Valeriano Castiglione, printed by Giacomo Hertz, Venetia (Venice), 1672.History of Italian monarchs during darkest of the Dark Ages, or the period following the fall of the Roman Empire til around 1000 A.D., with 3 double-page engraved maps of Sweden, Lombardy, and Piedmont. This striking and uncommon map of Scandinavia includes nice topographical detail, with the region's mountains and forests graphically depicted. Place names are mostly concentrated along the coasts, although there are some scattered about the interior. A sailing ship appears in the Gulf of Bothnia, and another is shown in the Norwegian Sea, here called Germanicum Mare Vulgo de Noord Zee. The decorative title cartouche at top right features two coats of arms and a stately lion wearing a crown and holding a flag, axe, and scepter. The author, Emanuele Tesauro (1592-1675), dramatist and rhetorician, chiefly celebrated as a Marinist poet, served as court historian to the dedicatee, Charles Emanuel II Duke of Savoy (1634-75), who sponsored some of the finest architecture in Turin and savagely suppressed the Waldenses.Copperplate, good condition.‎

Juni 1868 in Wien; ? 26. April 1939 ebenda) war ein österreichischer Kunsthistoriker. Als Sohn eines Privatiers geboren, studierte Dreger nach dem Besuch des Wiener Schottengymnasiums Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Wien, unter anderem bei Franz Wickhoff, Alois Riegl und Otto Benndorf sowie am Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung in Wien und am Österreichischen Historischen Institut bei Theodor Sickel in Rom. Während seines Studiums wurde er 1887 Mitglied der Burschenschaft Libertas Wien. In Wien wurde er 1891 zum Dr. phil. promoviert. Er arbeitete im Kupferstichkabinett der Wiener Hofbibliothek. Er unternahm Studienreisen durch Europa und den Orient. Er nahm auch an einer Expedition in die Dobrudscha teil und war an der Ausgrabung eines Trojanmonuments beteiligt. Von 1879 bis 1899 war er Kustos und dann Vizedirektor am Österreichischen Museum für Kunst und Industrie, wo er sich insbesondere um die Textilsammlung verdient machte. 1901 habilitierte er an der Universität Wien. Von 1917 bis 1926 war er ordentlicher Professor an der Universität Innsbruck, dann bis 1936 an der TH Wien. Nebenbei war er schriftstellerisch tätig. (Quelle Wikipedia)‎

From the first article: "From the photographs taken over time, we chose those which best capture a special artistic quality with their strictly documentary value. This selection of manuscripts ends before the dawn of the 16th century, given the common view that after the fall of Constantinople (1453) we can no longer speak of a truly Byzantine culture, but only of a Byzantine style, albeit one which continued to shine. The selection of images was also intended to emphasize not only the aesthetics of the illuminated folios, but also those details that are significant for the codices as a whole, things which would dryly translate today as typeface font type, page layout and binding. Far from the sight of all interested parties, the Byzantine manuscripts in the Bucharest repositories are still full of mysteries waiting to be discovered and explained by researchers. We present these images here to provide a platform for a wider discussion of the significance of the Byzantine legacy for Romanian pre-modern culture. For the identification and description of the items chosen we used several catalogues, either manuscript or in print, which we then compared with the corresponding labels used by the repositories. The bibliography at the end of the volume indicates the various catalogues used for each collection. We found a wealth of details pertaining to the manuscript collections of the Romanian Patriarchy in the album published by the archimandrite Policarp. This is an excellent occasion to thank the specialists involved in the inventory of the collection for the additional information they supplied. We extend our warmest gratitude to them.Here and there we updated and corrected the information found in the aforementioned sources in the light of recent research: the dating of ms. sl. II 280, from the Library of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Antim Monastery. We thank Mrs Tatiana Popova (University of St. Petersburg in Severodvinsk), for the observation that we are dealing with a direct copy, made at the end of the 14th century, of the Russian metropolitan Kyprian's reworking (dated 1385) of the Ladder of John Climax. Ms. sl. II 280 belongs to a group of manuscripts kept at Antim Monastery, but originates from a collection in Slava Rusa, a settlement in Dobrogea and a known...".‎
