Similarly they give little thought to the size of military forces available to Rome when its commitments were outstripping its resources. ‎Oxford University Press. Very Good. 1993. Softcover. 0198149395 . Former owner's bookplate on inner cover. Light shelfwear. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 600 pages; This book explores the practicalities cultural assumptions and affective possibilities of marriage during the later Republic and the Principate. It offers a fresh look at the interaction of law and reality within Roman marriage and builds on the accumulation of legal scholarship in the field as well as on the the latest insights into Roman society. Treggiari demonstrates that marriage affected a Roman woman's social status and that while the socio-legal effect on a man was far less striking marriage did enable a man to father legitimate children the main object of the institution. The study also addresses the influences on the choice of partner behavioral norms and motives for divorce. . Oxford University Press paperback‎

‎ROMAN FORTRESSES AND THEIR LEGIONS Papers in Honour of George C. Boon FSA FRHistS‎

‎National Museums and Galleries of Wales/Society of Antiquaries of London. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0854312749 . Occasional Papers of the Society of Antiquaries of London No. 20; 208 pages; Roman Fortresses and their Legions had its origins in a conference held in 1992 and contains 11 papers by leading Roman military archaeologists on the fortresses of Roman legions from Britain Germany and the Danube region to the eastern empire. It will appeal to both general and specialist readers interested in Roman military archaeology. Historians including the pioneer antiquaries have long realised that the study of the legions is fundamental to our understanding of the history of the Roman Empire. The essays in this volume contributed by some of today's foremost scholars of Roman army studies range across the whole of the Roman Empire - including Britain the Danube lands and the eastern provinces - and cover a wide variety of themes. Authors effectively combine evidence derived from ancient sources and inscriptions with the rapidly growing amount of information and detail obtained from archaeological excavation. The volume covers the period from Augustus when the plans of permanent legionary fortresses were beginning to evolve to the Late Empire when the legion was a very different body from that with which we are familiar in the early imperial period. The essays are dedicated to the late George C Boon FSA FRHistS to mark his vast contribution to Roman scholarship. . ‎DIE LINKE HAND Wahrnehmung Und Bewertung in Der Griechischen Und Römischen Antike‎

‎Franz Steiner Verlag. Near Fine. 2010. Softcover. 3515094490 . Very light rubbing else Fine. ; Heidelberger Althistorische Beitrage Und Epigraphische Studien Band 47; Vol. 47; 283 pages; English summary: Human perception includes the division of space into left and right. In general left holds a negative connotation: A clumsy man appears linkisch in German links meaning left and the term translates as awkward. If you conned him he has been gelinkt. For a long time this negative coloring was also closely associated with the image of left-handers: Left-handers were often regarded as disabled appeared awkward and antisocial and were exposed to discrimination. To understand the people of ancient Greece and Rome one must understand the role right and left played in their perception and evaluation of the world. Henning Wirth studies the following questions from an ancient historical perspective: How did the Greeks and Romans perceive left What role was provided to the left hand in a dominantly right-handed world where the right hand attested Godly effectiveness And how does one explain the phenomenon of left-handedness and assessment of left-handed people German text. ‎CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN ANCIENT ROME‎

‎Routledge. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 041511375X . 240 pages; Crime and punishment have concerned humanity since the beginning of social life. Their manifestations in ancient Rome remains a fascinating topic as the law of most European countries today is derived from ancient Roman law. Richard A. Bauman tells the history of punishment from the Roman Republic to the late Empire shedding light on some decisive aspects of Roman history. He assesses punishment according to its innate humanity and cruelty traces the changes in Roman attitudes laws and practices during this era. Trials for treason sedition and corruption illuminate political history; common law crimes like murder and forgery that sharpen our perception of social history; discussions of freedom of speech increase our understanding of intellectual history; and religious persecutions fill out the picture of religious history. In its scope and focus this is an unprecedented study painting a vivid picture of the theory and practice of punishment in ancient Rome. . Routledge hardcover‎

‎Williams, Hugh P. G.‎

‎CARAUSIUS A Consideration of the Historical Archaeological and Numismatic Aspects of His Reign‎

‎Archaeopress. Fine. 2004. Softcover. 1841716561 . British Archaeological Reports B. A. R. British Series 378; 101 pages; This study relates the significant bronze coinage of the usurper Carausius 286-93 to the archaeological and historical evidence from the period. Since the publication of Roman Imperial Coinage. Volume Vii in 1933 many new and significant coin types have appeared. Several important hoards have been published in the intervening years which throw a new light on discussions of the chronology of the coinage enabling a modified sequence of issues to be postulated. Part of an important hoard discovered in the 1980Aes has been reconstituted. Much information regarding the archaeology of Roman Britain in the latter half of the third century has been published during the last three decades and this is discussed in conjunction with the coin evidence of site finds. Consideration is made of the probable methods employed in the striking of the coinage and a new mathematical method is invoked to yield a more accurate picture of the supply of coinage under the Carausian administration. A study of the metrology of the bronze coinage is made and this includes the illustration of the metrology with a three-dimensional surface using computer graphics. Consideration of the geographical distribution of the index-marked coinage has enabled a new interpretation of the location of the minting centres to be forwarded. The older historical sources have been reconsidered and important new interpretations have been made. Certain aspects of the coinage which relate to the history have been examined in the light of newly discovered coin types. The study involved the examination of approximately seven thousand specimens of the coinage from both public and private collections and excavations. . Archaeopress paperback‎

‎MEDICAL CARE FOR THE ROMAN ARMY ON THE RHINE DANUBE AND BRITISH FRONTIERS IN THE FIRST SECOND AND EARLY THIRD CENTURIES AD‎

‎British Archaeological Reports. Fine. 2004. Softcover. 1841713783 . British Archaeological Reports BAR International Series 1286; 204 pages; This detailed study of military medical practice on the western frontiers of the Roman army aims to discover whether legionary and auxilliary units were treated differently whether local civilians were also treated by military doctors and if the soldier's location impacted on his medical treatment. At the heart of this wide-ranging study is an analysis of medical instruments discovered at frontier sites such as Housesteads Wallsend Carnuntum Caerleon Xanten Mainz and many others. Patricia Anne Baker examines the scientific function and production of these implements whilst also discussing what they and written sources reveal about Roman attitudes towards illness and the nature of physical examinations and medical care especially among soldiers at the edges of Roman influence. The impact on local populations of the Roman presence and living on a frontier is also considered. Includes a catalogue of forts sites and implements. . British Archaeological Reports paperback‎

‎TACITUS THULE AND CALEDONIA The Achievements of Agricola's Navy in Their True Perspective‎

‎Archaeopress. Fine. 2008. Softcover. 1407302744 . British Archaeological Reports B. A. R. British Series 459; 118 pages; The purpose of this book is to put the achievements of Agricolas navy apparently understated by Tacitus in their true perspective with the proposition that the Roman fleet reached the furthest limit of the known world Thule or Mainland Shetland where it located a convenient anchorage possibly in Lerwick harbour. To support this theory firstly the identification of Thule as Shetland during the classical period from the time of Pytheas onwards is investigated through collation of geographical sources secondly the earliest manuscript of Tacitus Agricola comes under closer scrutiny at the relevant points than ever before and finally contemporary literature is reassessed to determine the significance of Caledonia and Thule in the Flavian propaganda machine and to suggest the first Roman presence in the Shetland Islands. . ‎LEGIO XX VALERIA VICTRIX Prosopography Archaeology and History‎

‎Archaeopress. Fine. 2006. Softcover. 1841719226 . British Archaeological Reports BAR International Series 1491; 287 pages; This study of legio XX Valeria Victrix combines a personal historical and archaeological approach to the study of the legion roughly the first four centuries after Christ as a whole. Epigraphic and historical evidence is presented for all those individuals known to have served with the Twentieth Legion in their various capacities. Sources are quoted with translation for each of these and significant details of the careers discussed. Further aspects of careers generally are considered at the end of the relevant sections. This corpus is supported by a number of indices of nomenclature origins ranks service and posts held in other units etc. as well as an index of primary sources. Other inscriptions attesting to the presence of the Twentieth legion and its activities in various quarters of the Empire are also collected and presented. This epigraphic evidence is drawn together with that of the archaeological and historical sources and with the copious modern literature on the subject of the Roman Army to present a history of the Twentieth Legion from its formation out of the legions of the civil wars of the late Republic to its uncertain end in the changing conditions of the late third and fourth centuries. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of individuals and the light that their careers can shed on the history and activities of the legion. Studies on a number of other aspects of the history and organization of the legion are appended. . Archaeopress paperback‎

‎CICERO AND THE CATILINARIAN CONSPIRACY‎

‎Routledge. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2010. Hardcover. 0415874726 . Bottom corners slightly bumped else Fine. ; Routledge Studies in Ancient History Vol. 1; 118 pages; This story of Cicero and the Catilinarian Conspiracy is set within and offers a case study of the political military economic and social crises besetting the late Roman Republic in the era of the "Roman Revolution." The book chronicles the efforts of the defeated radical politician Lucius Sergius Catilina to bring together a group of disaffected Roman nobles and discontented Italian farmers in a conspiracy to overthrow the republican government at Rome and to take control of the Italian peninsula while the proconsul Pompey the Great and the majority of Roman military units were campaigning in the Near East and the success of the conservative optimate consul Marcus Tullius Cicero in uncovering the conspiracy driving Catiline out of Rome and defeating his revolutionary followers in the capital and in Etruria. The narrative reveals the political corruption economic problems and military instability which were leading to the demise of the republican system and the rise of an imperial government in the first century B. C. The author’s comprehensive knowledge of the ancient sources and the modern scholarship relevant to the last century of the republic has allowed him to offer a detailed and definitive account of this important episode in Roman history. In the same seamless combination of vivid narrative and historical analysis through which he enlightened the Roman imperial age of Constantine Dr. Odahl here illuminates the Roman republican era of Cicero. This book is a significant publication in Ciceronian studies and will become the standard account of the Catilinarian Conspiracy. . Routledge hardcover‎
