Born in Ukk, Hungary, Krauss studied at Papa Yeshivah and at the Budapest rabbinical seminary and university. From 1894 to 1906 Krauss taught Bible and Hebrew at the Jewish teachers' seminary in Budapest. In 1906 he began to teach Bible, history, and liturgy at the Israelitische-Theologische Lehranstalt in Vienna. It was due to his efforts that the college did not succumb to financial difficulties after World War I. He traveled widely for his archaeological and historical research. Krauss was appointed head of the seminary in 1932 and rector in 1937. Krauss founded the Vienna Verein fuer juedische Geschichte und Literatur, and was active in many communal institutions. During the Kristallnacht in November 1938, the Nazis destroyed his valuable library and papers, and he fled to England, joining his daughter in Cambridge, where he remained until his death. Langer belonged to Masaryk's PftenEci (Friday Group) , the statesman's circle of closest friends, and was deeply influenced by Masaryk's humanistic philosophy. Other influences apparent in his writing are his Russian experiences and the human suffering with which he came into daily contact as an army doctor. Langer was a fine storyteller with a penetrating insight into human problems. He is, best known as the outstanding Czech playwright next to Capek. His best-known plays are the drama Periferie ("Outskirts, " 1925) and the comedy Velbloud uchem jehly (1923; The Camel Through the Needle's Eye, 1929) . [Avigdor Dagan in EJ].
