1810 Island of Elba - French Law and Statistic

8vo. 8 pages. Text is in German. A scarce primary resource. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a German translation of an official French document concerning laws imposed by the King of France during his reign over Elba island, when it was divided into only 7 municipalities. With brief notes on the structure of the criminal court or tribunal, and featuring a poulation chart which includes Portoferraio, Marciana, Rio, and Porto-Longone Capoliveri. In 1802 the island had become a French possession, and its economy flourished. Following the Treaty of Fontainebleau, French emperor Napoleon I was exiled to Elba after his forced abdication in 1814 and arrived at Portoferraio on May 3, 1814 to begin his exile there. He was allowed to keep a personal guard of six hundred men. Although he was nominally sovereign of Elba, the island was watched (more or less) by British naval patrols.

19th Century Student of Medicine
Journal of Manuscript Medical Notes in German, titled: "Materia Medica und Formulare nach Dr. Büchner" , [Medical Material and Formulas According to Dr. Büchner].
Manuscript notes made by a nineteenth century student of medicine, possibly intent on becoming an apothecary, who examines and records the earlier works of German physician and professor Andreas Elias Buechner (1701-1769), including numerous medicinal recipes and commentary on physiological effects. 8vo. 56 pages in manuscript. Text is in German. Marbled paper boards with blank label to front. Volume measures approximately 17 x 21 cm. Very slight wear to boards, otherwise in very good condition, internally crisp and bright. The 18th century was the 'Golden Age' of scientific academies and learned societies. This work provides valuable information on the historic application of natural ingredients with medicinal qualities, as well as a somewhat early history of the experimentation and progress in the field of medicine, by drawing from the methodology and recipes of a notable eighteenth century German physician and educator in the field - Andreas Elias Büchner. Following a five-point outline, the writer compiles a lengthy and well organized list of medical ailments or discomforts and the simple remedies for them, over 24 pages, a very small sampling of these being parageusia (a distortion of the sense of taste), digestive issues for which are listed various laxatives, skin sensitivities and emollients, "alterantia" or hormonal alterants, and diaphoretics. A section headed "Special Formulas," comprising 23 pages of more complex medicinal recipes, provides ingredients and measurements for various emulsions, syrups, pills and much more. Andreas Elias Büchner (1701-1769) was a German physician, naturalist, Professor of Medicine at some of Germany's leading institutions, president of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from 1735 to 1769, and one of Friedrich Hoffmann's most zealous followers. 1929 - 1935 Two Photograph Albums With Boys and Young Men's Education & Activities in Austria & Germany
European Origin: No Publisher Noted 1929. Containing approximately 90 black and white photographic images of varying sizes; from 1 1/4" square to 3 ½" x 5 ½" postcard size; most of them average about 2 ½" x 3 ½." Mostly these are candid photographs of the life of young boys and men in Austria and Germany with internal dating on some of the photographs of 1929 to 1935 and additional place and dating information on some. There are photos of children mostly young boys at class and later as young men on class trips hiking cycling; with adult chaperones; for the older boys the educational duties appear to be supervised by Christian religious male instructors only. Also containing a few group photographs of men students priests; and some church interior views. Some of the images have the photography studio rubber stamps on the reverse of the state pharmacy in Rottweil. Five of the images are commercial images of architectural landmarks in Vienna. The photographs are corner-mounted not glued into two hardcover albums with black paper pages side-string tied. One album measures 6" x 8 ¼" and the other 7 ½" x 10 ½" approx. size; both albums with art-deco themed cloth covers. Sm. 4to., on laid paper; original printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued, upper wrapper with divisional crest in yellow and black, lower wrapper with small unobtrusive stain in one corner, a remarkably clean, bright copy. A key component of Second Army, the famous West Country Division captured Mount Picon, forced the crossing of the Seine, were the first British troops to fight in Germany, and turned the tide in the Reichswald enabling the Allies to close with the Rhine. As part of Horrocks' 30 Corps, the division also took part in the headlong rush to Nijmegen in GARDEN. Locally printed, probably on a commissioned press, this humble pamphlet is nevertheless a moving tribute to one of the most famous British fighting units of WWII. A RARE SURVIVAL AND CONSIDERABLY MORE ELUSIVE THAN ITS SECOND ARMY COUNTERPART.

The condition is a bit rough with corners bent and curling some pencil marks to the front cover and a note one page indicating the previous owner's relation to one of the airmen. Soil and a pencilled notation to the tan rear cover. This book seems to have been written and produced by the members of Squadron 97X during the time of their stay on PEI for training. Flight Lieutenant E.F. Dobie and Flying Officer W.J. Birrell are listed as "Men Responsible" so they may have taken and editing hand to this pamphlet. Full page bio and pictures of 21 airmen along with a cartoon soccer match photo and description of a concert. Represented squadron members are Dobie Birrell Adams Allan Chapman Donelly Finnis Gowers Habgood Higgins Lee Lovell McCracken Owen Paris Reinstadtler Richardson Smart Spencer Stevenson Turner Williams and Woolley. A classic dance-era publication composed by James Reese Europe 1881–1919 in collaboration with Ford T. Dabney 1883–1958 written for the celebrated ballroom team of Vernon and Irene Castle at the height of America’s tango craze. Europe already emerging as one of the most important Black bandleaders of the early twentieth century served as musical director for the Castles and helped translate Afro-American rhythmic idioms into the social dance repertoire of white high society. The Castles were famous not just for their stylish athleticism but also for their boldness: as a white dance troupe they had hired an African American orchestra as accompaniment and an African American musical director at a time when integration was exceptionally uncommon. The publication predates Europe’s celebrated wartime leadership of the 369th Infantry “Hellfighters†Band and represents his pre-war commercial output in New York’s Tin Pan Alley orbit.<br /> <br /> Overall an interesting piece from the Pre-Harlem Hellfighters period of Europe’s career. The cover features a photographic image of the Castles in mid-step against a vivid purple field. Europe was already emerging as one of the most important African American bandleaders of the period through his work directing the Castle House Orchestra which accompanied the Castles’ dance demonstrations and performances in New York. As noted in Library of Congress program materials on the Castles:<br /> <br /> “In 1914 the most famous exponents of modern social dance were Vernon and Irene Castle. Their revolutionary style did away with bulky moves associated with dances of the late nineteenth century and replaced them with elegant and streamlined athleticism. Paris: Imp. Kossuth for the Ligue française pour la protection du cheval. First Edition. Very good. Undated ca. 1920. Broadside 11.75" c 15.5" printed in red and black on newsprint. Lightly toned old folding creases a few small stains at corners rectangular area at upper left lighter than the rest where a small printed note now detached but present was affixed. Very good. At the top of the broadside is a ca. 6.5" x 10.5" illustration by Madeleine Whitechurch of a horse being gored by a bull as another bleeding horse looks on. At the bottom right of the illustration is the caption "Voila comment nous recompensons le le plus precieux auxiliaire de la victoire" "Here is how we reward our most precious ally in victory" - a reference to the role of the horse on the battlefield of the First World War. The remainder of the page is taken up with dense text under the bold heading "Les Courses de Taureax son un danger social" Bullfighting is a social danger. The text denounces bullfighting as a cruel and barbaric sport espcially horrific to those who have witnessed the atrocities of war or gone into battle with loyal equine companions and calls upon politicians and journalist to condemn the sport. The additional printed appeals to French nationalism noting that the French are now more cruel than the Germans "who have strictly prohibited this degrading spectacle" and asks paraphrasing "Will we allow the whole world to call them more civilized than we are No! A thousand times no!" The Ligue française pour la protection du cheval still exists and is France's oldest organization for the protection of horses established in 1850. Rare. Haarlem 1730. Small 8vo 16 x 10 cm. Bernardus Cleynhens Half textured red cloth ca. 1860 sewn on 2 tapes chemical-marbled sides in brown and blue. With 25 double-page engraved maps 2 overview maps the second serving as a key to the 23 numbered detail maps and an engraved plate with 8 scales all hand-coloured partly in outline. The 2 overview maps slightly wider than the others have a flap folded in at each side. Further with 1 rococo woodcut tailpiece 1 woodcut decorated initial and a fleuron on the title-page. 40 23 1 blank pp. plus maps and plate of scales. A surprisingly rare pocket atlas illustrating the theatre of the "tegenwoordigen" present war probably meaning the War of the Austrian Succession 1740-1748 but possibly the Seven Years' War 1756-1763. The title-page notes that it is suited for officers travellers and lovers of geography to carry in a pocket. The text in Dutch gives a geographic description only of "Duytsland" Germany including Austria Bohemia and a few other areas whereas the maps also cover the Low Countries the English Channel northwest France and to the east as far as Warsaw Krakow and Belgrade. The 23 detail maps were designed so that they could be assembled with the key map to make a single wall map whose cartographic image would measure 53 x 90 cm.With a contemporary owner's bookplate embossed stamp and library labels. With the text leaves somewhat browned not affecting the maps or the plate with scales and the first 2 leaves slightly worn but generally in good condition. Very good. Group of 11 original photographs of the aftermath of the 1941 German air raids on Northern Ireland known as the Belfast Blitz. The photos all measure 4.25 x 6 inches and all have Belfast Telegraph stamps on the back Images in very good condition versos have black paper residue on them. The Belfast Blitz was a series of devastating German bombing raids on Belfast that took place in April and May of 1941. "Luftwaffe bombers honed in on strategically selected targets of industrial and military importance across the city. Over the course of 4 nights bombers attacked many of these targets but it was working-class residents in the city who paid the highest price. In particular neighborhoods in North Belfast and East Belfast suffered. Tightly-packed poorly-built housing was no match for the high explosive bombs parachute mines and incendiary bombs of the German Luftwaffe. Between 7th April 1941 and 6th May 1941 an estimated 900-1000 people died as a result of enemy action in Belfast and parts of Co. Down and Co. Londonderry" Belfastblitz website. unknown

While in London in 1705 Robert Beverley wrote and published The History and Present State of Virginia one of the earliest printed English-language histories about North America by an author born there. As a native-born American—most famously claiming "I am an Indian"—he provided English readers with the first thoroughgoing account of the province's past natural history Indians and current politics and society. Sabin calls Beverley the "best authority" affording the "most vivid comprehensive instructive and entertaining picture of Virginia at the date of his writing." N. B. Nel bordo inferiore delle pagine dalla 63 alla 68, lontano dal testo, piccola macchia d'inchiostro di forma semicircolare. Per il resto buon esemplare in barbe. La prima edizione di quest'opera fu pubblicata nel 1828 a Bruxelles con il titolo Des destinées futures de l'Europe. Par l'auteur de la Revue Politique de l'Europe en 1825. Lo scritto analizza la situazione politico-istituzionale dell'Europa del tempo, riservando particolare attenzione alle condizioni dell'istituto monarchico e condannando i continui tentativi della Chiesa di Roma di influenzare i regnanti e di interferire nelle loro decisioni.
