Title translates into English as Six German Sermons from the Synagogue in Dessau. In his essay Preacher, Teacher, Publicist: Joseph Wolf and the Ideology of Emancipation, Yale University Professor David Sorkin discusses the significance of this publication, suggesting that Wolf "retained his own characteristic version of the Dessau tradition of the conservative Haskalah but gave it a radical turn by altering its context rather than its content. The new context was the German-language media of the journal and the sermon. In 1805 Wolf began to give some of the first German-language sermons in the Dessau synagogue. These were the exception in Central Europe....Wolf's sermons followed the best Enlightenment Protestant models of the time in their elevated diction, sombre tone and clearly demarcated three- or four-part structure. Here the religious Enlightenment, or at least its forms, seemed to have penetrated to the very heart of Judaism, the synagogue....In 1806 Wolf also helped to found the first German-language journal to be published by Jews in Germany, Sulamith....clearly heir to the Haskalah....In the media of the sermon and the German-language journal, Wolf helped lay the foundations of a 'public sphere, ' the organs of communication in which a collective identity and cultural-political consciousness could be created for the emerging German-Jewish middle classes....Wolf gathered the best of his sermons into two volumes. When they appeared in 1821-1813, they were the first volumes of published German sermons written and delivered by a Jew. Wolf's sermons inaugurated a veritable flood of sermonic literature, which continued unabated into the twentieth century. As early as the 1830s some observers were declaring the German-language sermon to be the most important of the abundant innovations aimed at rehabilitating Judaism and the Jews. " (Sorkin, pp.119-122) . The significance of this change was not lost on the author, who titled this collection, Six GERMAN Sermons. A second volume was issued the next year, with the same title, and with an additional six sermons. Notably, these two volumes were the last publication of the great Haskalah publisher Moses Philippsohn, who was closely associated with Moses Mendelssohn. Extremely rare first edition of Abraham Joshua Heschels (1907-1972) dissertation on the Hebrew prophets, the work that became key to his close relationship with Martin Luther King, jr as Kings closest Jewish colleague. Martin Luther King, jr, and Heschel "initially bonded over the prophets. King was drawn to Heschels intimate knowledge of the topic (Heschels masterwork, in a body of masterworks, was his book The Prophets) , and Heschel in turn admired Kings devotion to the Exodus story of Moses and the Israelites, adapted to the narrative of the civil rights struggle in the 1950s and 60s....Heschel...can also be considered a kind of prophet himself. The main job of the prophets of the Bible, after all, is to hold their peoples feet to the fire. Moses railed at the weak and foolish Israelites who strayed from the path the minute their leader ascended to the mountaintop to commune with God. King fulminated against the war in Southeast Asia as well as against the injustices rampant in white American culture toward those whom it had enslaved for hundreds of years. Heschel supported both these causes, incurring the disapproval of some Jewish leaders when he did not hesitate to vigorously excoriate U. S. Involvement in Vietnam, preaching widely on the subject, writing letters to presidents, and being a spokesman for other religious leaders in meetings with high-level military strategists like Secretary of State Dean Rusk...Heschel, like King, had the charisma a prophet needs. He was impossible to dismiss, even when his message stung. The consummate gadfly, he shined a bright light on the ills of American society and also on those of American Judaism in the mid-20th century, which he saw as stultifying, airless, soulless, moribund. He was an outlier on one crisis we face today: how to make Judaism not only appealing but actually indispensable for Jews of future generations. His words were bracing and his exhortations powerful, but, rendered in such breathtakingly poetic language (as well as expressed verbally in his disarming Polish accent) , they seem like a loving gift from a benevolent elder, not a rebuke: He even warned warmly. He was a Jew who had suffered and seen too much suffering, and who, unlike the rest of us, was capable of vision on a greater scale, the prophetic scale. He knew what he was talking about, and, like King, he believed people could rise up, be their best selves, and behave with righteousness and even with holiness. Heschel died in 1972, four years after his friend King was shot dead. Its a long time ago now. The prophets we have today dont speak in Kings mellifluous rhetoric or write in Heschels enchanting prose. Maybe we have murdered or hounded to death those with the capacity to make our hearts soar with their words of justice and compassion; weve gotten pretty cynical, maybe too cynical for those kinds of voices" (Sian Gibby in Tablet Magazine, 2016) . Abraham Joshua Heschel (January 11, 1907 December 23, 1972) was a Polish-born American rabbi and one of the leading Jewish theologians and Jewish philosophers of the 20th century....In late October 1938, when Heschel was living in a rented room in the home of a Jewish family in Frankfurt, he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Poland. He spent ten months lecturing on Jewish philosophy and Torah at Warsaw's Institute for Jewish Studies. Six weeks before the German invasion of Poland, Heschel left Warsaw for London with the help of Julian Morgenstern, president of Hebrew Union College, who had been working to obtain visas for Jewish scholars in Europe....Heschel believed the teachings of the Hebrew prophets were a clarion call for social action in the United States and worked for African Americans' civil rights and against the Vietnam War. He also specifically criticized what he called pan-halakhism, or an exclusive focus upon religiously compatible behavior to the neglect of the non-legalistic dimension of rabbinic tradition. Heschel is a widely read Jewish theologian whose most influential works include Man Is Not Alone...At the Vatican Council II, as representative of American Jews, Heschel persuaded the Roman Catholic Church to eliminate or modify passages in its liturgy that demeaned the Jews, or referred to an expected conversion to Christianity. His theological works argued that religious experience is a fundamentally human impulse, not just a Jewish one. He believed that no religious community could claim a monopoly on religious truth. A. Lange, the well-known author of The History of Materialism, to become a privatdozent (lecturer) in philosophy at the University of Marburg. Appointed full professor after only three years, Cohen taught in Marburg until 1912. In April 1939, the synagogue was destroyed at the instigation of the Danzig authorities.. After the anti-Jewish riots of Kristallnacht of 9/10 November 1938 in Germany, similar riots took place on 12/13 November in Danzig. The Great Synagogue was taken over and demolished by the local authorities in 1939. Most Jews had already left the city, and the Jewish Community of Danzig decided to organize its own emigration in early 1939. (Wikipedia, 2017) This 1933 exhibition took place during the period at which Danzig was an semi-autonomous city-state known as The Free City of Danzig. This historical period in Danzigs history has been brought to life by Günter Grass Danzig Trilogy, including The Tin Drum. In 1933, the city's government was taken over by the local Nazi Party, which suppressed the democratic opposition. Due to anti-Semitic persecution and oppression, many Jews fled. After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the Nazis abolished the Free City and incorporated the area into the newly formed Reichsgau of Danzig-West Prussia. The Nazis classified the Poles and Jews living in the city as subhumans, subjecting them to discrimination, forced labor, and extermination. In 1908, Struck published Die Kunst des Radierens (The Art of Etching) , which became a seminal work on the subject. It was a textbook that offered both theory and practical instruction. In 1880 Siegmund Salfeld became a rabbi of the Jewish community in Mainz, in the then Archduchy of Hessen. The Salfeld family lived across the street from the archduke's palace, in the same building as the community's Hebrew school. It was in Mainz that Siegmund Salfeld wrote his most recognized work, Das Martyrologium des Nürnberger Memorbuches, which was published in 1898. This was a scholarly work that focused not only on the book referenced in the title, but also on the Jews of Nuremberg and Germany during the Middle Ages. Salfeld also taught at both the Hebrew school and the city Gymnasium, and was a member of the local school board. Theodor Reik (1888 - 1969) was a psychoanalyst who trained as one of Freud's first students in Vienna, Austria, and was a pioneer of lay analysis in the United States. During the First World War, Reik was mobilized and had to face up to the experience of unbearable helplessness found in trench-warfare. Out of that experience, Reik contributed to a paper of Freud, published in 1919, The Uncanny (referring, in part, to that which is horrifying) ; and some years later, in a text called "The Dread" written in 1924 and published in 1929. Reik makes a link between the various aspects of traumatic neurosis, as disseminated in the written papers of Freud, and suggests his own further analysis; Freud recognized the paper's pertinence. In a book, published in 1935, Reik discusses the dread of confronting thoughts, from the point of view of the psychoanalyst (Tréhel, G. 2012) . Once in the United States, Reik found himself rejected from the dominant community of medical psychoanalysts because he did not possess an M. D. Degree. In response, he went on to found one of the first psychoanalytic training centers for psychologists, the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, which remains one of the largest and best-known psychoanalytic training institutes in New York City. As part of Reik's conflict with the medical psychoanalysis community, he participated in the first lawsuit which helped define and legitimize the practice of psychoanalysis by non-physicians. His legacy for non-medical psychoanalysis in the US is accordingly important: that the training of non-medical analysts, such as psychologists and social workers, is now largely accepted, is significantly due to Reik's efforts. " Gotthold (1784-1862) was a German Jewish rabbi, politician, and bible translator. He was the first Jew to translate the complete Old Testament into High German, following in the footsteps of Moses Mendelssohn. He also preached at the Hamburg Temple. This speech addresses The Great fire of Hamburg, which began early on May 5, 1842, in Deichstrasse and burned until the morning of May 8, destroying about one third of the buildings in the Altstadt. It killed 51 people and destroyed 1, 700 residences and several important public buildings, necessitating major civic rebuilding and prompting infrastructure improvements. The heavy demand on insurance companies led to the establishment of reinsurance. The Neuen Israelitischen Tempel (aka, the Hamburg Temple) was the first permanent Reform synagogue and the first ever to have a Reform prayer rite.
