THEODERIC IN ITALY
Oxford Clarendon Press. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0198147813 . Very minor shelfwear to book else Fine. DJ is protected in plastic sleeve. ; Special Edition for Sandpiper Books; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 0.75 x 9 x 6 Inches; 312 pages; The career of Theoderic the Ostrogoth is one of the great success stories of antiquity. From being a ruler of a barbarian people wandering around the Balkans he became king in Italy 493-526 and established one of the most powerful of the post-Roman states. Due to its ample documentation the Italy of Theoderic allows detailed examination of a period on the frontiers of ancient and medieval Roman and barbarian. And due to his success in attracting the attention of some of the major literary figures of the time new light is cast on Boethius Cassiodorus and Ennodius when they are considered in the context of their connections with the government. Yet Theoderic's reign so praised by contemporaries ended amid tension and discord. In this study Moorhead considers whether the principles with which he governed brought about the impermanence of his achievement. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE
Routledge. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 041513594X . DJ has very minor shelfwear else Fine ; This provocative and often controversial volume examines the notions of ethnicity citizenship and nationhood to determine what constituted cultural identity in the Roman Empire. The contributors draw together the most recent research and use diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives from archaeology classical studies and ancient history to challenge our basic assumptions of Romanization and how parts of Europe became incorporated into a Roman culture. Cultural Identity in the Roman Empire breaks new ground arguing that the idea of a unified and easily defined Roman culture is over-simplistic and offers alternative theories and models. ; 205 pages . FEEDING THE ROMAN ARMY The Archaeology of Production and Supply in NW Europe
Oxbow Books. Fine. 2008. Softcover. 1842173235 . These ten papers from two Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference 2007 sessions bring together a growing body of new archaeological evidence in an attempt to reconsider the way in which the Roman army was provisioned. Clearly the adequate supply of food was essential to the success of the Roman military. But what was the nature of those supply networks Did the army rely on imperial supply lines from the continent as certainly appears to be the case for some commodities or were provisions requisitioned from local agricultural communities If the latter was the case was unsustainable pressure placed on such resources and how did local communities respond Alternatively did the early stages of conquest include not only the development of a military infrastructure but also an effective supply-chain network based on contracts Beyond the initial stages of conquest how were provisioning arrangements maintained in the longer term did supply chains remain static or did they change over time and if so what precipitated those changes Addressing such questions is critical if we are to understand the nature of Roman conquest and the extent of interaction between indigenous communities and the Roman army. Case studies come from Roman Britain Alchester Cheshire Dorset France the Netherlands and the Rhine Delta looking at evidence from animal products military settlements the size of cattle horses pottery and salt. The editors also provide a review of current research and suggest a future agenda for economic and environmental research. ; 160 pages . Oxbow Books paperback

Minor shelfwear to book. ; Carl Newell Jackson Lectures; 9.5 x 1.5 x 6.75 Inches; 624 pages; From Augustus to Constantine the Roman Empire in the Near East expanded step by step southward to the Red Sea and eastward across the Euphrates to the Tigris. In a remarkable work of interpretive history Fergus Millar shows us this world as it was forged into the Roman provinces of Syria Judaea Arabia and Mesopotamia. His book conveys the magnificent sweep of history as well as the rich diversity of peoples religions and languages that intermingle in the Roman Near East. Against this complex backdrop Millar explores questions of cultural and religious identity and ethnicity--as aspects of daily life in the classical world and as part of the larger issues they raise. As Millar traces the advance of Roman control he gives a lucid picture of Rome's policies and governance over its far-flung empire. He introduces us to major regions of the area and their contrasting communities bringing out the different strands of culture communal identity language and religious belief in each. The Roman Near East makes it possible to see rabbinic Judaism early Christianity and eventually the origins of Islam against the matrix of societies in which they were formed. Millar's evidence permits us to assess whether the Near East is best seen as a regional variant of Graeco-Roman culture or as in some true sense oriental. A masterful treatment of a complex period and world distilling a vast amount of literary documentary artistic and archaeological evidence--always reflecting new findings--this book is sure to become the standard source for anyone interested in the Roman Empire or the history of the Near East. . CHANGES IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE Essays in the Ordinary
Princeton University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0691036012 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 416 pages; Written by one of the foremost historians of the Roman Empire this collection of both new and previously published essays forms a colorful picture of daily life in the Mediterranean world between A.D. 50 and 450. Here for example the author applies statistical analysis to broad groups of people on matters ranging from justice through medicine to language. In so doing he is able to substantiate general statements about routines in ordinary people's behavior and to detect within these routines the very changes that constitute history. Such analysis also shows how this era benefits from the same historiographical approaches that have so successfully elucidated sociocultural phenomena in other periods. Drawing from statistical analysis and many other historical approaches these essays on popular mores in the Roman Empire cover such topics as language and art acculturation thought and religion sex and gender cruelty and slavery and aspects of class and power relations. The author introduces the collection with several essays on historical method as it pertains to the richness of documentation and variety to be found in the region and period chosen. . CONSTANTINE AND THE BISHOPS The Politics of Intolerance
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0801862183 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. ; Ancient Society and History; 1.68 x 8.76 x 8.78 Inches; 632 pages; Historians who viewed imperial Rome in terms of a conflict between pagans and Christians have often regarded the emperor Constantine's conversion as the triumph of Christianity over paganism. But in Constantine and the Bishops historian H. A. Drake offers a fresh and more nuanced understanding of Constantine's rule and especially of his relations with Christians. Constantine Drake suggests was looking not only for a god in whom to believe but also a policy he could adopt. Uncovering the political motivations behind Constantine's policies Drake shows how those policies were constructed to ensure the stability of the empire and fulfill Constantine's imperial duty in securing the favor of heaven. Despite the emperor's conversion to Christianity Drake concludes Rome remained a world filled with gods and with men seeking to depose rivals from power. A book for students and scholars of ancient history and religion Constantine and the Bishops shows how Christian belief motivated and gave shape to imperial rule. . PLUTARCH'S SERTORIUS A Historical Commentary
The University of North Carolina Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 080782139X . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.12 x 9.55 x 6.44 Inches; 316 pages; C. F. Konrad provides the first book-length commentary on Plutarch's Life of Sertorius the work that has shaped most modern interpretations of the man and his career. Quintus Sertorius 126-73 B. C. was a political and military leader during the period of turmoil that ended with the Roman Republic's disintegration just thirty years after his death. A major figure on the losing side in the first civil war 87-82 B. C. he went to Spain to continue the struggle against the ruling senatorial faction with the help of Roman exiles and the native population. His military skill was much admired but his increasingly despotic behavior combined with failing luck in the field eventually prompted Sertorius' assassination by his Roman staff. One of Plutarch's most austere biographies Sertoriuslacks the rich color and wealth of anecdote characteristic of his Antony or Perikles yet it is unsurpassed in its seemingly unbounded sympathy for its subject and is the most substantial source extant on Sertorius. By analyzing Plutarch's method and purpose Konrad develops a more critical and less eulogistic view of Sertorius' character and his actions during this period. The Greek text of Plutarch's biography is included in this book. . The University of North Carolina Press hardcover

THE ROMAN NEAR EAST 31 BC - AD 337
Harvard University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0674778855 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Minor bumping to head of spine. ; Carl Newell Jackson Lectures; 9.5 x 1.5 x 6.75 Inches; 624 pages; From Augustus to Constantine the Roman Empire in the Near East expanded step by step southward to the Red Sea and eastward across the Euphrates to the Tigris. A masterful treatment of a complex period and world distilling a vast amount of literary documentary artistic and archaeological evidence--always reflecting new findings--this book is sure to become the standard source for anyone interested in the Roman Empire or the history of the Near East. .
