With a full front page Dreyfus illustration, in full color, titled "il dramma dreyfus - la fine del falsario, ” depicting an angel of death killing a man and blaming the incident on Dreyfus who sits shackled in jail. This issue of the Tribune was published in the same year as Emile Zola’s “J’accuse, ” and a year before Dreyfus was given a pardon. “‘The illustrated Tribune’ was an Italian weekly published in Rome… (it) was the weekly illustrated (magazine) preferred by Italians from the nineteenth century to the advent of television… (running from 1890 to 1969) . ” (Wikipedia, 2017) The back illustration of the periodical contains another full-page illustration of the death of John Hopkinson and his family on a mountain in the Alps. “John Hopkinson (1849 – 1898) was a British physicist… who invented the three-wire (three-phase) system for the distribution of electrical power…On 27 August 1898, Hopkinson and three of his six children, John Gustave, Alice and Lina Evelyn, were killed in a mountaineering accident on the Petite Dent de Veisivi, Val d'Herens, in the Pennine Alps, Switzerland. ” (Wikipedia, 2017) Other articles of note include an illustrated guide of late 19th century Italian women’s fashion, and a nice example of a mate-in-2 chess problem off of an Evans Gambit. It was in Mainz that Siegmund Salfeld wrote his most recognized work, Das Martyrologium des Nürnberger Memorbuches, which was published in 1898. This was a scholarly work that focused not only on the book referenced in the title, but also on the Jews of Nuremberg and Germany during the Middle Ages. Salfeld also taught at both the Hebrew school and the city Gymnasium, and was a member of the local school board. " Gotthold (1784-1862) was a German Jewish rabbi, politician, and bible translator. He was the first Jew to translate the complete Old Testament into High German, following in the footsteps of Moses Mendelssohn. He also preached at the Hamburg Temple. This speech addresses The Great fire of Hamburg, which began early on May 5, 1842, in Deichstrasse and burned until the morning of May 8, destroying about one third of the buildings in the Altstadt. It killed 51 people and destroyed 1, 700 residences and several important public buildings, necessitating major civic rebuilding and prompting infrastructure improvements. The heavy demand on insurance companies led to the establishment of reinsurance. The Neuen Israelitischen Tempel (aka, the Hamburg Temple) was the first permanent Reform synagogue and the first ever to have a Reform prayer rite. The creation and propagation of a critical text of the LXX/OG has been a basic concern in modern scholarship. The two great text editions begun in the early 20th century are the Cambridge Septuagint and the Gttingen Septuagint, each with a 'minor edition' (editio minor) and a 'major edition' (editio maior). For Cambridge this means respectively H.B. Swete, The Old Testament in Greek (1909-1922) and the so-called 'Larger Cambridge Septuagint' by A.E. Brooke, N. McLean, (and H. St. John Thackeray) (1906- ). For Gttingen it denotes respectively Alfred Rahlfs's Handausgabe (1935) and the 'Larger Gttingen Septuagint' (1931- ). Though Rahlfs (editio minor) can be called a semi-critical edition, the Gttingen Septuaginta (editio maior) presents a fully critical text, as described below. While both the Cambridge and Gttingen editions collect and organize textual evidence, they are based on different text-critical approaches. Whereas the Swete-Cambridge edition is 'diplomatic' (see below) the Rahlfs-Gttingen edition is expressly 'critical.' The difference between them did not, however, arise from any theoretical disagreement but, instead, from practical considerations. Whereas in the Cambridge view a critical edition of the LXX/OG was premature, Gttingen judged that its time had come. The Cambridge Septuagint project has since lapsed (1940), but the Gttingen editio maior continues. The central importance of critical editions in modern Septuagint Studies and their continued development is, therefore, not in doubt. Whereas a diplomatic edition uses as its base text a single, 'best' manuscript, to which other textual evidence is collated and organized into an apparatus, a critical text of the LXX/OG may be described as a collection of the oldest recoverable texts, carefully restored book by book (or section by section), aiming at achieving the closest approximation to the original translations (from Hebrew or Aramaic) or compositions (in Greek), systematically reconstructed from the widest array of relevant textual data (including controlled conjecture). The Gttingen Septuagint features two apparatuses (as does the Larger Cambridge Septuagint), the first for LXX/OG textual evidence proper and the second for so-called hexaplaric evidence, i.e. 'rival' translations/revisions of the translated LXX/OG (such as circulated under the labels 'Theodotion, ' 'Aquila, ' and 'Symmachus'), preserved largely through the influence of Origen's Hexapla. For LXX/OG research the importance of both apparatuses is second only to the critical text itself. Though in the nature of the case, the quest for each lost Greek original is without end, it is equally true that responsible research uses such critical texts as its starting point. Similarly, though the Greek original is not claimed to be superior to subsequent text-forms that have been generated (usually by revision of various sorts) in its transmission history, it nevertheless has logical as well as historical priority. Biography and some writings of Moses Mendelssohn (Moses of Dessau; 1729–1786) philosopher of the German Enlightenment in the pre-Kantian period, early Maskil, and a renowned Jewish figure in the 18th century. Born in Dessau, son of a Torah scribe, Mendelssohn received a traditional Jewish education under the influence of David Fraenkel, who was then rabbi of Dessau. When the latter was appointed rabbi of Berlin in 1743, Mendelssohn followed him there in order to pursue his religious studies and to acquire a general education. He earned his livelihood with difficulty while simultaneously studying Talmud diligently and acquiring a broad education in literature and philosophy. In addition to his fluent knowledge of German and Hebrew, he acquired knowledge of Latin, Greek, English, French, and Italian. His teachers were young, broadly educated Jews, such as the Galician immigrant Israel M. Zamosc, who taught him medieval Jewish philosophy, the medical student Abraham Kisch, who taught him Latin, and the well-born Berlin Jew, A.S. Gumpertz, who taught him French and English and in general served as a model of a pious Jew immersed in the larger intellectual world. During this period he met the writer and dramatist G.E. Lessing (1754) and a deep and lifelong friendship developed between them. In 1750 he became a teacher in the house of Isaac Bernhard, owner of a silk factory; in 1754, he was entrusted with the bookkeeping of the factory and eventually he became a partner in the enterprise. Throughout his life he worked as a merchant, while carrying out his literary activities and widespread correspondence in his free time. Only in 1763 was he granted the "right of residence" in Berlin by the king. In 1762, he married Fromet Guggenheim of Hamburg, and they had six children. In 1754 Mendelssohn began to publish – at first with the assistance of Lessing – philosophical writings and later also literary reviews. He also started a few literary projects (for example, the short-lived periodical Kohelet Musar) in order to enrich and change Jewish culture and took part in the early Haskalah. In 1763, he was awarded the first prize of the Prussian Royal Academy of Sciences for his work Abhandlung über die Evidenz in metaphysischen Wissenschaften ("Treatise on Evidence in Metaphysical Knowledge"). However, when the academy elected him as a member in 1771, King Frederick II refused to ratify its decision. In 1769, he became embroiled in a dispute on the Jewish religion, and from then on, he confined most of his literary activity to the sphere of Judaism. His most notable and enduring works in this area included the translation into German and commentary on the Pentateuch, Sefer Netivot ha-Shalom ("Book of the Paths of Peace," 1780–83) and his Jerusalem: oder, Ueber religiöse Macht und Judenthum ("Jerusalem, or On Religious Power and Judaism," 1783), the first polemical defense of Judaism in the German language and one of the pioneering works of modern Jewish philosophy. An active intermediary on behalf of his own people in difficult times and a participant in their struggle for equal rights, he was at the same time a forceful defender of the Enlightenment against the opposition to it which gained strength toward the end of his life. Joseph Budko (1888-1940) , was a "painter and graphic artist. Budko, who was born in Plonsk, received a traditional Jewish education. In 1902 he went to study at the art school in Vilna. In 1910 Budko moved to Berlin where he learned metal-chasing and also studied at the Museum of Arts and Crafts. In Berlin Budko met Hermann Struck who taught him the technique of etching. Eventually he also took up woodcutting, lithography, and painting. In 1933 Budko settled in Palestine. In 1935 he became the director of the reopened New Bezalel school of arts and crafts. Budko stressed the teaching of graphic design and utilized the ornamental value of the Hebrew letters. Budko's subject matter was determined by the Jewish environment in which he grew up and to which he returned in Jerusalem. Budko developed a style that combined the personal with the Jewish, being a synthesis of Jewish tradition and modern art. He also revived the spirit of Jewish book illustration, adapting it to modern design. Among the books he illustrated are the Haggadah, and he designed many bookplates. " (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) .
