Condannato a vagare eternamente tra i mari per il suo peccato d'orgoglio - e tra i suoi antenati oltre all'ebreo errante Ashavero si intravedono potentemente i grandi colpevoli di hybris a iniziare da Ulisse - l'Olandese viene strappato al suo destino dal sacrificio di Senta che volge le spalle a un felice matrimonio borghese per amarlo a prezzo della propria vita e dunque salvarlo risolvendo il dramma in un finale di morte e trasfigurazione che suscitò le ire di Friedrich Nietzsche. Come le altre sue versioni wagneriane risalenti agli anni Venti ma ancora oggi per molti versi insuperate la traduzione di Guido Manacorda riesce a fondere il rispetto del senso letterale del testo con il mantenimento dei suoi valori poetici. Un sobrio commento dà modo al lettore di penetrare i significati dell'opera anche nella sua articolazione musicale mentre un altrettanto misurato apparato di note riporta le non molte varianti del testo propriamente letterario rispetto a quello dello spartito teatrale. Scritto attorno al 1840 e rappresentato nel 1843 L'Olandese volante o Il vascello fantasma può essere considerato il primo dei grandi drammi wagneriani sia per l'impianto musicale che per la decisa svolta in direzione del mito dopo gli incerti esiti del grand-opéra storico il Rienzi. Rielaborando una leggenda popolare riscritta pochi anni prima da Heine Wagner vi inserisce uno dei temi fondamentali della sua successiva produzione quello della redenzione della forza sovrumana dell'amore che riesce a infrangere il dettato divino della punizione eterna. Ne è la fonte il poema epico medievale tedesco Parzival di Wolfram von Eschenbach. Lohengrin il cavaliere del cigno uno dei custodi del Santo Graal è infatti figlio di Parsifal mitico cavaliere della Tavola rotonda a sua volta protagonista dell'ultimo dramma di Wagner scritto trent'anni dopo.La prima rappresentazione si tenne a Weimar nel 1850 e fu curata da Franz Liszt amico e sostenitore di Wagner all'epoca in esilio perché coinvolto nei moti del 1849.La prima italiana che fu anche il debutto assoluto di un'opera di Wagner sulle scene nazionali si svolse invece nel 1871 a Bologna.Fra i brani più noti dell'opera si può citare il celebre coro nuziale all'inizio dell'ultimo atto ancora oggi eseguito in occasione delle cerimonie nuziali. unknown
