' A short, detailed compilation of historical sources concerning Hannukah, written by the German-Jewish pedagogue Eliezer L. Ehrmann; the Judische Lesehefte of Schocken Verlag published a number of his short pedagogical treatises on Pesach, Schavuot, and Chanukka; these were issued in conjunction with Ehrmann's work with and publications by the Reich Association of Jews in Germany, from 1936-1938. Ehrmann was able to get out of Germany, and worked as a Hebrew teacher at the College of Jewish Studies and was on the board of the Board of Jewish Education of Chicago. A recent compilation of all of Ehrmann's texts on German-Jewish Religious education published in the mid 1930's was recently issued as 'Von Trauer zur Freude: Leitfäden und Texte zu den jüdischen Festen'. .According to the Austrian census of 1910 the town had 18,568 inhabitants. The census asked people for their native language: 15,144 (84.3%) were German-speaking, 2,568 (14.3%) were Polish-speaking and 136 (0.7%) were Czech-speaking. Jews were not allowed to declare Yiddish, and most of them thus declared German as their native language. The most populous religious groups were Roman Catholics with 10,378 (55.9%), followed by Protestants with 4,955 (26.7%) and the Jews with 3,024 (16.3%).The vast majority of the Jews were exterminated by Nazis during World War II, and the German population was expelled by the Soviets after the war under the terms demanded by Stalin at the Potsdam Conference (Wikipedia). There he published articles which appeared in most of the worlds Hebrew language newspapers as well as in other sectors of the Jewish press. From 1918 to his death, Chajes served as the chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Vienna. Jacob Samuel Zuri-Szezak (18841943) , lawyer, authority on Hebrew law, and author. Zuri, who was born in Poland, studied in France and Germany. After immigrating to Palestine after World War I, he lectured for a time at the Jerusalem Law School. In 1927 he moved to Paris and in 1931 to London. Zuri's single scholarly purpose was to introduce into the European study of Greek, Roman, and Islamic law the data of the Jewish legal tradition. He published most of his 31 works in Hebrew, because, as a Zionist, he hoped to lay the foundation for a system of legislation for the coming Jewish state. In his biographical studies and in his analysis of Jewish jurisprudence, Zuri distinguishes between two main currents in rabbinical methodology, the southern, characteristic of Judean scholars, and the northern, of Galilean scholars. These recur in Babylonian Sura and Nehardea-Pumbedita, respectively. Southern methodology seeks for the underlying unity of surface differences. In mishnaic study, a southerner will relate the view of an anonymous Mishnah to the total view held by a tannaitic authority or to an abstract legal principle. Northern methodology concentrates on concrete characteristics of cases and looks for fine individual differences. In mishnaic controversy, the northerner looks for an explanation of difference in the differing circumstances of specific cases. After graduating from the Breslau seminary and from the University of Halle
he was engaged as private teacher by Baron Horace Günzburg at Paris. During a residence of two years in that city Gross collected in the Bibliothèque Nationale the material for his work Gallia Judaica. In 1869 he went to Berlin, where he associated much with Leopold Zunz, whose methods of research he admired and adopted. In 1870 he was called to the rabbinate of Gross-Strelitz, Silesia. From 1875 he was rabbi of Augsburg. Gross's activity in the domain of literary history, especially of that of the French Jews of the Middle Ages, was extensive. In his essay Preacher, Teacher, Publicist: Joseph Wolf and the Ideology of Emancipation, Yale University Professor David Sorkin discusses the significance of this publication, suggesting that Wolf "retained his own characteristic version of the Dessau tradition of the conservative Haskalah but gave it a radical turn by altering its context rather than its content. The new context was the German-language media of the journal and the sermon. In 1805 Wolf began to give some of the first German-language sermons in the Dessau synagogue. These were the exception in Central Europe....Wolf's sermons followed the best Enlightenment Protestant models of the time in their elevated diction, sombre tone and clearly demarcated three- or four-part structure. Here the religious Enlightenment, or at least its forms, seemed to have penetrated to the very heart of Judaism, the synagogue....In 1806 Wolf also helped to found the first German-language journal to be published by Jews in Germany, Sulamith....clearly heir to the Haskalah....In the media of the sermon and the German-language journal, Wolf helped lay the foundations of a 'public sphere, ' the organs of communication in which a collective identity and cultural-political consciousness could be created for the emerging German-Jewish middle classes....Wolf gathered the best of his sermons into two volumes. When they appeared in 1821-1813, they were the first volumes of published German sermons written and delivered by a Jew. Wolf's sermons inaugurated a veritable flood of sermonic literature, which continued unabated into the twentieth century. As early as the 1830s some observers were declaring the German-language sermon to be the most important of the abundant innovations aimed at rehabilitating Judaism and the Jews. " (Sorkin, pp.119-122) . The significance of this change was not lost on the author, who titled this collection, Six GERMAN Sermons. Notably, it was also the last publication of the great Haskalah publisher Moses Philippsohn, who was closely associated with Moses Mendelssohn. This is a nice copy of the Alabama edition, the rarest of the three. Alexander Altmann (1906 1987) was an Orthodox Jewish scholar and rabbi born in Kassa, Austria-Hungary (present-day Koice, Slovakia) . He emigrated to England in 1938 and later settled in the United States, working productively for a decade and a half as a professor within the Philosophy Department at Brandeis University. He is best known for his studies of the thought of Moses Mendelssohn, and was indeed the leading Mendelssohn scholar since the time of Mendelssohn himself. He also made important contributions to the study of Jewish mysticism, and for a large part of his career he was the only scholar in the United States working on this subject in a purely academic setting. Among the many Brandeis students whose work he supervised in this area were Elliot Wolfson, Arthur Green, Heidi Ravven, Lawrence Fine, and Daniel Matt.
