The Victoria History Of The County Of York Yorkshire North Riding
Constable and Company Ltd.; The St. Catherine Press London 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Three matching volumes all appear to be first editions of this work but published at different dates. Volume One was published in 1914 by Constable and Company Limited the publication of Volume Two was delayed by the Great War and was eventually published in 1923 by the St. Catherine Press the publication of Volume Three in 1913 by Constable predated the publication of Volume One. All volumes contain plates and fold out plans volumes One and Two also have very many inset illustrations. Matching red covers with gilt lettering and decoration on spines and front covers. All spine ends are bumped and lightly rubbed. Volume Three has a small pasted label on the spine. All cover corners are lightly rubbed. Binding in all volumes is sound. Short tears in paper over rear hinge in Volume One. Volume Two has a previous owners name at the front in ink. Volume Three has a small stamp from the University of Capetown Library on the inside of the front cover a small withdrawn stamp on the front end-paper and a date stamped on the inside of the rear cover. Volume One has foxing to end-papers. Fold out plan of Helmsley Castle opposite page 488 has a closed tear from adjacent to the gutter. Clean intact colour fold out plan of Jervaulx Abbey opposite page 282. Plates plans and fold out plans are crisp and clean. 7 double page coloured maps at rear. Volume Two has light foxing to end-papers and vertical block edge. Fold out plan of Mount Grace Charterhouse has short split on one fold contents page xi has horizontal closed tear. Fold out ground plan of Scarborough Castle has light foxing and a short closed tear from the lower gutter edge opposite page 544. Plates pages and plans are clean. Covers are lightly rubbed. Volume Three has light foxing to frontis and adjacent pages. Light foxing to fold out Ecclesiastical Map of Yorkshire and the adjacent page. Small bumps to some page edges.
