This English edition was never issued with a map, although the plate of Cattaro below Montenegro is a plan view showing ships and town buildings with mountains in background. Other plates include costumes, buildings, view, etc. The author was governor of Cattaro and chief of general staff of the Illyrian army at Ragua.‎

A very well-illustrated description of the Sotheby's sale held in London 26 November 1996 of this famous atlas which had been previously been auctioned 17 years earlier. Mercator was the greatest cartographer of the modern era and this atlas is the most important surviving ensemble of his works anywhere and the only collection ever likely to appear for sale. It consists of the only two known autograph manuscript maps by him, the only surviving copy of his Europe wall map of 1554, other rare wall maps, etc. With detailed and scholarly descriptions.‎

A pi The attractive plates are views of countryside, towns, sea scenes, etc, images of varying size but average about 14 x 10 cm, plus nice large margins, and are a collection made in the 19th century of this famous artist's work. Stanfield (1793-1867), member of the Royal Academy, friend of Charles Dickens and Captain Maryatt, illustrated many fine books and plate books of the period. He is regarded as one of England's finest marine painters, and considered as Turner's rival as a delineator of cloud forms. Many of his works are in important galleries and museums.‎

Neate W78, citing only the American edition: 'Includes account of early Mont Blanc ascents, reproductions of some of Auldjo's engravings, an account of early ascents of the Jungfrau, selections of mountain poetry, etc'. A well-illustrated work that also includes a brief directions for travellers, descriptions of each region in some detail, with approximately a quarter of the content on Italy. The illustrations include numerous views such as Basel, Bern, Brixen, Chamonix, Como, Erlenbach, Geneva, Grindelwald, Interlaken, Lugano, Milan, Padua, Reichenau, Schaffhausen, Schlanders, Trient, Venice, Verona, Zug, etc. No copies are listed in auction records of the last 26 years.‎

A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Blackmer 1729. This English edition was never issued with a map, although the colored plate of Cattaro below Montenegro is a plan view showing ships and town buildings with mountains in background. Other plates include costumes, buildings, view, etc. The author was governor of Cattaro and chief of general staff of the Illyrian army at Ragua.‎
