Mendelssohn, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
PAULUS. Oratorium nach Worten der Heiligen Schrift.
16 p. 16 mo. 180 mm. Some pencil manuscript annotations indicating the assignment of singing parts. Geman text in Roman letter. Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (generally known as Felix Mendelssohn) [1809-1847] was a German composer, pianist and conductor of the early Romantic period. He was born to a notable Jewish family which later converted to Lutheranism (he was a grandson of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn). His work includes symphonies, concerti, oratorios, piano and chamber music. After a long period of relative denigration due to changing musical tastes and anti Semitism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his creative originality is now being recognized and re-evaluated. He is now among the most popular composers of the Romantic era. The text of his Oratorio on St. Paul, Opus 36 is very rare in this edition. We can locate no other copies. W144

Wilhelm Busch also wrote a number of poems in a similar style to his picture stories. Besides that, he produced more than 1,000 oil paintings that weren't sold before his death in 1908. He was also active as a sculptor. Altogether, a remarkable artist. HUMOR 9

Chamberlain, Houston Stewart.
DER WILLE ZUM SIEG. Und andere Aufsatze.
pp. 59, (4)[Publisher's advertisement]. Text in German Fraktur. 8vo. 205 mm. Original printed wraps, slightly chipped. Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927) was a British-born author of books on political philosophy, natural science, and his posthumous father-in-law Richard Wagner. His two-volume book Die Grundlagen des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts (The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century) (1899) became one of the many references for the pan-Germanic movement of the early 20th century, and, later, of Nazi racial philosophy. Chamberlain had attended Wagner's Bayreuth Festival in 1882 and struck up a close correspondence with his wife Cosima. In 1908 he married Eva Wagner, the composer's daughter, and the next year he moved to Germany and became an important member of the "Bayreuth Circle" of German nationalist intellectuals. By the time World War I broke out in 1914, Chamberlain remained an Englishman only by virtue of his name and nationality. In 1916 he also acquired German citizenship. He had already begun propagandizing on behalf of the German government and continued to do so throughout the war. His vociferous denunciations of his land of birth, were the culmination of his rejection of his native England's stifling capitalism, in favor of a rustic and ultimately naive German Romanticism - Wiki.
