Hobson condemns indirect taxes which in his view are 'generally worse than worthless for purposes of revenue, producing little, costing much, and interfering with the general productivity of industry and commerce'. In Part I Hobson 'sets forth the principles upon which the tax-system should be reformed in order to provide for debt - charges and reconstruction; and in Part II discusses measures of 'emergency finance', especially the capital levy." ‎Francke, August Hermann.‎

‎DIE WAHRE HERTZENS-BUSSE Aus den Worten des Herrn Im 5. Buch Mos. V. 29. Am BuB-Tage den 14. Jun. 1713. In der St. Georgen-Kirche zu Glaucha vorgestellet. Der Jugend in den Schulen des Waysenhauses, nach gehaltenem Examine, den 19ten Aug. gedachten Jahrs‎

‎pp. (10), 84. Small 12 mo. 130 mm. Early floral wraps. August Hermann Francke (1663-1727) was a great German Protestant churchman and educator. In his early career he came under the influence of the Pietistism. In 1686, at Leipzig, he founded the Collegium Philobiblicum, at which a number of graduates met regularly for the systematic study of the Bible, philologically and practically. He soon became popular as a lecturer; but the peculiarities of his teaching almost immediately aroused a violent opposition. In 1691 he fled Erfurt where he had found work as "deacon" of one of the city churches. Through Spener's influence, Francke accepted an invitation to fill the chair of Greek and oriental languages in the new University of Halle, which was at that time being organized by the elector Frederick III of Brandenburg; and at the same time, the chair having no salary attached to it, he was appointed pastor of Glaucha in the immediate neighborhood of the town. He afterwards became Professor of Theology. For the remaining thirty-six years of his life, he discharged the twofold office of pastor and professor with energy and success. At the very outset of his labors he had been profoundly impressed with a sense of his responsibility towards the numerous outcast children who were growing up around him in ignorance and crime. In 1695 he instituted his Waysenhause (Orphan House), supported by public charity. A single room was at first sufficient, but within a year it was found necessary to purchase a house, to which another was added in 1697. In 1698 there were 100 orphans under his charge to be clothed and fed, besides 500 children who were taught as day scholars. The schools grew in importance and were later known as the Franckesche Stiftungen. The education given was strictly religious. Hebrew was included, while the Greek and Latin classics were neglected; the Homilies of Macanus took the place of Thucydides. The same principle was consistently applied in his university teaching. Even as professor of Greek he had given great prominence in his lectures to the study of the Scriptures; but he found a much more congenial sphere when, in 1698, he was appointed to the chair of theology. Halle became a center from which Pietism became very widely diffused over Germany, and well beyond. His Waysenhause Orphans' School became famous for its printing presses and publishing program. This pretty little 1740 edition of DIE WAHRE HERTZENS-BUSSE is apparently unique. We find no copies of it recorded in the U.S. or in Europe. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! GER-GER1‎

‎Spangenberg, August Gottlieb; Moravian Declaration of Faith‎

‎IDEA FIDEI FRATRUM ODER KURZER BEGRIF DER CHRISTLICHEN LEHRE IN DEN EVANGELISCHEN BRUDERGEMEINEN.‎

‎pp. 592, (64). Small 8vo. 185 mm. One leaf has a lower corner torn out effecting 9 lines of text. The binding's clasps have worn the preliminary and end leaves, without loss of text. Early full leather binding; with remains of the original clasp mountings. Slight loss to top 1" of spine. Early pencil ownership of Abraham P. Moyers. August Gottlieb Spangenberg (1704-1792) was Count Zinzendorf's successor, and bishop of the Moravian Brethren. In 1728 Count Zinzendorf visited Jena, and Spangenberg made his acquaintance. In 1730 he visited the Moravian colony at Herrnhut. A "Collegium Pastorale Practicum" for the care of the sick and poor was in consequence founded by him at Jena, which the authorities at once broke up as a "Zinzendorfian institution." Later, his free lectures in Jena met with much acceptance, and led to an offer from Gotthilf Francke of the post of assistant professor of theology and superintendent of schools connected with his orphanage at Halle. He accepted the offer, and took up his duties in September 1732. But differences between the Pietists of Halle and himself soon became apparent. He found their religious life too formal, external and worldly, and they could not sanction his comparative indifference to doctrinal correctness and his incurable tendency to separatism in church life. After some false starts Spangenberg went to Herrnhut and found amongst the Moravians his life-work. He became its theologian, its apologist, its statesman and corrector, through sixty long years. For the first thirty years (1733-1762) his work was mainly devoted to the superintendence and organization of the extensive missionary enterprises of the body in Germany, England, Denmark, the Netherlands, Suriname, Georgia and elsewhere. During the second half of this missionary period of his life he superintended as bishop the churches of Pennsylvania. There he defended the Moravian colonies against the Indians, became their apologist against the attacks of the Lutherans and the Pietists, and did much to moderate the mystical extravagances of Count Zinzendorf. In 1777 Spangenberg was commissioned to draw up the Idea Fidei Fratrum, or "Compendium of the Christian Faith of the United Brethren" , which became the accepted declaration of the Moravian belief. As compared with Zinzendorf's own writings, this book exhibits the finer balance and greater moderation of Spangenberg's nature, while those offensive descriptions of the relation of the sinner to Christ in which the Moravians at first indulged are almost absent from it. - From Wiki. Bavaria, under Maximilian I (1598-1651), was a country of around 1 million inhabitants, with agriculture and salt production (a ducal monopoly) being the dominant sectors of the economy. It became a key player in the events leading up to the Thirty Years War. In 1608, Bavaria occupied and annexed the hitherto free Imperial and Lutheran city of Donauworth. The action caused the Protestant princes and cities to found the Protestant Union. Bavaria then concluded an alliance with the Austrian and Hungarian Estates. In 1609 Bavaria became the leading force in the newly founded (Catholic) Holy League, an alliance formed against the Protestant Union. Consolidating his governance, Duke Maximilian, in 1616 introduced a new Bavarian Landrecht (Law Code), which was a compilation, reworking, and summation of all the laws and codes. Includes the codes of: Judicial Procedure; Court Laws; State Laws; Police Law; Forestry, hunting, and fishing regulations; Etc. ‎Pufendorf, Samuel von.‎

‎SAMUELIS PUFENDORFI COMMENTARIORUM DE REBUS SUECICIS LIBRI XXVI. Ab Expeditione Gustavi Adolfi Regis In Germaniam ad abdicationem usque Christina. Editio altera mo. emendatior.‎

‎pp. (18), 1064, 24 (Index). Double column Latin text. Lacks the frontis portrait found in some copies. Wood engraved head and tail pieces, and initials. Light damp stain. Folio. 400 mm. Original full leather binding; joints and corners worn and cracked. Dedicated to Charles XI. Baron Samuel von Pufendorf (1632-1694), was a German jurist, political philosopher, economist, statesman, and historian. His commentaries and revisions of the theories of Thomas Hobbes and Hugo Grotius advanced the development of the theory of natural law and distinguished between the hegemony of church and state. Unlike Hobbes, he believed that it was the nature of human beings to live sociably in peace. In 1658 as Magister and, with the help of his brother Esaias, a diplomat in the Swedish service, became a tutor in the family of Petrus Julius Coyet, one of the resident ministers of King Charles X of Sweden, at Copenhagen. At this time, Charles Gustavus was endeavoring to impose an unwanted alliance on Denmark, and in the middle of the negotiations he opened hostilities. The anger of the Danes was turned against the envoys of the Swedish sovereign; Coyet succeeded in escaping, but the second minister, Sten Bielke, and the rest of the staff, including Pufendorf, were arrested and thrown into prison. During his eight months of captivity, Pufendorf occupied himself in meditating upon what he had read in the works of Hugo Grotius and Thomas Hobbes and mentally constructed a system of universal law. At the end of his captivity, he accompanied his pupils, the sons of Coyet, to the University of Leiden, where he was permitted to publish his reflections in 1661, under the title of Elementa jurisprudentiae universalis libri duo (Elements of Universal Jurisprudence). From 1677-1688 Pufendorf returned to Stockholm as Royal Historiographer, and produced several works, including this large and significant history, dedicated to Charles XI, which was first published in Utrecht in 1686. Arndt was always held in very high repute by the German Pietists (in Europe and America). The founder of Pietism, Philipp Jakob Spener, repeatedly called attention to him and his writings, and even went so far as to compare him with Plato. Attractive example of a rare proto-Pietist work. ‎ff. 360 (of 361) leaves. Lacks folio Fii (but with xerox facsimiles inserted). First signature detached, and somewhat browned. The title is printed in red and black, and has a central woodcut depicting Mount Parnassus, with the Muses, Bacchus and the temples of Delphi and Apollo. On the verso of the title page are the large woodcut arms of George, Duke of Saxony, showing a powerful knight in frontal view. This woodcut is dated 1514 in the banderole at the knight's head. The blank bottom 2.5" of the title have an old repair. Printed with wide margins in the text, and throughout there are marginal and interlinear Latin notes and comments in black ink by at least two sixteenth-century hands. (The manuscript notes here might reward better scholars than we are with interesting revelations). Folio. 330 mm. Highly decorated and tooled half alum tawed vellumized pig skin over oak boards binding. The spine covering is gone, revealing four double cord raised bands, and remains of an early manuscript used as binder's super. Clasps perished but the brass receivers on the front board are present. Johannes Beuschel was a German neo-latin poet and teacher at the Leipzig university. Probably born at Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the 1470's. From 1504 (and many years thereafter) he was a reader/professor of neo-Latin poetry. He probably died in Leipzig in 1522. Other names associated with him are: Erythropolitanus - Rotenburgensis; Johannes Tuberinus; Johannes Beusselius; Johannes Peussel or Pewschel; etc. He should not be confused with the anti-Jewish writer Johannes Matthias Tiberinus [ca. 1420-1500]. This is apparently an issue of one of the so-called lecture printings (Vortrag-Drucke). Used especially in Leipzig and Erfurt, they were issued in very small quantities for use in the university. Their wide margins were provided for just the sort of annotation seen in this example. They were apparently meant mainly for local sale. As a genre they are rather rare. Of this work we can locate no examples in the U.S. and only a few in Europe. Dedicated to George (the Bearded), Duke of Saxony (1471-1539), who became Duke of Saxony in 1500. He developed decided ability as a ruler. Among other actions, he took measures to suppress the robber-knights, and regulated the judicial system by defining and adjusting the jurisdiction of the various law courts. His court was better regulated than that of any other German prince, and he bestowed a paternal care on the University of Leipzig, where a number of reforms were introduced, and Humanism, as opposed to Scholasticism, was encouraged. The most significant era of his life unfolded after the time of this book, during Luther's Reformation. Most of his political measures, stood the test of experience, but in ecclesiastico-political matters he witnessed with sorrow the gradual decline of Catholicism and the spread of Lutheranism within his dominions, in spite of his earnest efforts and forcible prohibition of the new Protestant doctrine. ‎MANUSCRIPT ON THE HISTORY OF GERMANY, ETC IN ITALIAN.‎

‎REALATIONE DELLO STATO DELL' IMPERIO. e di tutti li Principi, Marchesi, e Conti della Germania dal 1621 per tutto lnno 1628.‎

‎248 leaves. Manuscript in Italian on the History of Germany, and virtually all of Europe, in the momentous era of the 1620's, prepared for Pope Urban VIII (Maffeo Barberini) by the Papal Nuncio to the Holy Roman Emperor. Written in a graceful Italian hand. Folio. 340 mm. Text generally clean, but with scattered mold stains. Remains of old vellum binding. Interesting colorful paste paper end sheets. With the bookplate of Elkin Mathews = Charles Elkin Mathews (1851-1921) London publisher, bookseller, and collector who played an important role in the literary life the English speaking world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also with a circular Sneyd family book plate [probably Ralph Sneyd (1793-1870), but perhaps earlier]. This work is often attributed to Carlo Carafa [an incompetent and criminal administrator who was executed for treason at Castel San Angelo on Mar 4, 1561 by Pius IV]. but it is certainly by a later Carlo Carafa, born in Naples in 1611, who was bishop of Aversa and Papal Nuncio to Switzerland, the Republic of Venice, and to the Holy Roman Emperor. The Holy Roman Emperor at this time was Ferdinand II (1578-1637), a member of the House of Habsburg. He was also King of Bohemia, and King of Hungary. His rule coincided with the Thirty Years' War. Ferdinand's aim, as a zealous Catholic, was to restore Catholicism as the only religion in the Empire and suppress Protestantism. The Neapolitan Carafa family produced a large number of bishops, cardinals, and some saints. Cardinals in the Carafa family include (with dates of their elevation to Cardinal): Filippo Carafa (1378); Oliviero Carafa (1467); Gianvincenzo Carafa (1527); Carlo Carafa (1555); Diomede Carafa (1555); Alfonso Carafa (1557); Antonio Carafa (1568); Decio Carafa (1611); Pier Luigi Carafa, seniore (1645); Carlo Carafa della Spina (1664); Fortunato Ilario Carafa della Spina (1686); Carafa di Belvedere (1764-1830); Francesco Carafa della Spina (1773); and Domenico Carafa della Spina (1844). Biographical and bibliographic confusion among them is rampant. UNIQUE. A wonderful item for further scholarly study. Chest 2/4‎
