Desde sus a�os de estudiante Sylvia demostr� una voluntad incuestionable para lograr la perfecci�n en todo aquello que se propon�a alcanzar: tal vez este intenso af�n de superaci�n fue la causa de su intento de suicidio cuando en 1953. no pudo seguir un curso de taquigraf�a y fue rechazada para asistir a un curso literario de verano. Super� esta primera gran crisis vital y al poco tiempo march� a la universidad de Cambridge como estudiante becada. All� conoci� al poeta ingl�s Ted Hughes. La uni�n dur� seis a�os: Ted abandon� a Sylvia Plath y a los dos hijos del matrimonio cuando conoci� a una escritora jud�a menos extremista -en el sentido profundo de la palabra- que su esposa.
