‎Summary In the region that was to become Moldavia and Wallachia, there are almost no traces of the use of writing for the millennium after the Roman Empire withdrew from Dacia. Written culture surfaces only by the second half of the fourteenth century, after the foundation of state institutions. This book surveys the earliest extant documents, their issuers, and the motives that triggered the development of documentary culture in Moldavia and Wallachia. By the fifteenth century, Moldavians were already accustomed to the use of charters. In Wallachia, noblemen also appealed to written records, but at that stage mainly in extraordinary circumstances. Women could not inherit land, and noblemen requested princely charters confirming a legal fiction that turned their daughters into sons. After the mid-sixteenth century, Wallachia experiences a steep growth in the number of charters issued. In this period of economic and social upheaval, charters proved an extraordinary means for the protection of landed property. Yet neither principality held secular archives - the storage of documents for later use in private hands suggests an early stage in the development of documentary culture. By covering the 'birth' and spread of pragmatic literacy in medieval Moldavia and Wallachia, this book thus fills an important lacuna in what is known about the development of literacy in the later Middle Ages. ‎Very Good English Original theater program signed 'Marcel Marceau' to a person named Julien. Demy 8vo. (22 x 15 cm). In English. [30] p., fully advertisements. Marceau's program: "Week of Sunday, May 4, 1958. Matinee Saturday, May 10. Ronald A. Wilford Associates presents Marcel Marceau and hiss partners Gilles Segal and Pierre Verry. The program will consist of pantomimes selected from the following repertoire[.]". Notes on the last pages. Marceau was a French actor and mime artist most famous for his stage persona as "Bip the Clown". He referred to mime as the "art of silence" and he performed professionally worldwide for over 60 years. As a youth, he lived in hiding and worked with the French Resistance during most of World War II, giving his first major performance to 3,000 troops after the liberation of Paris in August 1944. Following the war, he studied dramatic art and mime in Paris.‎

Le carte, copiate da quelle incise da Philipp Galle per l'Epitome di Ortelius (Anversa 1583), sono incise da un anonimo artista e inserite in una pagina di testo in italiano. Nota anche una ristampa delle stesse, pubblicata da Alessandro Vecchi a Venezia nel 1618 e ancora nel "Theatro del mondo" di Giovanni M. Turrini, (1655), e Scipion Banca (1657). Incisione in rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Rara. Miniature map, first published by Pietro Maria Marchetti in "Theatro del mondo" (Brescia 1598), this example is taken from "Relationi universali di Giovanni Botero", Brescia 1599. The second epitome of Abraham Ortelius’ folio !eatrum was produced in Italy by Pietro Maria Marchetti and the 109 new maps, by an unknown engraver, are accompanied by Italian text. The plates are close imitations of those of Philip Galle (see 1577 & 1583), likely the 1593 edition with Italian text.These maps were also used by the same publisher to illustrate an edition of Giovanni Botero’s Le Relationi universali, probably issued in 1599 as its preface was dated 15 December 1598. Another edition published by Alessandro Vecchi, Venice, 1618, included a reissue of the 1599 sheets.Theey were published again in 1655 (there were two issues with different title-pages and dedications dated 15 July & 20 September) and also 1667 in the "Theatro del mondo" by Giovanni Turrini e Scipion Banca. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, in very good conditions. Rare.‎
