VINLAND MAP AND THE TARTAR RELATION
Book has slight soiling to textblock. Dustjacket is price-clipped. DJ has small tears to corner and chipping to spine ends. Light soiling to DJ. ; Evidence concerning the Viking discovery of North America in the tenth and eleventh centuries is so incomplete, investigation of this area of history will be substantially aided by the discovery of new documents. Such is the claim made for the previously unknown manuscripts here published for the first time. They are two documents copied about 1440 from much earlier originals, now lost. The first is an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols in 1245-47. The second is a world map, including the western ocean, with delineations of Iceland, Greenland, and a land mass named Vinland which represents the North American mainland as known to the medieval Norsemen. This map is the earliest known and indisputable cartographic representation of any part of the Americas. As the editors show, the Tartar Relation provides information on Mongol history and legend not to be found in any known source, and a portion of the Map represents the only surviving medieval example based on Norse cartography - a conclusion with far-reaching implications for the history of cartography and of the Viking navigations. OVERSIZED. ; 291 pages

SKRINE, C. P.
The Alps of Qungar - 11
Title: The Alps of Qungur. Author: SKRINE, C. P. Publisher: London: Royal Geographical Society, 1925. Pre-Dates Book. Item is in ORIGINAL Condition, With Blue Wrappers - As Issued, Complete with All the Ads!!! Notes & Condition: Skrine's narrative describes his attempts to conduct a survey of the unexplored eastern face of the Qungur massif and particularly its offshoot in the Shiwakte Mountains, in the Qaratash valley - at the suggestion of Sir Aurel Stein, first to cross the Buramsal Pass and follow the Qaratash river to its debouchure 36 miles due south of Kashgar. Initially following Stein's route, Skrine proceeded, in 1922, from Strinigar to Kashgar through Gilgit, Hunza, Mintaka Pass and Takqurghan on a journey of two and a quarter years. He then explored the Qungur peaks, and made tours to Yarkand, Khotan and Keriya. Provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the indigenous Qirghiz; the glaciology of the region and reconnaissance notes on the Torbashi, Ghorumde and Kaying glaciers; botany of the meadows at Kaying Bashi and a survey of the Shiwakte group of mountains. Skrine considered his surveying to be little more than an amateur attempt but Major Kenneth Mason, cartographer working for the Survey of Indian authorities, compiled the topographical material into a map of the Qungur Massif area, details of the outcome outlined here. In addition, notes on plants collected. Accompanied by a spectacular, large, fold-out colour map and equally captivating panoramic photography. Pre-dates the author's book, "Chinese Central Asia", first published in 1926; 27 pages. Plus black and white plates, one of which is a fold-out panorama, and fodl-out color map, measuring 12 inches x 14 inches. Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition.

Skvorecky, Josef
The Republic of Whores : a Fragment from the Time of the Cults
Toronto: Knopf Canada 1993 Book. Illus. by Jan Brychta. As New. Hardcover. 1st Can Ed. Orignally published in Czech as " Tankovy Prapor"1971 by 68 Publishers.Translated by Paul Wilson Illustrations by Jan Brychta. "Skvorecky's raucous account of life on a Czech army base brings to mind Catch - 22 and proves that the black humor of enlisted men is nearly universal. Written in 1971 the novel whose title refers to the state to which the Czechs sank under Soviet occupation also has an anguished side. Set in the tumultuous 1950s it details the rebellion of recruits who refuse to attend political indoctrination meetings and are bent on sabotaging their military exercises. Danny Smiricky who has a Ph.D. in philosophy and who has served as the author's alter-ego in several novels including The Engineer of Human Souls proves a perfect foil for the microcosm of humanity that has washed up at the base. A tank commander Smiricky is nearly through with his military service and seems unfazed by the mayhem going on around him. Though Smiricky is no saint--he sleeps with an officer's wife and goes AWOL in order to see his girlfriend in Prague--his behavior seems mild compared to the rambunctious prank-playing of the other recruits. The author pokes fun at everyone--the suspicious often illiterate enlistees; Czech officers ludicrously bent on aping their Soviet superiors; the Soviet general who arrives to supervise military exercises and proceeds to get drunk--and this hilarious novel should appeal to a readership beyond the usual fans of Czech literature. ROMAN THEATER AND SOCIETY E. Togo Salmon Papers I
University of Michigan Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0472107216 . A couple of corners are lightly bumped. Former owner's bookplate to ffep name has been deleted. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing with chipping to one corner. ; Roman Theater & Society; 9.75 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 200 pages; William Slater's new volume Roman Theater and Society brings an important perspective to the much-maligned status of the Roman theater which has only recently been reappraised and appreciated as uniquely Roman rather than criticized for not being Greek. From this point of embarkation William Slater and the nine contributors discuss theater in Rome and the Greek east with a definition of performance incorporating not only stage performances but also dinnertime entertainment sporting events and political events. Contributors are T. D. Barnes K. M. Coleman J. C. Edmonson E. R. Gebhard J. R. Green E. J. Jory W. D. Lebek and D. S. Potter. Individual chapters combine literary evidence with archaeological thereby engendering a deeper appreciation for the social and political roles of Roman theater. It becomes clear that these roles were of great influence in giving voice to the popular demands of the average Roman. In examining the roles of theater the contributors turn to the players and audience themselves for deeper understanding. . University of Michigan Press hardcover

THE GOVERNOR AND HIS SUBJECTS IN THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE
Brill Academic Publishers. Fine with no dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 9004150706 . This book presents new insights into the dynamics of the relationship between governors and provincial subjects in the Later Roman Empire with a focus on the provincial perspective. Based on literary legal epigraphic and artistic materials the author deals with questions such as how provincials communicated their needs to governors how they expressed both their favorable and critical opinions of governors behavior and how they rewarded good governors. Provincial expectations a continuous dialogue interdependence reciprocity and ceremonial routine play key roles in this study that not only leads to a better understanding of Late Roman provincial administration but also of the successful functioning of an empire as large as that of Rome. ; Mnemosyne Supplements ; History and Archaeology of Classical Antiquity 275; 220 pages .
