‎Lot of Seven Monastic Manuscripts, with Watercolour Painted Illustration, Containing Eulogy, Hymns, and Poems.‎

‎Lot of seven monastic manuscripts, 1842-1844, hand coloured and illustrated by the writer, Otto Sandkamp, a German monk of the Catholic church, including a memorial to a notable Father Martin, verses to nature and specifically to the sun, and some hymns. 8vo. Seven manuscript documents on five leafs, two of which are signed by the author, four of which are dated. Text is in German. Leafs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 33 x 42 cm, and the largest measuring approximately 33 x 21 cm. Some age-toning and, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, clean and bright. One of the leafs is a eulogy-like dedication to Father Martin, possibly the respected Oblate who in 1838 was sent by the Bishop of Marseilles C.J. Eugene to Cotignac, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. Built in the 12th century, falling into disrepair, and being confiscated by the State during the French Revolution, the chapel was finally restored and put back into use in 1840 owing to a generous donation by a German family. Father Martin's "Mission of Cotignac" began in February 1842, only a few weeks after the present document of 18 January 1842, for his mission at the Chapelle Saint Martin. ‎Seconde partie seule (français-espagnol) datée 1624 du Tesoro de las dos lenguas Española y Francesa, quatrième édition et première bruxelloise établie sur l’édition parisienne de 1616 du dictionnaire bilingue de César Oudin publié une première fois en 1607.« À la fin du XVIe siècle, César Oudin (1560-1625, interprète pour Henri IV et l'un des premiers traducteurs de Don Quichotte en français) commença à publier en France des ouvrages destinés à l’enseignement de l’espagnol. Le premier d’entre eux fut, en 1597, une Grammaire et observation de la langue espagnolle qui connut vingt éditions successives, la dernière datant de 1686. (…) Dès 1605, un ensemble de proverbes espagnols réunis par notre auteur et accompagnés d’une traduction en français due à sa plume parut sous le titre Refranes o proverbios castellanos traduzidos en lengua francesa. Proverbes espagnols traduits en françois. Le succès fut encore au rendez-vous puisque l’ouvrage donna lieu à onze éditions parues entre 1605 et 1702. En 1607, César Oudin publia la première édition du Tesoro. Tous les spécialistes s’accordent à dire que ce dictionnaire, véritable best seller durant près de soixante-dix ans, constitue le chef-d’œuvre de la lexicographie franco-espagnole au XVIIe siècle. (…) Le Tesoro... fut sans cesse mis à jour et augmenté, par l’auteur d’abord et, après sa mort, par son propre fils, Antoine, puis par divers imprimeurs-libraires parisiens, bruxellois et lyonnais : ce dictionnaire connut en tout huit éditions, réalisées entre 1607 et 1675 à Paris, Bruxelles et Lyon » (Marc Zuili). La première ligne des titre et titre de départ «Seconde Partie de » a été gommée et remplacée à l’époque respectivement par une formule et une biffure manuscrites à l’encre du temps. Macneile Dixon" loose; one also has the emblem of John Lane Co. The Bodley Head New York City. William Macneile Dixon 1866-1946 was an English author and professor of English language and literature at the University of Glasgow from 1904 to 1935. The author Nicholas Charles Victor Oudinot duc de Reggio 1791-1863 was the son of Napoleon I's marshal Nicolas Oudinot. In 1814 at the end of the later Napoleonic campaigns he was promoted to major. He led the cavalry school at Saumur from 1822 to 1830 and was inspector general of cavalry from 1836 to 1848. Most significantly he commanded the eight to ten thousand French troops that besieged Rome in 1849 taking it back from the short-lived Roman Republic. Lacking map; otherwise in Very Good Condition: binding is rubbed with several scrapes in the paper over the boards; front joint just starting at head; clean and bright.
