‎UNTERSUCHUNGEN ÜBER DIE PESCHÎTTÂ: ZUR GESAMTEN HEBRÄISCHEN BIBEL ; ZUGLEICH EIN BEITRAG ZUR ERKENNTNIS DER ALTEN BIBELÜBERSETZUNGEN.‎

‎Berlin: M. Poppelauer, 1911. Wrappers; 8vo. 72 pages. In German. Teil I. No more published? Includes bibliographical references. Chaim Heller was a rabbinical and biblical scholar, "one of the very few modern scholars who combined a vast and deep talmudic erudition of the traditional type with a thorough competence in the methods of textual research. He defended the traditional masoretic text against the Bible critics. " (EJ) Of this work, speaking about those who criticize the reliability of traditional texts, Rabbi Nathan Lopes Cardozo says, "perhaps the most devastating blow to these critical theories was delivered by Rabbi Chaim Heller (1878-1960) . Not only had he mastered the Oral Torah to the extent that he was one of the greatest talmudic scholars of his time, but he also knew every extant ancient Bible translation in its original target language, whether Aramaic, Greek, Latin, or Syriac. In his Untersuchungen ueber die Peschitta (1911) , he took issue with those who concluded that apparent divergences from the Torah in their possession were due to variae lectiones in the ancient texts. Not so, he asserted. Every translation is a commentary, and the variations result from the translator preferring one explanation in the Oral Torah to another. Thus, the differences were exegetical rather than textual. He further showed that all the apparent differences stemmed from the thirty-two exegetical rules of biblical interpretation enumerated by Rabbi Elazar ben Rabbi Shimon. In the above-mentioned study he gives examples showing how the translator employed each rule in his version. " (Cardozo, Between Silence and Speech) . SUBJECT(S) : Bible. O. T. Syriac -- Versions -- Peshitta. Bible. O. T. -- Criticism, Textual. Ex-library. Bookplate of Peter Wiernik on inside front cover. Wiernik was an American Yiddish journalist, "editor for New York's most important Yiddish daily, the Jewish Morning Journal. ‎HEBRÄISCHES UND CHALDÄISCHES HANDWÖRTERBUCH ÜBER DAS ALTE TESTAMENT. ZWEYTER THEIL. VIERTE VERBESSERTE UND VERMEHRTE AUFLAGE.‎

‎Leipzig: F. C. W. Vogel, 1834. Cloth; 8vo. 921 pages. In German. Second part of a two-vol. Work. Gesenius was a Christian Hebraist and Orientalist who "exercised remarkable influence on the study of the Hebrew language and on the exegesis of the Old Testament, which he helped to place on a purely philological foundation. Besides publishing various works on Semitic languages (e. G. , "Versuch über die Maltesische Sprache, " 1810, on Maltese; "Paläographische Studien über Phönizische und Punische Schrift, " 1835; and "Scripturæ Linguæque Phœniciæ Monumenta, " 1837, on Punic and Phenician) , he devoted himself to Hebrew grammar and lexicography. His first lexicographical work was a "Handwörterbuch" in two volumes, 1810-12; a shorter edition appeared in 1814, which became the standard Hebrew dictionary, not alone for Germany, but also for the English-speaking world-the English editions by Robinson, Tregelles, and the Oxford improved edition by Briggs, Brown, and Driver being the main sources of Hebrew lexicography. ‎VON GHETTO ZU GHETTO: REISEN UND BEOBACHTUNGEN.‎

‎Stuttgart: Strecker & Schröder, 1909. Cloth; 8vo. Xiii, 213 pages. In German. Illustrated with photographs, many of them portraits of Jews showing a variety of costumes and surroundings. Originally published in 1905 in English under the title Jews in Many Lands; this is an authorized translation. Adler "was a lawyer by profession and had unusual opportunities to travel under favorable conditions and to build up a remarkable library. He was among the first persons to realize the importance of the Cairo Genizah. He visited Egypt in 1888 and 1895-96 and brought back approximately 25, 000 fragments from the Genizah. His library ultimately included about 4, 500 manuscripts of which he published a summary Catalogue of Hebrew Manuscripts in the Collection of E. N. Adler (1921) . He also had a collection of some 30, 000 printed books in Judaica and in general fields. In order to make good the embezzlements of a business associate he sold his library in 1923 to the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York and the duplicates of the printed books (including many incunabula) to the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, thus helping to raise both of these libraries to positions of significance. By an agreement made at that time, the manuscripts that he subsequently collected passed after his death to the Jewish Theological Seminary. Adler's published writings were mainly based on his travels and on materials in his own collection. " (EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Jewish diaspora. OCLC lists 16 copies worldwide. "He graduated in 1816, and took up the profession of teaching, refusing an offer of Jacobson, who wished him to become a preacher; for Jost believed that the task of modern Judaism lay not in any reform of the services, but rather in an improvement of education....Toward the end of his life he wrote ...Gesch. Des Judenthums und Seiner Sekten (3 vols. , Leipsic, 1857-59) , which deals with the whole of Jewish history down to 1858....His best work is in the presentation of modern Jewish history, in which he is singularly exact and conscientious, and to which he gives an exhaustive literature of sources; here he exhibits not only a fine discernment of what is historically important, but a spirit of fairness which is the more creditable because he wrote in the midst of the struggle for Reform. ‎DIE ETHIK DES JUDENTHUMS. [VOL I] ONLY.‎

‎Frankfurt: J. Kauffmann, 1898. Half leather; 8vo. Xxv, 469 pages. First edition. Marbled boards with gold lettering and rules to spine. In German. Bibliographical notes and index. Lazarus was a German philosopher and psychologist; Ethik des Judentums was his major work. In it, "Lazarus presents Jewish ethics as an 'objective-immanent' system. This system is based on an empirical, positivistic approach toward Jewish studies which holds that Jewish teachings on any subject must be derived from an analysis of Jewish sources. In selecting this approach, Lazarus departs from the 'constructive-speculative' philosophies of his 19th-century predecessors Solomon Formstecher and Samuel Hirsch, who brought a philosophic formalism to the analysis of the Jewish sources. Thus, philosophy, according to Lazarus, does not provide a preexistent scheme for Wissenschaft des Judentums ('Science of Judaism') , but is a methodological aid for discovering the objective unity of the "ethical cosmos, " as it appears throughout the Jewish literary tradition. Lazarus distinguishes between the subjective-formal approach to Jewish ethics, in which a philosophic formalism provides the starting point of investigation, and the objective-content one, in which the investigation begins with the sources themselves. He takes the latter approach as his own. He does this because in biblical and rabbinic literature, will, intent, and the Jewish way of life, rather than reflection and speculation, are the primary principles. (Franz Rosenzweig later based his existential philosophy on the same idea. ) Lazarus accepts this position for another reason: A Jewish ethical world view based on this conception possesses greater depth and clarity than one based on formal concepts and theoretical speculation. Lazarus emphasizes the religious character of obligation in Jewish ethics. God is the supreme, hidden principle on whom Judaism depends and who makes its whole legal structure necessary. Lazarus conceives of Jewish ethics in line with the autonomous ethics of Kant, holding that the absolute characteristic of Jewish ethics is expressed in immediate inner certainty, though he does not follow Kant completely. Such conceptualization was made possible by establishing an ethical norm as the highest source of the moral imperative, to which even God is subordinate. Lazarus was ambiguous with regard to the heteronomous character of Jewish ethics, and this ambiguity was the basis of attack against his system, both by those who accused him of inconsistency and by those who held that he had not done justice to the heteronomous character of Jewish ethics. In Lazarus' conception Jewish ethics is fundamentally social-universal. This position countered the particularist trends of Judaism and, in particular, of 19th-century Jewish theology. However, the fact of a universal aspect to Jewish ethics does not entail teaching and disseminating Jewish beliefs throughout the world. Rather, its existence reflects an attitude and a total way of life, based on the threefold conception God, the world, and mankind, that Jews should embrace. The central concept underlying this view of Jewish life is holiness. Holiness, according to Lazarus, is not numinous, nor transcendental, but a quality to be embodied in human life. It is defined as the 'ultimate goal of morality. '" (Moshe Schwarcz, EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Jewish ethics. Ethics. Bit of edgewear to spine. Henry O. ‎DIE ISRAELITISCHE RELIGIONSLEHRE. VOLUMES II & III [ONLY]‎

‎Leipzig: Baumgärtner, 1862. Cloth; 8vo. Vi, 270 pages. In German. Volumes II & III bound together and pages continuously. Series: Institut zur Förderung der israelitischen Literatur Schriften, 7 Jahr 1861-1862. Contents: 2. Abtheilung: Die Lehre von Gott. 3. Abtheilung: Die Gottesverehrung. Ludwig Philippson (1811-1889) "achieved renown as the founder (1837) of the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums and its editor until his death. Ludwig was an avid student of both Hebrew and classical literature. After graduation from Berlin University (1833) , he took up the position of preacher in the Magdeburg Jewish community. Though following the practice of Reform Judaism-he preached in German and introduced the organ and the rite of confirmation-he tried to steer a middle course between Reform and Orthodoxy. He was among the initiators of the Rabbinical Synods of Brunswick (1844) , Frankfort (1845) , and Breslau (1846) , but was critical of their decisions. One of his projects was the establishment of a modern institution for training scholars, rabbis, and teachers. Series: Veröffentlichungen der Alexander Kohut memorial foundation, bd. VII. A memorial volume prepared by a committee of friends; prefatory note signed by V. Aptowitzer and A. Z. Schwartz for the committee. Chajes was a rabbi, scholar, and author. "During his nine years of office in Vienna, the second largest community in Europe, Chajes was the undisputed spiritual leader of Austrian Jewry, though his Zionist views were unpopular with the wealthy and comfortable assimilationists, and his liberal scholarship as well as his Zionism antagonized most of the Orthodox. But his influence on the younger generation was considerable. In time he was recognized as one of the leading men in world Jewry. A fine orator and a charismatic personality, Chajes greatly impressed his audiences with his sermons and speeches beginning with his first address as chief rabbi of Vienna, in which he made his Zionist confession of faith. In his charitable activities he was much helped by his friendship with some American Jewish leaders, and he visited the United States twice. Chajes took a great interest in Jewish education, founding or reviving two Jewish elementary schools, a high school (which after his death was given his name) , the religious teachers' seminary, and in particular, a Hebrew paedagogium, of which he was director and where he taught Bible. He also served on the board of the Jewish Theological Seminary. " (Salo W. Baron, EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Hebrew literature. Chajes, Hirsch Perez, 1876-1927. OCLC lists 23 copies worldwide.
