Wagner Arthur L. Lieut. Col.
THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES. AN HISTORICAL SKETCH FROM THE EARLIEST PERIOD TO THE PRESENT TIME WITH AN ACCOUNT OF ITS ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION A SYNOPSIS OF THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE ARMY IN THE SPANISH WAR AND SOME REMARKS ON OUR MILITARY NECESSITIES
Akron Oh.: The Werner Company 1899. 103pp. plus twenty-five chromolithographs. Oblong folio. Original pictorial cloth. Corners bumped cloth edgeworn and spotted. Hinges weak. Internally clean and fresh. Wagner's lavish work contains numerous large chromolithographs depicting the history of the army of the United States from the American Revolution to the Spanish-American War with depictions of all. It also serves as a useful guide for identifying military dress throughout the first hundred years of the U.S. Army. The Werner Company of Akron Ohio was a leading innovator in new printing technology at the end of the century. According to McGrath the plates were created by combining the primary colors and sienna in careful mixtures allowing far fewer color stones than would have traditionally been used. "Not only are the plates technically interesting but three are from drawings by Henry Alexander Ogden" - McGrath. The result of this trichromatic chromolithographic technique while somewhat blotchy in appearance probably considerably lowered the cost of printing such a plate. Wagner's work was published in a one-volume edition which contained forty-two plates including seventeen of the U.S. Navy with accompanying text. It was also published in a two-volume set with one volume for the army as here and one for the navy. McGRATH pp.149 163 172. BENNETT p.109. The Werner Company hardcover books

Wagner K. W. Karl Willy
Die Wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen des Rundfunkempfangs
Berlin: Julius Springer 1927. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. viii 418 2-ads pages. 8vo. Publisher's blue/black boards with gilt lettering and publisher's device on spine and titles on front panel. Bookstore tag on front pastedown. Binding glued in gutter at Vorwort foreword. Otherwise a nice clean bright copy. Text in German. Cloth. Wagner was a full member of the Academy of Sciences Berlin and was made in 1931 an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Boston. He held numerous other awards including in 1930: Slaby-Plakette des Deutschen Funktechnischen Verbandes. In 1924 he founded the magazine Zeitschrift Elektrische Nachrichtentechnik.<br/><br/>In the foreword Wagner notes that the sudden onset of broadcasting has created high demand for wireless telephony and has accelerated technical developments dramatically. The new building blocks of broadcasting can be built on the progress made in radio technology. In addition to the general relations of electrodynamics the laws of transmission propagation and reception of electric waves the events occurring in the electron tubes and their mode of action in the various circuits as rectifiers amplifiers and vibration exciters and finally the laws of acoustics and the operation of the electro-acoustic devices all play a role. Knowing all of these things is essential for building a good broadcast radio but is not easy to acquire because so far there has been no where to go for sound details regarding all of these issues.<br/><br/>The Heinrich Hertz Society in 1925 created a plan to promote broadcasting over the airwaves by organizing a series of lectures about "The scientific basis of radio communications". This book was the much enlarged result. Wagner is probably best known for the development of what we now call wave filterswork he did starting in 1915.<br/><br/>"The most prominent researchers G. A. Campbell in the United States and K. W. Wagner in Germany explored selective filter circuits for telephone applications in the early years of World War I thus paving the way for the first ideas about electrical circuit synthesis. They designed sophisticated filter circuits simply by cascading elementary sections of lossless inductors and capacitors. The circuits obtained in this way had a striking similarity to circuit models in engineering transmission line theory and henceforth were called ‘wave filters'." Life and Work of Wilhelm Cauer 1900 - 1945 Cauer et al Proc. MTNS2000 Perpignan France June 19 - 23 2000<br/><br/>Waveguide filters today are most useful in the microwave band of frequencies where they are a convenient size and have low loss. Examples of microwave filter use are found in satellite communications telephone networks and television broadcasting. <br/><br/>Davis Electrical and Electronic Technologies #372 noting that in 1915 filter technology came into being with the independent proposal of it by Campbell and Wagner. Wagner Richard translated by Alfred Forman
The Ring of the Nibelungen
London: Schott 1877. First Edition. 1/2 cloth. Near fine. 1st collected edition in English complete in 356 pages a copy with less pages is missing something. The Rhein-Gold The Walkyrie Siegfried and Dusk of the Gods preceded in English only by the privately printed individual librettos a hastily gathered abridged assembly of 238 pages total published to secure copyright. Our edition issued to accompany Wagner's conducting of the cycle in London has all 4 parts with all the stage directions and dialogue. Contemporary half cloth marbled boards printed paper label near fine complete with the volume half-title the 4 half-titles for the individual parts and the coda To Richard Wagner. Ex-Edw. Schuberth with his company's oval stamp to the general half-title. The source was the prodigious German epic poem Das Nibelungen Lied anonymously written by an unknown massive-aggressive in the 12th century about events in the 5th or 6th. It recounts the deeds of Siegfried the Dragon Slayer the Germanator his betrayal and murder and the revenge of his wife Kriemhilda the real heroine. In 1816 Professor of philology Karl Lachmann began a careful study of the 11 known more or less complete manuscripts then ordered them chronologically collated corrected translated and amalgamated them to finally produce the version in Middle High German. It remains a foundational pillar of European literature but it was Wagner 1813-1883 who transformed it into an opera the only venue where people die of love by first revisiting Lachmann then brooding upon it and finally escalating the dramatic harmonic and most famously the instrumental forces beyond any of his predecessors setting a new and basic though often ignored challenge for his successors. The Ring Cycle exemplifies his theories and it's conjoining with national epic poetry was the appropriate agent for a masterwork. Schott unknown books
