‎[Mining History in Eastern Germany] - Agricola, Georg‎

‎Vom Bergkwerck - XII Bücher darinn alle Empter Instrument Bezeuge unnd alles zu disem Handel gehoerig mitt schoenen Figuren vorbildet und klaerlich beschriben seindt . Mit begleitendem Text von Wilhelm Treue am Ende des Buchs.‎

‎1985. Reprint of the 1557 edition Basel. Essen Verlag Glueckauf 1985. Folio. 491 pages plus 8 pages of an explanatory text. Original Hardcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. From the library of the Viessmann - family in Hofeck with their beautiful library - stamp to the endpaper. Georgius Agricola born Georg Bauer; 24 March 1494 – 21 November 1555 was a German Humanist scholar mineralogist and metallurgist. Born in the small town of Glauchau in the Electorate of Saxony of the Holy Roman Empire he was broadly educated but took a particular interest in the mining and refining of metals. He was the first to drop the Arabic definite article al- exclusively writing chymia and chymista in describing activity that we today would characterize as chemical or alchemical giving chemistry its modern name. For his groundbreaking work De Natura Fossilium published in 1546 he is generally referred to as the father of mineralogy and the founder of geology as a scientific discipline. He is well known for his pioneering work De re metallica libri XII that was published in 1556 one year after his death. This 12-volume work is a comprehensive and systematic study classification and methodical guide on all available factual and practical aspects that are of concern for mining the mining sciences and metallurgy investigated and researched in its natural environment by means of direct observation. Unrivalled in its complexity and accuracy it served as the standard reference work for two centuries. Agricola stated in the preface that he will exclude "all those things which I have not myself seen or have not read or heard of". He continued "That which I have neither seen nor carefully considered after reading or hearing of I have not written about." As a scholar of the Renaissance he was committed to a universal approach towards learning and research. He published over 40 complete scholarly works during his professional life on a wide range of subjects and disciplines such as pedagogy medicine metrology mercantilism pharmacy philosophy geology history and many more. His innovative and comprehensive scholarly work based on new and precise methods of production and control has made his work a central part of scholarship and understanding of science during that period. ‎[The foremost Park-Designer of 19th century Germany] - [Puckler-Muskau, Furst] Kalwa, Robert (Redaktion)‎

‎Fürst Pückler als Gartenkünstler und Mensch. German edition of a book on Count Pückler-Muskau as Garden Design Artist his time in Ireland and Britain etc.‎

‎1928. Cottbus Verlag Albert Heine 1928. 295 cm x 215 cm. 212 Seiten mit zahlreichen Farb- und Schwarzweißabbildungen / 212 pages with numerous Illustrations. Original Hardcover. Sehr guter Zustand mit nur geringen Gebrauchsspuren. Selten in diesem guten Zustand ! Prince Hermann Ludwig Heinrich von Pückler-Muskau; born as Count Pückler from 1822 Prince; 30 October 1785 – 4 February 1871 was a German nobleman renowned as an accomplished artist in landscape gardening as well as the author of a number of books mainly centering around his travels in Europe and Northern Africa published under the pen name of "Semilasso". Pückler-Muskau was the first of five children of Count Carl Ludwig Hans Erdmann Pückler and the Countess Clementine of Callenberg who gave birth to him at age 15. He was born at Muskau Castle now Bad Muskau in Upper Lusatia then ruled by the Electorate of Saxony. He served for some time in the Saxon "Garde du Corps" cavalry regiment at Dresden and afterwards traveled through France and Italy often by foot. In 1811 after the death of his father he inherited the Standesherrschaft barony of Muskau. Joining the war of liberation against Napoleon I of France he left Muskau under the General Inspectorate of his friend the writer and composer Leopold Schefer. As an officer under the Duke of Saxe-Weimar he distinguished himself in the field. Later he was made military and civil governor of Bruges. After the war he retired from the army and toured Great Britain for a year moving with ease in aristocratic circles. He attended plays at His Majesty's Theatre Haymarket and Drury Lane admiring performances of Eliza O'Neill studied parkland landscaping and in Wales visited the Ladies of Llangollen in 1828. In 1822 in compensation for certain privileges which he resigned he was raised to the rank of "Fürst"1 by King Frederick William III of Prussia. In 1817 he had married the Dowager Countess Lucie von Pappenheim née von Hardenberg daughter of Prussian statesman Prince Karl August von Hardenberg; the marriage was legally dissolved after nine years in 1826 though they did not separate and remained on amicable terms. Mahbuba ca. 1840 He returned to England in 1828 where he became something of a celebrity in London society spending nearly two years in search of a wealthy second wife capable of funding his ambitious gardening schemes. In 1828 his tours took him to Ireland notably to the seat of Daniel O'Connell in Kerry. On his return home he published a not entirely frank account of his time in England. The book was an enormous success in Germany and also caused a great stir when it appeared in English as Tour of a German Prince 1831–32. Pueckler's name carved in the Great Enclosure of Musawwarat Being a daring character he subsequently traveled in Algeria Tunisia Egypt and Sudan and explored ancient Nubia. He is documented as having visiting the site of Naqa in modern-day Sudan in 1837. He also visited the nearby site of Musawwarat es-Sufra and in both places he carved his name in the stone of the temples. In the same year at the slave market of Cairo he purchased an Ethiopian Oromo girl in her early teens whom he named Mahbuba "the beloved". He took her to Asia Minor Greece and Vienna where he introduced her to European high society but Mahbuba developed tuberculosis and died in Muskau in 1840. Later he would write that she was "the being I loved most of all the world." He then lived at Berlin and Muskau where he spent much time in cultivating and improving the still existing Muskau Park. In 1845 he sold this estate and although he afterwards lived from time to time at various places in Germany and Italy his principal residence became Schloss Branitz near Cottbus where he laid out another splendid park. Politically he was a liberal supporting the Prussian reforms of Freiherr vom Stein. This together with his pantheism and his colourful lifestyle made him slightly suspect in the society of the Biedermeier period. In 1863 he was made a hereditary member of the Prussian House of Lords and in 1866 he attended — by then an octogenarian — the Prussian general staff in the Austro-Prussian War. He was decorated for his 'actions' at the Battle of Königgratz even though the then 80-year old Prince had slept throughout the day. In 1871 he died at Branitz. Since human cremation was illegal at that time for religious reasons he resorted to an ingenious evasion of traditional burial; he left instructions that his heart be dissolved in sulphuric acid and that his body should be embedded in caustic soda caustic potash and caustic lime. Thus on February 9 1871 his denatured remains were buried in the Tumulus - an earth pyramid surrounded by a parkland lake at Branitzer Castle. Dying childless the castle and estate passed to the heir to the Princely title his nephew Heinrich von Pueckler with money and the inventory to his niece Marie von Pachelbl-Gehag née von Seydewitz. The literary estate of the Prince was inherited by writer Ludmilla Assing who wrote his biography and posthumously published correspondence and diaries unpublished during his lifetime. Jahrhundert in Europa. The strategically and commercially important great port cities of Hamburg Kiel and Lubeck are all shown on the map. Blaeu set up his mapmaking and publishing business in Amsterdam where he sold instruments and globes published maps and edited the works of intellectuals like Descartes and Hugo Grotius. In 1633 he was appointed map-maker of the Dutch East India Company. In 1635 he released his atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas novus. Willem died in 1638. He had two sons Cornelis 1610-1648 and Johannes 1596-1673. Joan trained as a lawyer but joined his father's business rather than practice. ‎1851. London Edinburgh & Dublin J & F. Tallis 1851. Original steel engraving / Vintage map. Drawn and engraved by John Rapkin. Partly hand-coloured. Illustrations by N. Whitlock and Engraved by J. Rogers. Plate Size: 25 cm x 34.8 cm. Sheet Size: 27.5 cm x 37.4 cm. Vintage 19th century map in very good condition. Published in the Illustrated Atlas And Modern History Of The World Geographical Political Commercial & Statistical Edited By R. Montgomery Martin. Beautiful and fascinating map of a fragmented Germany from the Victorian Era. The coloured delineation show the patchwork of kingdoms duchies states and 'Kleinstaaterei' or mini-/micro-states that comprised much of the territory of the ancient and recently expired Holy Roman Empire. The Kingdom of Bavaria is the largest of these with Saxony and Hanover also significant local powers. The non-contiguous Coburg a tiny state exerts outsized influence due to its ties with the British Royal family: reigned Queen Victoria was the daughter of a Coburg princess. Miniature Oldenburg Hesse Biankenburg and Gottingen vie with each other in this crowded field of states. Prussia also has outposts in this busy area around which are Holland Prussia France Switzerland Tyrol Bohemia and the already-mentioned Prussia. The railway system is shown as are the numerous towns and cities of the region. Relief is depicted with hachuring. A doubled-head eagle accompanies the titular cartouche and a decorative border is adorned with armorial coat-of-arms and ceremonial medals - suggestive of the necessary pomp-and ceremony of such a thronged political and diplomatic landscape. John Tallis 7 November 1817 – 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. His company John Tallis and Company published views maps and atlases in London from roughly 1838 to 1851. Tallis set up as a publisher with Frederick Tallis in Cripplegate in 1842; the business moved to Smithfield in 1846 and was dissolved in 1849. From 1851 to 1854 Tallis operated as John Tallis and Company. He started The illustrated news of the world and national portrait gallery of eminent personages in 1858 selling it for £1370 in 1861; it folded in 1863. Wikipedia The most important project John Tallis undertook was the 'Illustrated Atlas' from 1851. The original map we offer here was part of this exceptional Atlas and all the maps it contained are still today considered as the last reminder of an era of lavish map production. Tallis worked the project together with John Rapkin 1815-1876 and it was Rapkin's style and talent that we have to thank for when we marvel at these maps today. What makes these maps so special is the detail of engraved vignettes that surround the map and often show indigenous scenes people in their environment and even more so historical buildings or historical views of towns and cities architecture and landscape. The project of 'The Illustrated Atlas' was designed to be finished just in time for the anxiously awaited "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations" or The Great Exhibition sometimes referred to as the Crystal Palace Exhibition in reference to the temporary structure in which it was held was an international exhibition that took place in Hyde Park London from 1 May to 11 October 1851. It was the first in a series of World's Fairs exhibitions of culture and industry that became popular in the 19th century and it was a much-anticipated event. The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert husband of the reigning monarch Queen Victoria. It was attended by numerous notable figures of the time including Charles Darwin Samuel Colt members of the Orléanist Royal Family and the writers Charlotte Brontë Charles Dickens Lewis Carroll George Eliot and Alfred Tennyson. Published in the Illustrated Atlas And Modern History Of The World Geographical Political Commercial & Statistical Edited By R. Montgomery Martin. Beautiful and fascinating map of Prussia from the Victorian Era. Prussia's boundaries are highlighted and illustrate its non-contiguous make up. Four De-jure 'Kleinstaaterei' or mini-/micro-states can be seen holding within the borders of Prussia - evidence of the fragmented nature of the German lands throughout the existence of the recently expired Holy Roman Empire. But this was changing: In the west lie Prussia's post-1815 acquisitions in Westphalia and the Rhineland while in the east 'Prussian Poland' and 'Posen' remind the viewers of the fate of the erstwhile Polish state. Four additional territorial possessions resemble globules from the main bodies of Prussian land. The more ancient lands of East Prussia and Brandenburg are identified also. Prussia is located in a busy neighbourhood with Denmark Sweden Russia Austria Saxony France Belgium and Holland abutting Berlin's territory. The islands of the Baltic are also identified. The much-heralded German railway system is shown on the map linking ports like Hamburg and Stettin to Berlin. The map is littered with the names of famous towns and cities such as Memel Konigsberg and Warsaw in the East Cracow Prague and Dresden in the South to Magdeburg and Dortmund in the west. The region's rivers such as the Elbe and Vistula are also identified. Relief is depicted through hachuring. A scale-bar is shown in the lower left corner. A Prussian eagle stands perched upon the highly decorative map border. John Tallis 7 November 1817 – 3 June 1876 was an English cartographic publisher. ‎Germany - Blaeu, Willem Janszoon (1596 - 1673)‎

‎Celeberrimi Fluvii Albis nova Delineatio.‎

‎1628. Amsterdam Blaeu 1628. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 53 cm x 30.6 cm. Sheet Size: 60 cm x 48.7 cm. Original map. In very good condition. Clean and bright with generous margins. Very minor tear to centre-fold at lower edge. French text on reverse. From Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The map which is in two strips one above the other shows the course of river Elbe in Germany. Text in Latin and German. The upper map orientated with South facing the upper border focuses on the area around Hamburg with the islands that are surrounding it within the Elbe. The regions' names are given in Latin: Ducatus Luneburgensis and Stormariae Pars for example. The nearby towns such as Buxtehude and Fliegenberg are also included. The islands along the Elbe's estuary are identified: for example Das Grass broeck Kirckhoff and Ross. The maritime and commercial importance of the prosperous city-port is suggested by the many ships seen along the river. Title cartouche coat of arms and decorative bar scale also included in upper map. The lower map shows the continued course of the river 'De Elff Stroom' out to the North Sea passing along Keydingerland De Bilkow and the riverbank towns such as Glückstadt Altrendorp and Brunsbuttel. The islands are identified as 'Dat Krudtstandt oder Pagensandt' and 'Dat Nie Werk'. Decorative cartouche with explanatory and provenantial text coat-of-arms compass rose and ships to sea are also shown on the lower map. Willem Janszoon Blaeu 1571-1638 was a Dutch cartographer atlas maker and publisher. Along with his son Johannes Blaeu Willem is considered one of the notable figures of the Netherlandish/Dutch school of cartography in its golden age the 16th and 17th centuries. After his father's death the brothers took over their father's shop and Joan took on his work as hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company. Later in life Joan would modify and greatly expand his father's Atlas novus eventually releasing his masterpiece the Atlas maior between 1662 and 1672. Wikipedia unknown‎
