Sir Richard Croft, Medical Baronet
Medical Manuscript Letter by a British Physician to King George III and the Royal Family, Describeing Complications of a Pregnancy Four Years Before the "Triple Obstetrical Tragedy.
Manuscript letter by Sir Richard Croft, Physician to King George III and the Royal Family, accoucheur (obstetrician), and British peer, describes complications of a pregnancy four years before the "triple obstetrical tragedy" Princess Charlotte which has become his unfortunate infamy. 8vo. 2 pages in manuscript. Double leaf measuring approximately 12 x 18,5 cm, watermarked with the year 1811, with integral address, two postal ink stamps and a lovely red wax seal. Very faint age-toning only to sections of the leaf exposed for mailing, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved and highly relevant to the writer's occupation as a manmidwife and the complications of pregnancy and birthing in the early nineteenth century. "Sir Richard Croft (1762-1818) physician and man-midwife gained notoriety after his involvement in the labor of Princess Charlotte, which resulted in her death. He never shook off the shame of the tragedy, and shot himself three months later." (Oxford DNB). Manuscript signed letter from the Royal Physician and Male Midwife to the late Princess Charlotte, Sir Richard Croft, who is remembered for causing the "Triple Obstetrical Tragedy" of 1817, in which is a primary source account of early nineteenth century complications and precepts surrounding pregnancy and child deliveries. The writer is Sir Richard Croft, 6th Baronet (9 January 1762 - 13 February 1818), English physician to the British Royal Family and the obstetrician to Princess Charlotte, who is famed for his role in "the triple obstetrical tragedy" of her death in 1817. He received his medical training from, among others, his father-in-law, Dr. Thomas Denman, a preeminent obstetrician in London whose textbook on childbirth had been first published in 1788. He graduated with his MD from the University of Oxford in 1789. Croft was appointed the personal physician of King George III. He was also a member of the Medical and Chirurgical Society of London, and Physician to the Lying-in Charity on Old Burlington Street. He was the primary accoucheur or midwife to Princess Charlotte, granddaughter of the reigning King George III. Manuscript

VINLAND MAP AND THE TARTAR RELATION
Book has slight soiling to textblock. Dustjacket is price-clipped. DJ has small tears to corner and chipping to spine ends. Light soiling to DJ. ; Evidence concerning the Viking discovery of North America in the tenth and eleventh centuries is so incomplete, investigation of this area of history will be substantially aided by the discovery of new documents. Such is the claim made for the previously unknown manuscripts here published for the first time. They are two documents copied about 1440 from much earlier originals, now lost. The first is an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols in 1245-47. The second is a world map, including the western ocean, with delineations of Iceland, Greenland, and a land mass named Vinland which represents the North American mainland as known to the medieval Norsemen. This map is the earliest known and indisputable cartographic representation of any part of the Americas. As the editors show, the Tartar Relation provides information on Mongol history and legend not to be found in any known source, and a portion of the Map represents the only surviving medieval example based on Norse cartography - a conclusion with far-reaching implications for the history of cartography and of the Viking navigations. SKRINE, C. P.
The Alps of Qungar - 11
Title: The Alps of Qungur. Author: SKRINE, C. P. Publisher: London: Royal Geographical Society, 1925. Pre-Dates Book. Item is in ORIGINAL Condition, With Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!!! Notes & Condition: Skrine's narrative describes his attempts to conduct a survey of the unexplored eastern face of the Qungur massif and particularly its offshoot in the Shiwakte Mountains, in the Qaratash valley - at the suggestion of Sir Aurel Stein, first to cross the Buramsal Pass and follow the Qaratash river to its debouchure 36 miles due south of Kashgar. Initially following Stein's route, Skrine proceeded, in 1922, from Strinigar to Kashgar through Gilgit, Hunza, Mintaka Pass and Takqurghan on a journey of two and a quarter years. He then explored the Qungur peaks, and made tours to Yarkand, Khotan and Keriya. Provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the indigenous Qirghiz; the glaciology of the region and reconnaissance notes on the Torbashi, Ghorumde and Kaying glaciers; botany of the meadows at Kaying Bashi and a survey of the Shiwakte group of mountains. Skrine considered his surveying to be little more than an amateur attempt but Major Kenneth Mason, cartographer working for the Survey of Indian authorities, compiled the topographical material into a map of the Qungur Massif area, details of the outcome outlined here. In addition, notes on plants collected. Accompanied by a spectacular, large, fold-out colour map and equally captivating panoramic photography. Pre-dates the author's book, "Chinese Central Asia", first published in 1926; 27 pages. Plus black and white plates, one of which is a fold-out panorama, and fodl-out color map, measuring 12 inches x 14 inches. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition.
