Ehrlich was a Polish-born Bibical exegete who lived in worked in Germany and then the United States. His Randglossen zur hebraeischen Bibel (7 vols. , 1908-14) is a German commentary on the Bible, which like his Hebrew one consists of notes on the Bible. "Ehrlich included part of the material from his Hebrew commentary, but in an expanded form, as well as new interpretations arrived at since its publication; many of his earlier opinions are changed here. Only rarely does he comment on aspects dealt with by the 'higher criticism. ' He concentrates on textual criticism and reconstructions, and his very numerous emendations (especially in his German commentary) are at times conjectural (such as: haplography or dittography, letters having a similar appearance in the ancient or in the square script, the use of abbreviations, glosses, etc. ) , and in most cases are not even based on ancient translations. His comments, which are distinguished by their originality, at times have the quality of homiletics and are derived from Ehrlich's innovating spirit; yet through his sound linguistic instinct and fine linguistic differentiations he succeeded in illuminating and explaining, with great acumen and profundity, many verses and linguistic usages. While he did study law in Vienna, most of his early intellectual work concentrated on literature and journalism. He was launched into Zionism in 1896, motivated by the Dreyfus case, and fueled by the translation into English of his Judenstaat. The next year he planned the first Zionist Congress, and was elected it's president; at following Congresses, he was continually reelected. Heads of state throughout Europe conferred with Herzl in his position as leader of the Zionists. Dor Dor ye-Dorshay, a five volume work, is a history of Jewish oral law from Biblical times to the fifteenth century, when the Jews were expelled from Spain. While most Talmud scholars immediately adopted the work as their standard history, there was som emalcontents, in particular Isaac Halevy and Eleazer Zarkes. Mithelfen wollen wir, und das ist unser großes Ideal, eine einheitliche jüdische Kulturatmosphäre zu schaffen.Die "Menorah" dient keiner Partei, sie will zu Juden jeder Richtung sprechen, soweit sie Fragen der Politik behandelt nur referieren und in versöhnlichem Sinne berichten, durch Wort und Bild belehren, erziehen und auch in gutem Sinne unterhalten. Sie will den Blick der Leser auf die alten künstlerischen Überlieferungen im jüdischen Schaffen lenken, die zu Unrecht nur bei den wenigsten Beachtung finden, von neuen jüdischen Künstlern vermelden und ein übersichtliches Bild des zeitgenössischen literarischen Schaffens bieten. Sie wird keine politische, sondern Kulturpropaganda treiben.Diese Zeitschrift ist der jüdischen Familie gewidmet, die stets Bollwerk und Rückhalt des Judentums war. Sie will auch den Interessen der jüdischen Frauen entgegenkommen und sie an ihre Aufgaben gemahnen, die in der Tat bedeutende sind. Among the Spanish and Portuguese community that his family was a part of, Spinoza attracted attention for his irreligious and heretical ideas, such as questioning whether Adam was the first man. On July 27, 1656, he was excommunicated. His 1670 Tractatus Theologico-Politicus caused a sensation, and was banned everywhere, and sold with false title pages. Three years later, he was offered the chair of philosophy at Heidelberg, which he declined, avowing a preference for a quiet life. Efforts to have his Ethics published were unfruitful, due to theological impediments. It was later published, after his death, in Opera Posthuma. In 1925 he became a professor at the then-new Hebrew University. He formulated the basis for a new approach to talmudic studies in which he trained generations of scholars. Early in his career Epstein devoted studies to books of the Bible and the Elephantine papyri, but the major portion of his life's work was dedicated to rabbinical literature, particularly to the Mishnah text. In the field of geonic literature, Epstein edited the geonic commentary to the sixth order of the Mishnah , the introduction to which had studies on the she'iltot of R. Aha Gaon. His contribution to the modern study of rabbinical literature was of far-reaching importance. Epstein's essays and reviews appeared in many learned periodicals, and he was cofounder and coeditor of the quarterly Devir (192324) , and edited the first 23 volumes of the quarterly Tarbiz (193052) . One of the outstanding representatives of the Enlightenment in Germany, Lessing was devoted to the principle of toleration. Through a physician, Aaron Solomon Gumpertz, he became a friend and admirer of Moses Mendelssohn, whom he encouraged to publish his first philosophical work. Mendelssohn was the inspiration for Lessing's Nathan der Weise, his last play, and once more a plea for toleration. Based on the parable of the three rings, adapted from Boccaccio's Decameron, the play presents Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as three sons of a benevolent father who has given each an identical ring, although each one claims that his ring alone is authentic. Nathan is made the spokesman for the aspirations of the Enlightenment: tolerance, brotherhood, and love of humanity. (Graetz, EJ) Ex library.
