The subject of this volume is Jean Victor Marie Moreau 1763-1813 a French General under Napoleon Bonaparte who was banished from France in 1803. He arrived in New York City in 1805 and settled near the Delaware River in northern New Jersey. In 1813 he returned to Europe and was mortally wounded at the Battle of Dresden in August 1813. Very scarce. In Very Good- Condition: lacking much of paper over spine; boards are lightly soiled and rubbed with some loss of paper; light foxing throughout heavier on title page and a few other pages; otherwise clean and tight. Scrive Voltaire in data primo maggio 1765 di quest'opera: "On vient de traduire de langlais lHistoire du règne de la reine Anne dAngleterre, contenant les négociations de la paix dUtrecht et les démêlés quelle occasionna en Angleterre. Ouvrage posthume du docteur Jonathan Swift, publié sur un manuscrit corrigé de la propre main de lauteur. Volume in-12 de plus de quatre cents pages. La partie intéressante de cet ouvragea été traduite par M. le baron dHolbach, et le reste par M. Eidous, traducteur à la toise, qui sest chargé des soins de lédition. Cette histoire ne contient que les quatre dernières années du règne de la reine Anne. Cest un ouvrage bien fait; mais cest un ouvrage de parti, et par conséquent il ne faut pas le lire sans précaution. Le but du célèbre doyen était de justifier les mesures de milord Bolingbroke et du nouveau ministère de la reine Anne contre les imputations de lancien et des partisans de Marlborough; mais il est des causes malheureuses que le plus habile avocat ne saurait se permettre de défendre avec succès. Ce nest pas la capacité quon déniera au doyen : on lit son écrit avec grand plaisir; mais la cause quil défend nen est pas moins restée désespérée: quoi quon dise et quoi quon écrive, on aura de la peine à persuader à un homme de bon sens que les conférences de Gertruydenberg aient dû être survies par le congrès dUtrecht. Quand on voit à quoi ont abouti tant de merveilleux efforts du génie du prince Eugène et du duc de Marlborough, on est tenté de senvelopper dans le manteau de lindifférence, pour le reste de ses jours, sur toutes les affaires de ce monde".
