‎ANAKREON UND SAPPHO.‎

‎pp, 186 + Engraved title page. Damp stained. Original boards. Spine taped. "Platos praise of the poets Sappho and Anacreon (Phaedrus 235c) is a sincere tribute to their vivid presentations of the shock of love." Sappho's poetry centers on passion and love for various personages and genders. The word "lesbian" derives from the name of the island of her birth, Lesbos; her name is also the origin of its less common synonym sapphic. The narrators of many of her poems speak of infatuations and love (sometimes requited, sometimes not) for various women, but descriptions of physical acts between women are few. ‎Chuang-tzu.‎

‎REDEN UND GLEICHNISSE DES TSCHUANG-TSE. Deutsche Auswahl von Martin Buber.‎

‎129 p. Tall thin 8vo. Original vellum backed printed paper boards. Chuang-tzu or Chuang-tze (Ca. 369-286 B.C.), Chinese Taoist writer, was a native of the state of Meng, on the border of present-day Shandong and Henan provinces, where lived as a hermit. The collection of essays attributed to him, called the Chuang-tzu, is distinguished by its brilliant and original style, with abundant use of satire, paradox, and seemingly nonsensical stories. Chuang-tzu emphasizes the relativity of all ideas and conventions that are the basis of judgments and distinctions; he puts forward as the solution to the problems of the human condition freedom in identification with the universal Tao, or principle of Nature. He is less political in his orientation than the earlier Taoist Lao Tzu. He is also called Chuang Chou." - Columbia Encyclopedia. It is remarkable to have here a German edition translated and edited by the Jewish philosopher, Martin Buber. OCC 14‎

‎359 p. 12mo. 16 cm. Foxed. Contemporary full leather binding. (American) manuscript ownership of John Meyers. An important collection of German Christian mystical texts. This edition is very scarce, and especially more interesting for its American ownership. Jakob Boehme (or Böhme) [1575-1624], German religious mystic, a cobbler of Görlitz, in England also called Behmen. He was a student of the Bible and was influenced by Paracelsus. In his major works, De signatura rerum (The Signature of all Things) and Mysterium magnum, Boehme describes God as the abyss, the nothing and the all, the primordial depths from which the creative will struggles forth to find manifestation and self-consciousness. Evil is a result of the striving of single elements of Deity to become the whole; conflict ensues as man and nature strive to achieve God who, in himself, contains all antithetical principles. Boehme exerted a profound influence on the philosophies of Baader, Schelling, Hegel, and Schopenhauer. Boehme claimed divine revelation and had many followers in Germany and Holland. Societies of Behmenites were formed in England; many of them were later absorbed by the Quakers. QUITE SCARCE AND IMPORTANT. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PA 011A.
