In the mid 19th century the national campaign for literacy and historical knowledge in France mandated an increasing reliance on illustrated texts. Théodose Burette's "Histoire de France" is a fine example for enabling the past to "speak for itself" through the union of the text with more than 500 illustrations by Jules David "that other historian the illustrator". Burettes and David's groundbreaking work would influence historical narration and illustration for the next thirty years to the "histoires populaires" of Henri Martin and Victor Duruy in the Second Empire. ‎BURGEN DER KREUZRITTER im Heiligen Land, auf Zypern und in der Ägäis. Die Kühnheit und die Ausmaße der Architektur der Burgen der Kreuzritter, die auf europäischem Boden kaum ihresgleichen besitzen, gehören zu den wesentlichen Grundlagen des ritterlichen Zeitalters unserer Geschichte. Es ist geraume Zeit her, daß die Wissenschaft sich mit diesen Burgen befaßt hat. Der Verfasser des vorliegenden Bandes, Archäologe und Architekt zugleich, hat sich seit Jahren der Erforschung jener, in unwirtlichen Landschaften gelegenen Festungsbauten gewidmet und sie zum Teil erstmalig vermessen. Der bekannte Londoner Photograph, A. F. Kersting, mit Land und Leuten vertraut, hat in mehrfachen Bereisungen die weit verstreuten und unzugänglichen Burgen aufgesucht und aufgenommen. Die Aufgabe zu bewältigen war schwierig, erstreckt sich das Gebiet doch über die Türkei und den Libanon, über Syrien, Israel, Griechenland, Rhodos und Zypern. Aus der Fülle seiner Bilder wurden für den Band 160 einfarbige und 7 farbige ausgewählt.
