‎Over the course of the fifteenth century easel paintings edged out tapestries, frescoes and wood inlay pictures on the walls of private dwellings. Millions of such paintings were produced in the period 1450-1800, in all shapes and sizes, and across the whole range of prices. Who bought them? How were they distributed? What place did they occupy among other "luxury" possessions? Such questions seem to require that visual culture be treated as an integral part of family spending and commercial pursuits. This volume is the outcome of a four-year collaboration between art historians, economists, social historians and museum professionals from the US, Australia and Europe; its aim was to map the new ground identified by these and related questions, in local contexts, but with comparative and longitudinal concerns constantly in mind. The result is an entirely new matrix of the business and artistic interactions through which visual cultures in early modern Europe were formed. The editors, Neil De Marchi and Hans J. Van Miegroet, an economist and an art historian, have collaborated across their disciplines for ten years. Here they have interspersed participants' essays with brief connecting observations, to produce a text that respects disciplinary expertise while making connections across locations and across time. ‎Rubens book Palazzi di Genova' was well diffused in European countries as England, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Italy thanks to the numerous contacts the famous painter and diplomat maintained in humanistic, artistic and political circles. From 1622 on this book, containing two volumes, was edited at several times during the 17th and 18th Century. But the direct influences of the numerous facades, plans, cross-sections, staircases and building details on modern architecture look rather limited, especially in his own country. In this study, several scholars in architectural history analyse how the examples of Genoese palazzi and churches as presented by Rubens were accepted in different European countries. Much attention is given to the question if these examples inspired a new architectural typology, in which the inner court of the houses was substituted by a 'salone in mezzo'. An attempt is made to situate Rubens' book among the late 16th and early 17th Century treatises and model books. The way in which Rubens presented the new Genoese architecture of villa's, palaces and churches and the introduction he wrote as a 'painter-architect' to this book were so modern at that time, that the reception of this prestigious edition in folio had more to do with changes in considering architectural theory and practice as with the propagation of a late renaissance style influenced by Antique examples. ‎Ces Actes des Journees d'etude internationales (Strasbourg, 6-7 novembre 2009) sont l'aboutissement d?un programme de recherche (2007-2009), mene au sein de l'UMR 7044 (Etude des civilisations de l'Antiquite : de la Prehistoire a Byzance), sur la place du cheval dans l'empire byzantin. Les 14 contributions qu'ils reunissent sont consacrees au cheval de guerre et de loisir dans l'Antiquite et au Moyen Age. L?ouvrage est divise en trois sections. Dans la premiere, les contributeurs analysent la naissance du corps de cavalerie dans l?armee romaine et ses emplois. Sont egalement etudies les differences regionales du pourtour mediterraneen dans l?elevage du cheval, les prix pratiques ou encore les connaissances hippologiques des Anciens. Les travaux qui composent la deuxieme partie proposent des syntheses sur le cheval medieval, byzantin et occidental. Ils abordent le sujet a travers les textes, les sources archeologiques, les representations et les us et coutumes des civilisations etudiees. Enfin, la derniere partie s?interesse aux instruments hippiques, aux armes et a l?hippiatrie. Y sont ainsi reexaminees les innovations, adoptions et adaptations, dans l?Antiquite tardive, des pieces de l?equipement equin essentielles pour le combat, telles que l?etrier et le mors. Les armes des cavaliers sont reevaluees, ainsi que les changements dans leurs techniques de combat suite a la diffusion de l?etrier. On trouvera aussi l?analyse du vocabulaire employe pour l?anatomie du cheval dans la litterature hippiatrique grecque, qui connait a cette periode un essor sans precedent, lie au developpement de la cavalerie romaine et protobyzantine.
