In 1820 Sulzer was appointed cantor at Hohenems, where he modernized the ritual, and introduced a choir. At the instance of Rabbi Isaac Noah Mannheimer of Vienna he was called to the Austrian capital as chief cantor in 1826. There he reorganized the song service of the synagogue, retaining the traditional chants and melodies, but harmonizing them in accordance with modern views
His responses are tuneful, and though more melodious than the choral chant of the Catholic Church, show a strong resemblance to it. In all his compositions strict attention is paid to the Hebrew text; and a scrupulous adherence to syntactic construction is observed throughout. The collection Zwanzig Gesänge für den Israelitischen Gottesdienst (Vienna, 1892) was printed posthumously. In his Denkschrift an die Wiener Cultusgemeinde he sums up his ideas on the profession of cantor. Sulzer, who was widely famed as a singer and as an interpreter of Schubert, was a professor at the imperial conservatorium of Vienna, a knight of the Order of Francis Joseph I and a maestro of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Important period work on the Reform Movement by one of its key leaders. Sigismund Stern (18121867) was a German teacher and leader of the Berlin Reform movement. After studying philology in Berlin, in 1835 Stern succeeded I. M. Jost as headmaster of the Berlin Jewish boys' school. In 1845 he gave a series of lectures on the tasks of Judaism which aroused wide interest and controversy. He wished to bring about a revival of religious life, waking it from its then current lethargy, which he felt was caused by the contradictions and frustrations faced by Jews in the modern world. Following his proposal calling for the erection of a German-Jewish church, leading classes of Berlin Jewry responded by forming an Association for Reform in Judaism, in which Stern played a central role. Contending that Judaism must free itself from its national heritage, he initiated radical reforms and the separate organization of the reformers in Berlin. In 1848, after standing unsuccessfully as candidate for that year's National Assembly, Stern accepted the directorship of the Frankfurt on the Main Philanthropin Jewish school. He enlarged the institution, raised its academic standards, and introduced pedagogic (but not religious) innovations, which made him an acknowledged leader of the German methods (EJ, 2007) . Feb. 26, 1903, he was elected to the presidency of Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati. From the time of his arrival in America, Kohler actively espoused the cause of Reform Judaism; he was one of the youngest members of the Philadelphia Jewish Rabbinical Conference of 1869, and in 1885 he convened the Pittsburgh Rabbinical Conference, which adopted the so-called Pittsburgh Platform, on which Reform Judaism in America stands. Each of these modes elicited a distinct psycho-emotional response. The Dorian Mode was used for texts of an elevated and inspired nature; the Phrygian for sentimental texts, with their very human outbreaks of feeling, both of joy and grief; and the Lydian was used in composing music for the texts of lamenting and confessions of sins. Idelsohn further categorized and defined these motives as ones that either prepared a musical phrase, began it, or concluded it. His works include the monumental Thesaurus of Hebrew Oriental Melodies (10 volumes, 19141932) and Jewish Music (1929) . Sefer Sha'shu'im by Joseph ben Meir Ibn Zabara: With Changes, Notes, and An Added Introduction by Israel Davidson." Ibn Zabara (b. About 1140 in Barcelona) was a physician and Hebrew writer. He was a contemporary of some of the Tibbon family, of Maimonides and of Judah Al-Harizi; Joseph Kimhi praised his scientific knowledge in his Commentary to Proverbs. Like his father, he studied medicine and lived as an honored physician in his native town. Ibn Zabara became known through his Sefer Sha'ashu'im ('Book of Amusements') , one of the best maqamat written. This book is a literary account of his journey to several countries (southern Spain and Provence) with a physician named Joseph (nicknamed 'Einan ha-Shed' in the book) who came from afar and joined Ibn Zabara on the journey. Consisting of a collection of stories and proverbs within the framework of a background story, the intention of Sefer Sha'ashu'im, as the title indicates, is to amuse the reader. As it is usual in the genre, some secular poems are included before and within the prose sections. In this work, Ibn Zabara reveals a considerable knowledge of Arabic literature the source of most of his proverbs and pithy sayings and also of the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmuds. More than any other work of this type, Sefer Sha'ashu'im shows Greek, Indian, and Arabic influence. Apart from its literary value, this book contains valuable information on medicine and hygiene, natural science, psychology, and physiognomy. The book includes the earliest example of questions and answers on scientific topics in Hebrew rhymed prose.
The book was first printed in Constantinople (1577) by R. Isaac Akrish, together with other works. In 1865 it was published serially in Ha-Levanon. A scientific edition was prepared by I. Davidson (first with an introduction in English, 1914, and then with a Hebrew translation of the introduction, 1925) .
Apart from Sefer Sha'ashu'im Ibn Zabara wrote 'Battei ha-Nefesh, ' a didactic poem of 126 verses on anatomy and the functions of the organs in the human body, and a short treatise in prose for physicians. - EJ 2008. Title translates to Annual Report of the Jewish Theological Seminary (Fraenckelsche Stiftung) . A nearly complete run of the journal including the editions printed from 1866-1869, 1872-1875, 1877-1922, and 1924-1938 (only missing 14 out of 82) . Some volumes bound separately in a limited run and some include duplicates. The Judisch-Theologischen Seminars, Breslau was the first modern rabbinical seminary in Central Europe. Founded in 1854 with the funds which Jonas Fraenkel, a prominent Breslau businessman, had willed for the purpose, the seminary became the model for similar colleges set up in Europe and the U. S
. The seminarys basic aim was to teach positive historical Judaism. The positive stood for a faithful adherence to the practical precepts of Judaism, while historical permitted free inquiry into the Jewish past, including even Bible criticism, though with some self-imposed limitations (JewishVirtualLibrary.org, 2016) . Every year, the seminary published an annual report with scholarly work by the professors at the seminary, up until the Nazis destroyed the seminary in 1938.
