm by 9cm consisting of simple title-page followed by 35 pages each with two black and white engraved portraits of French Kings from Pharamond to Napoleon III with names and dates. At rear is a 12 page catalogue for Dean & Son. The title-page does not give publisher date or author. The dethronement date of 1870 for Napoleon III is not stated and so almost certain that this was published prior to 1871 the books advertised in the catalogue suggest a date of about 1860. Covers are dark blue with ornate dulled gilt lettering and decoration on the front and bind decoration on the back the spine is plain. There is a crease on the front cover which shows on the inside cover with a crack in the paste-down. The binding is sound although the paper has split over the rear inner hinge and partially over the front. Pale yellow end-papers are lightly marked pages are clean. Assumed first edition. 36 12.
