Sadler, John; Rosie Serdiville
Caesar's Greatest Victory: The Battle of Alesia 52BC
Oxford and Philadelphia: Casemate Publishers. New in New dust jacket. 2016. First Printing. Hard Cover. 1612004059 . Publisher's full blue cloth silber lettering on spine. Illustrated with color photographs and maps. The Battle for Alesia was a decisive moment in world history. It determined whether Rome would finally conquer Gaul or whether Celtic chieftain Vercingetorix would throw off the yoke and consequently whether a number of independent Celtic tribal kingdoms could resist the might of Rome. Failure would have been a total defeat for Julius Caesar not just in Gaul but in the Senate. His career would have been over his enemies would have pulled him down civil war would have ensued no dictatorship no liaison with Cleopatra. Rome would not have become an empire beyond the Mediterranean. European and therefore world history might have been a very different story. Caesar's campaign of 52 BC frequently hung in the balance. Vercingetorix was a far more formidable opponent than any encountered in Gaul; bold charismatic and imbued with strategic insight of the highest order. The Romans were caught totally off-guard and it seemed all too likely their grip on Gaul which Caesar had imagined secure would be prised free. The Siege of Alesia itself was one of the most astonishing military undertakings of all times. Caesar's interior siege lines stretched for 18 kilometres and were surrounded by an outward facing line three kilometres longer complete with palisades towers ditches minefields and outposts. This work was completed in less than three weeks. Vercingetorix's refuge proved a trap and despite an energetic defence and the arrival of a huge relief army there was to be no escape. Caesar's Greatest Victory fully reveals both sides of the conflict to explore in depth the personalities involved and to examine the legacy of the campaign which still resonates today. The arms equipment tactics and fighting styles of Roman and Celtic armies are explained as well as the charisma and leadership of Caesar and Vercingetorix and the command and control structures of both sides. Using new evidence from archaeology the authors construct a fresh account of not just the siege itself but also the Alesia campaign and place it into the wider context of the history of warfare. This is Roman history at its most exciting featuring events still talked about today. Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket are in perfect pristine condition; unread unmarked tight square and clean. NEW/NEW. Color Photographs and Maps. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 210 pp . Monti, Laura V. (Ed)
French Revolutionary Pamphlets at the University of Florida
Gainesville FL: University of Florida Libraries. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1971. 1st Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. This list of French Revolutionary pamphlets is a list of those pamphlets acquired by the History Department of the University of Florida in 1957. These pamphlets represent only a fraction of the University Libraries' holdings. Many others are in the general collection where they are catalogued and classified individually. To retrieve them to be included in this list was considered impractical and too costly a task. In general the List of French Revolutionary Pamphlets published in the Bulletin of the New York Public Library is the most popular among historians of the period and for this reason has been chosen as the authority for entries of authors and corporate bodies official and unofficial. However the present list differs from the New York work in that institutions are not here listed separately but together alphabetically with authors. The original spelling of the pamphlets has been retained in this list even though occasionally erroneous. Volume shows only mild shelf-wear else fine. NEAR FINE. . 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. vii 166 pp . University of Florida Libraries hardcover

Stanhope, Earl Philip Henry
Life of The Right Honorable William Pitt Three Volumes Complete With Extracts from his Ms. Papers New Edition with Portraits in Three Volumes
London: John Murray. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1879. 1. Hard Cover. Three Volumes Complete. Original publisher's blue boards with gilt-ruled titles on spines and gilt armorial medallion of Pitt's monogram on covers. Blind-stamped monogram on spines. Embossed borders. Dark grey endpapers. Illustrated with engraved portraits: Volumes I and II have handsome portrait frontispieces and Volume III has a facsimile of Pitt's writing as its frontispiece. Earl Stanhope's biography has long been the authorative work on William Pitt the Younger 1759-1806. It is "an indispensable authority on the history of the period." DNB Stanhope was an industrious historian who had the advantage of family connections which guaranteed him access to important manuscript sources then in private hands. The earl was thus able to include a great many letters and much other information that had never before been made public. Volume 1 deals with Pitt's life up to the year 1793 he became Prime Minister in 1784 at the age of 25 and was Prime Minister for almost the whole of the ensuing 20 years; Volume 2 deals with the period 1793 - 1801; and Volume 3 deals with the period 1801-1806. Napoleon in his musings from St Helena always represented himself as a peace-loving individual who was opposed by a wicked Pitt. And it was certainly partly due to Pitt among others that Napoleon did not succeed in his dream of uniting Europe. An outstanding biography of Britain's longest-serving Prime Minister and an essential tool in understanding the politics of the Napoleonic period. . Heads and heels of spines rubbed. All corners lightly bumped. Spines slightly rubbed. Contents near fine with very little foxing. Portraits are very attractive engravings. A very good set of this essential work. Scarce. VERY GOOD. 8vo 9 x 6". xiv 494 2; 10 x 464; x 461 3 pp . John Murray hardcover

Publisher's full green cloth gilt lettering on spine gilt medallion on cover. English translation by W. R. Paton. Text in Greek and English. Polybius c.200 c.118 BC was a Greek historian of the Hellenistic Period noted for his work The Histories which covered the period of 264146 BC in detail. The work describes the rise of the Roman Republic to the status of dominance in the ancient Mediterranean world and included his eyewitness account of the Sack of Carthage in 146 BC. Polybius is also renowned for his ideas concerning the separation of powers in government later used in Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws and in the drafting of the United States Constitution.
