He fled to Holland in 1939 but was interned in Westerbork by the Nazis in 1943 and sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1944 where he perished. Among Duckesz’ published works are Ivah le-Moshav, the first volume of which contains biographies and tombstone inscriptions of the rabbis who served in the three communities, with annotations by S. Title translates into English as “Six German Sermons from the Synagogue in Dessau. ” Both volumes have the same title, and each contain six different sermons. In his essay “Preacher, Teacher, Publicist: Joseph Wolf and the Ideology of Emancipation, ” Yale University Professor David Sorkin discusses the significance of this publication, suggesting that Wolf "retained his own characteristic version of the Dessau tradition of the conservative Haskalah but gave it a radical turn by altering its context rather than its content. The new context was the German-language media of the journal and the sermon. In 1805 Wolf began to give some of the first German-language sermons in the Dessau synagogue. These were the exception in Central Europe....Wolf's sermons followed the best Enlightenment Protestant models of the time in their elevated diction, sombre tone and clearly demarcated three- or four-part structure. Here the religious Enlightenment, or at least its forms, seemed to have penetrated to the very heart of Judaism, the synagogue....In 1806 Wolf also helped to found the first German-language journal to be published by Jews in Germany, Sulamith....clearly heir to the Haskalah....In the media of the sermon and the German-language journal, Wolf helped lay the foundations of a 'public sphere, ' the organs of communication in which a collective identity and cultural-political consciousness could be created for the emerging German-Jewish middle classes....Wolf gathered the best of his sermons into two volumes. When they appeared in 1821-1813, they were the first volumes of published German sermons written and delivered by a Jew. This is a nice copy of the Alabama edition, the rarest of the three. “Alexander Altmann (1906 – 1987) was an Orthodox Jewish scholar and rabbi born in Kassa, Austria-Hungary (present-day Košice, Slovakia) . He emigrated to England in 1938 and later settled in the United States, working productively for a decade and a half as a professor within the Philosophy Department at Brandeis University. He is best known for his studies of the thought of Moses Mendelssohn, and was indeed the leading Mendelssohn scholar since the time of Mendelssohn himself. He also made important contributions to the study of Jewish mysticism, and for a large part of his career he was the only scholar in the United States working on this subject in a purely academic setting. ‎1st Edition. Framed and Matted 9 1/2 X 12 inch etching on paper by Hermann Struck of a Jew reading Torah, signed by Struck in the lower margin. Not dated, but probably from early 20th century (1900-1910) . “Hermann Struck (1876 1944) was a German Jewish artist known for his etchings… Hermann Struck (Chaim Aaron ben David) was born in Berlin. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. In 1904, he joined the modern art movement known as the Berlin Secession. In 1900, Struck met Jozef Israëls, a Dutch artist, who became his mentor. Both were recognized as leading artists of their time. In 1908, Struck published ‘Die Kunst des Radierens’ (‘The Art of Etching’) , which became a seminal work on the subject. It was a textbook that offered both theory and practical instruction. Struck's students included Marc Chagall, Lovis Corinth, Jacob Steinhardt, Lesser Ury and Max Liebermann… In 1899, upon completing his studies at the Berlin Academy, he was banned from teaching there because he was Jewish….
