THE FOUNDATION OF ROME Myth and History
Cornell University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 080143114X . Top corners lightly bumped. Light general soiling. ; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 236 pages; "The Foundation of Rome is one of the few intelligent books on the subject neither hypercritical nor visionary; its particular strength lies in the skillful interweaving of modern historiography and ideology with ancient history. "--Jerzy Linderski University of North Carolina. At once a historical essay and a self-conscious meditation on the writing of history The Foundation of Rome takes as its starting point a series of accounts of Rome's origins offered over the course of centuries. Alexandre Grandazzi places these accounts in their contemporary contexts and shows how the growing sophistication in methodology gradually changed the accepted views of the city's origins. He looks for example at the hypercritical philology of the nineteenth century which cast aside everything that could not be verified. He then explains how the increase in archaeological discoveries and changing archaeological techniques influenced the story of Rome's birth. Grandazzi produces a depiction of Rome's origins that is both up-to-date and provocative. His use of scientific parallels in describing changes in the ways texts were analyzed and his broad familiarity with comparative material make his synthesis particularly illuminating and he writes with clarity verve and wit. . THE ARGUMENTS OF THE EMPEROR JULIAN AGAINST THE CHRISTIANS Translated from the Greek Fragments Preserved by Cyril Bishop of Alexandria; to Which Are Added Extracts from the Other Works of Julian Relative to the Christians
Ares Publishers Inc. Fine with no dust jacket. 1980. Hardcover. 0890053014 . Exact Reprint of the Tetypeset original 1809 Chicago 1930 ARES PUBLISHERS INC. In his school edict Julian prohibits Christian teachers from using pagan scripts e. G. The Illias that formed the core of Roman education. This was an attempt to remove some of the power of Christian schools by alienating their students from Roman society not to mention a satirical attack at what Julian may have viewed as a hypocrisy: Christian schools teaching the Bible as the sole source of knowledge while simultaneously teaching classical pagan texts as well knowledge of which was needed for success in Roman society. In his tolerance edict of 362 Julian decreed the reopening of pagan temples the restitution of alienated temple properties and called back Christian bishops that were exiled by church edicts. The latter was an instance of tolerance of different religious views but may also have been an attempt by Julian to widen a schism between different Christian sects further weakening the Christian movement as a whole. ; 8.25 x 0.5 x 5.5 Inches; 119 pages . FINAL JUDGMENTS Duty and Emotion in Roman Wills 200 B.C.-A.D.
University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0520071034 . Light rubbing to DJ. Former owner's signature. ; Freed from the familial and social obligations incumbent on the living the Roman testator could craft his will to be a literal "last judgment" on family friends and society. The Romans were fascinated by the contents of wills believing the will to be a mirror of the testator's true character and opinions. The wills offer us a unique view of the individual Roman testator's world. Just as classicists ancient historians and legal historians will find a mine of information here the general reader will be fascinated by the book's lively recounting of last testaments. Who were the testators and what were their motives Why do family kin servants friends and community all figure in the will and how are they treated What sort of afterlife did the Romans anticipate By examining wills the book sets several issues in a new light offering new interpretations of or new insights into subjects as diverse as captatio inheritance- seeking the structure of the Roman family the manumission of slaves public philanthropy the afterlife and the relation of subject to emperor. Champlin's principal argument is that a strongly felt "duty of testacy" informed and guided most Romans a duty to reward or punish all who were important to them a duty which led them to write their wills early in life and to revise them frequently. ; 228 pages .
