Large Limited Edition mezzotint engraved portrait of Carolus Linnaeus, eighteenth century botanist, discover and physician, together with a single leaf biographical sketch, 1926-1929. Painted and engraved by T. Hamilton Crawford from a painting made in 1775 by Alexander Roslin and held in London's National Portrait Gallery. Very Good and original condition, protected with a tissue guard, clean and bright with strong impression, suitable for framing. A Rare and Large Portrait - Medium Quarto. Engraving measures approximately 9 x 11.5 inches. Matte measures approximately 18.5 x 23 inches. From a limited edition work (only 400 copies) issued by the museum from 1926-1929, titled "The Museum Galleries, London" and being a collection of coloured mezzotint artist signed portraits of famous men and women. Alexander Roslin (1718-1793) was a Swedish portrait painter who worked in Scania, Bayreuth, Paris, Italy, and St. Petersburg, primarily for members of aristocratic families. He combined insightful psychological portrayal with a skillful representation of fabrics and jewels. His painting of Jeanne Sophie de Vignerot du Plessis, Countess of Egmont Pignatelli, fetched US$3 million in 2006. Thomas Hamilton Crawford (1860-1933) was a respected British painter and illustrator known for his architectural, urban settings, mezzotint portrait engravings, and watercolours.

A picture of this book is ava Cox i, 188: "An important and interesting work on Lapland and parts of Norway and Sweden. This famous botanist was himself the instigator of a large number of scientific voyages." Catalogue of the Works of Linnaeus in British Museum (1933) #188. Soulsby 192. Hulth 160. Sansbergs Bokhandel, catalogue 12, p. 117: "Linnaeus started his work of investigation during his early manhood with his journeys to the Swedish provinces, where he noted the natural resources of the country-side. In the summer of 1741 he visited Oland and Gotland, in 1746 Vastergotland and Bohuslan and Skane in 1749. His accounts of these trips are his most often read works. They are of great topographical interest and abound in his observations of nature, animal and plant life as well as in ethnographical and economical matters. His geological remarks are of particular interest. The style is Linnaeus's usual: short, direct and to the point, often shot through with humour and touched with a lyrical love for nature." Smith bought Linnaeus's manuscripts and brought them back to England. The first Swedish edition was not until 1888.

Plus 50 plates printed in various techniques some in colour each preceded by a leaf of captions and explanations with interleaving tissue guards. With 34 text illustrations. Pictorial title-page printed in colour. HARDCOVER bound in the original illustrated cloth gilt. In fine internal condition. Overall an excellent copy with all plates in exceptionally fine state of preservation. ~ Major General F. J. van Lier's copy with his entry and signature to front flyleaf. Noteworthy is the technique in which the fine plates in this book are produced. The monochromatic plates are printed in collotype one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms. The colour plates are not chromolithographs as it is sometimes erratically assumed. At the end of the 19th century the term "chromotypograph" implying colour printed from raised metal as type is was used for colour prints which made use of metal relief blocks. It is indeed the process used in this book; the colour plates were printed from etched metal blocks a relief method rather than planographic. La carta appartiene alla monumentale opera di Pompeo Litta "Famiglie Celebri Italiane" uscita in fascicoli tra il 1819 e il 1900. Le Tavole Genealogiche della Real Casa di Savoia illustrate coi monumenti da Pompeo Litta, è la parte dedicata ai Savoia composta tra il 1839 e il 1845 e risulta sicuramente la più pregiata in quanto straordinariamente ricca di tavole, di grande qualità per la loro coloritura. La parte più significativa del volume sui Savoia sono le 29 carte geografiche raffiguranti i territori dei ducati sabaudi, notevolmente impreziosite dalla presenza dei rispettivi stemmi, magnificamente colorati e rialzati in argento ed oro; le prime due carte forniscono una visione globale degli stati sabaudi; le successive, invece, tratteggiano i confini di ciascun ducato o contea, delineandoli con differenti colori. Incisione al tratto, finemente colorata a mano in epoca, in eccellente stato di conservazione. The map belongs to the monumental work of Pompeo Litta "Famigli Celebri Italiane", issued in different instalments between 1819 and 1900. Le Tavole Genealogiche della Real Casa di Savoia illustrate coi monumenti da Pompeo Litta, è la parte dedicata ai Savoia composta tra il 1839 e il 1845 e risulta sicuramente la più pregiata in quanto straordinariamente ricca di tavole, di grande qualità per la loro coloritura.
