Without the birth of this great commonwealth, the various historical phenomena of the sixteenth and following centuries must have either not existed, or have presented themselves under essential modifications. Itself an organized protest against ecclesiastical tyranny and universal empire, the Republic guarded with sagacity, at many critical periods in the world's history, that balance of power which, among civilized states, ought always to be identical with the scales of divine justice. The splendid empire of Charles the Fifth was erected upon the grave of liberty. It is a consolation to those who have hope in humanity to watch, under the reign of his successor, the gradual but triumphant resurrection of the spirit over which the sepulchre had so long been sealed. (wiki) // THE indulgence with which the History of the Rise of the Dutch Republic was received has encouraged me to prosecute my task with renewed industry. A single word seems necessary to explain the somewhat increased proportions which the present work has assumed over the original design. The intimate connection which was formed between the Kingdom of England and the Republic of Holland, immediately after the death of William the Silent, rendered the history and the fate of the two commonwealths for a season almost identical. The years of anxiety and suspense during which the great Spanish project for subjugating England and reconquering the Netherlands, by the same invasion, was slowly matured, were of deepest import for the future destiny of those two countries and for the cause of national liberty. The deep-laid conspiracy of Spain and Rome against human rights deserves to be patiently examined, for it is one of the great lessons of history. The crisis was long and doubtful, and the health ---- perhaps the existence ---- of England and Holland, and, with them, of a great part of Christendom, was on the issue. History has few so fruitful examples of the dangers which come from superstition and despotism, and the blessings which flow from the maintenance of religious and political freedom, as those afforded by the struggle between England and Holland on the one side, and Spain and Rome on the other, during the epoch which I have attempted to describe. It is for this reason that I have thought it necessary to reveal, as minutely as possible, the secret details of this conspiracy of king and priest against the people, and to show how it was baffled at last by the strong self-helping energy of two free nations combined. The period occupied by these two volumes is therefore a short one, when counted by years, for it begins in 1584 and ends with the commencement of 1590. When estimated by the significance of events and their results for future ages, it will perhaps be deemed worthy of the close examination which it has received. With the year 1588 the crisis was past; England was safe, and the new Dutch commonwealth was thoroughly organized. It is my design, in two additional volumes, which, Avith the two now published, will complete the present work, to carry the history of the Republic down to the Synod of Dort. La carta è firmata da William Mount e Thomas II Page, rispettivamente figlio di Richard e Thomas I, primi esponenti della tipografia che stampò il The English Pilot fino all’inizio del XIX secolo.La carta appartiene alle cosiddette “blueback charts” che iniziarono ad apparire a Londra nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo; erano carte nautiche di grande o grandissimo formato, così denominate per il loro particolare supporto in carta blu. Il supporto - un foglio blu comunemente disponibile e usato tradizionalmente dagli editori per contenere opuscoli a stampa non rilegati - fu adottato come un modo pratico per rafforzare la carta di bassa qualità utilizzata dagli editori di carte nautiche nel tentativo di ridurre i costi. Le prime carte blueback conosciute sono quella pubblicate dalla tipografia Mount & Page intorno al 1750 e successivamente da Robert Sayer (1787). Le carte dell'Englis Pilot erano intese come carte per la navigazione, quindi ci fu uno sforzo per renderle accurate. L'opera include la grande carta nautica del Mar Mediterraneo, arricchita da cartigli contenenti piani nautici di Civitavecchia, Livorno, Nettuno e delle baie di Tunisi e Alessandretta. Initially published by John Seller, publication of the atlas changed hands periodically, with other publishers including Charles Price, John Thornton, and the Mount & Page firm. Part III covers the whole Mediterranean Sea, in 14 sections, with title page, descriptive text, and set of seventeen maps. Features a large folding map titled "A Correct Chart of the Mediterranean Sea from the Coast of Portugal to the Levant." and 16 other maps which are double-page folio sheets covering parts of the Mediterranean and are all embellished with compass roses, rhumb lines and costal profiles.The charts from the English Pilot were intended as working charts so there was an effort to make them accurate, although predictably, many seamen complained that the charts were consistently out of date and that changes were slow to appear, a charge levelled at virtually every British, French and American Chart maker, including the respective governments of these nations. Ironically, it was in no small part due to the proprietary nature of the information included in the maps and sailing directions that there was a tendency for commercial pilots to pass the information from mariner to chart-maker more slowly than might otherwise have been the case, although the chart makers on the Thames and otherwise were undoubtedly reluctant to immediately make each and every necessary correction, for fear of undermining the economic viability of their businesses.Bibliografia: cfr.
