L'autore, cardinale dedito alla storiografia, fu nunzio apostolico nelle Fiandre dal 1607 al 1615, poi fino al 1621 in Francia. Il volume ebbe una rilevanza europea e in realtà fu ultimato nel 1640, con aggiunte. La prima parte fu pubblicata nel 1633 e poi nel 1635. Nel presente volume si tratta del periodo fra il 1578 e il 1590 circa. .

Due tomi in un volume in 4° grande, elegante legatura in mezza pergamena, titolo al tassello in pelle al dorso ornato da fregi in oro, sguardie, frontespizio silografico con titolo entro monumentale cornice architettonica (ex-libris manoscritto al margine inferiore), dedicatoria alla principessa di Spagna, occhiello, dedicatoria al Cardinal Borghese, sommario del primo tomo, 10 cc., 212 pp., 11 cc. di indice, 1 carta bianca, occhiello e sommario al secondo tomo, 179 pp, 1 bianca, 6 cc. di indice, bianca finale. Importante e rara edizione originale delle Relazioni del cardinale Bentivoglio, grande diplomatico, letterato, uomo di stato e di chiesa. Formatosi a Padova, Bentivoglio successivamente intraprese una brillante carriera ecclesiastica e su disposizione di Paolo V assunse il ruolo di ambasciatore pontificio dapprima nelle Fiandre e poi a Parigi. Questo lavoro contiene una relazione storica e geografica delle Provincie unite di Fiandra, una descrizione degli avvenimenti civili, bellici e religiosi dei Paesi bassi, in relazione ai maggiori stati europei. L’eloquente contenuto di queste relazioni formerà più tardi il testo Delle “Guerre di Fiandra”. Bell’esemplare, ben conservato, una soffusa brunitura dovuta al tipo di carta, un piccolo ricamo di tarlo al margine inferiore bianco, alle prime cinque carte del secondo tomo.
