‎Sabina, vrouw van Hadrianus. Een bijzondere liefdesgeschiedenis.‎

‎, Primavera Pers, 2018 Paperback, 287 pagina's. ISBN 9789059972506.‎

‎Roman Senate as arbiter during the Second Century BC. Two Exemplary Case Studies: the Cippus Abellanus and the Polcevera Tablet‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 256 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:11 b/w, 1 tables b/w., 9 maps b/w, Languages: English, Latin, Italian. ISBN 9782503586885.‎

‎Summary In the wider context of the border conflicts that involve Rome as a third authority super partes, for which there is evidence already in the second century BC, two epigraphic documents stand out for the peculiarities distinguishing them from all others: the so-called Polcevera Tablet (concerning a dispute between Genuates and Viturii Langenses) and the Cippus Abellanus (related to a border dispute between Nolani and Abellani and written in Oscan). They make us aware of the political and municipal dynamics underlying the complex principle of Roman arbitration, often required to resolve territorial disputes, which were gradually evolving as Rome opened up to the East. What role did the Roman Senate play in such disputes? What exactly was the function of the referees sent by the City to settle the disputes with a super partes judgment? What was the importance of the agrarian reform of the Gracchi and the realisation of road axes in the acuity of such antagonisms? These are the questions to which this study tries to provide an answer. TABLE OF CONTENTS Illustrations Preface Introduction (Maria Federica Petraccia) 1. ‎Summary This volume, the third in the series MediTo, investigates the changing landscapes of Tuscany during Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Through a selection of thematic case studies, presented initially during the second International workshop held in Paganico (Grosseto, Italy) in June 2019 and here further developed, the volume explores the concepts of settlement, economic, and societal changes in both Tuscany and its broader Mediterranean context over the course of several centuries. Together, the contributions gathered here showcase how cities and rural settlements, when studied in their archaeological and historical context, shed light on a dynamic landscape in which natural resources played a crucial role in defining the success or later abandonment of sites. ‎Summary In the Late Republican period, Rome underwent monumental changes. Within the city, numerous building projects were undertaken by the wealthy and politically powerful as they jostled for power, while further afield, wars were fought and Rome's authority gradually expanded into new territories. One of the key players in this field was Julius Caesar, who took advantage of the fluid and fast-changing political and military alliances to position himself in the centre of power. During this time, he became the first to design a forum ? the Forum Iulium, now known as Caesar's Forum ? in his family's name. Today, this site, in the very heart of Rome, is home to The Caesar's Forum Project, where excavations have yielded new knowledge about both the long history of Rome, and the broader context of its global history and cultural heritage. Taking this project as its starting point, this volume draws together scholars working both on the excavations, and on Caesar more generally, to shed new light on the often enigmatic figure of Julius Caesar. The chapters gathered here offer insights into remains and sources from both the time of Caesar and from later periods, giving new perspectives not only on his life and death, but also on the central role that he has ever since continued to play in historiography since. ‎Summary The ancient Mediterranean basin was once thought to be populated by large, monolithic, cultural-political entities. In this conception, 'the Greeks', 'the Romans', and other stable and homogenous cultures interacted and vied for supremacy like early modern states or empires. Today, however, thanks largely to an ever-increasing archaeological record, critical and sensitive approaches to the literary evidence, and the impact and application of new theoretical approaches, the ancient Mediterranean region is instead argued to be full of dynamic microcultures organized in a fluid set of overlapping networks. While this atomization of culture has resulted in more interesting and accurate micro-histories, it has also challenged how we understand cultural interaction and change. This volume draws on this new understanding of cultural identity and contact to address the themes of adoption, adaption, and innovation in Pre-Roman Italy from the 9th-3rd centuries BCE. The contributors to this volume build upon recent paradigm shifts in research that challenge traditional Hellenocentric models and work to establish a new set of frameworks for approaching the tangled question of how 'indigenous' and 'foreign' features relate to one another in the material record. Using focused case-studies, ranging from the role played by mobile populations in transferring ideas and technologies to the different ways in which 'foreign' artistic elements were used by Italian peoples, the volume explores what the ? now commonly accepted ? connectedness of a wider Mediterranean world meant for the people of Italy in practical terms, and offers new models for how concepts and ideas were transmitted, reinterpreted, repurposed, and re-appropriated in early Italy to fit within their local context. ‎Summary Food determines who we are. We are what we eat, but also how we eat, with whom we eat, where we eat and, in some cases, even why we eat. Food production and consumption in the ancient world can express multiple dimensions of identity and negotiate belonging to, or exclusion from, cultural groups. It can bind through religious praxis, express wealth, manifest cultural identity, reveal differentiation in age or gender, and define status. As a prism through which to investigate the past, its utility is manifold. The chapters gathered together in this ground-breaking book explore the intersections between food, consumption, and ritual within Etruscan society through a purposeful cross-disciplinary approach. It offers a unique and innovative selection of up-to-date analysis from a variety of Etruscan food-related topics. From banqueting, feasting, fish rites, and symbolic consumption to bio-archaeological data, this volume explores a new and exciting field in ancient Italian archaeology. ‎Summary In the Roman world, wall paintings were one of the most pervasive art forms, adorning buildings of all levels, from public spaces and elite houses to far more modest dwellings. Yet despite the very visual nature of their work, Roman painters have remained largely invisible to history. This book attempts to rectify this situation, by shifting the focus from the paintings themselves to the people who realized them, looking beyond the bright colours and imaginative forms to investigate the materials, production practices, and choices underpinning artistic decisions. Taking Pompeii as its starting point, this volume reconstructs what it meant to paint for a living, and asks if it was actually possible to make a living as a painter in the Roman world. Wall paintings are investigated stylistically but also from an ethnological and economic point of view. Broader comparisons across time and space, combined with a quantitative analysis of the labour involved in making wall paintings, allow the author to assess this art form as an economically-embedded practice. Through this unique approach, the volume exposes the social and economic forces underlying craft production, and offers new insights into the lived experience of Roman artisans. ‎Summary The archaeological excavations conducted from one end of the Mediterranean zone to the other have illuminated the place of gods in the ritual practices in the dwellings of the Graeco-Roman era. The discovery of multiple artefacts, dedicated spaces, and figurative paintings support new avenues of historical, anthropological, and social reflection with the aim of better understanding domestic religious practices in the polytheistic contexts of antiquity. This collective volume organizes those reflections around three axes. The first axis centres on identifying the deities that were favoured in domestic sanctuaries. Which gods are represented and which are not? The second axis concerns the interrelationships evident within domestic ritual spaces and sanctuaries. The third axis is dedicated to the anthropology of rituals. Lines of inquiry informed by anthropological, social, and phenomenological approaches are assuming ever-greater importance in scholarship on Antiquity. It is from this perspective that the authors explore the role that domestic ritual spaces play in shaping the lived environment. ‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 402 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:10 col., 2 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503599229.‎

‎Summary Recent years have seen a significant increase in migration and displacement. Due to economic, political, and climatic pressures, large numbers of individuals are leaving their countries of origin and settling in new environments and societies. As a result, national identity has increasingly come to the fore in public discourse. Shaping and reshaping national agendas, debates surrounding national identity are affecting policies and influencing voting behaviours. Discourse on this issue is often centred on the idea of autochthony and nativism. Yet we do not encounter such anxieties in ancient Rome, one of the longest-lasting political orders in history. Unlike among the Greeks, the idea of autochthony did not take root among the Romans. Instead, Rome's identity tended to be fluid, accommodating the development of highly variegated and multi-ethnic groups and societies. The purpose of this volume is to understand how the Romans represented themselves and how others defined and regarded them. It aims to identify the various narratives that contributed to the construction of Roman self-representation by raising the following questions: What stories did Romans tell about themselves? How did they enact and perform their selfhood in biographical and autobiographical sources? How did Greek and Judean sources understand and define Roman identity? And, taken together, how did these narratives influence Roman self-perception? Rather than arguing for a monolithic or coherent understanding of Romanitas, this volume explores a variety of performances and manifestations of Roman identity. It focuses both on sources where the self or individual is the primary focus, alongside more general texts dealing with specific elements of Roman identity. ‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, vii + 205 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:96 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9780897223669.‎

‎Summary The Roman empress Faustina the Younger, wife of the emperor Marcus Aurelius and mother to at least eleven imperial children, including the future emperor Commodus, not only played a key role in Roman history of the 2nd century AD but also was the subject of almost unparalleled commemoration in visual media, especially sculpture and coinage, during her lifetime. This book examines the single largest surviving ancient source for the portraiture and public image of Faustina the Younger: the coinage struck in her name under Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. The coinage of Faustina the Younger is rich in original iconography and long in duration but its chronology and the relationships between its various types are unclear at best, unknown at worst. This study seeks to remedy this situation by employing the methodology of die analysis to create a new and firm chronology for Faustina's coinage. The results make it possible to establish an authoritative typology for Faustina's portraiture and to show the precise relationship between the diverse obverse and reverse types. The die analysis also clarifies Faustina's complicated iconographic program, making it possible to compare it directly with the iconography of the better-dated coinage of her male contemporaries. Taken together, these results permit a complete re-evaluation of the coinage, portraits and public image of Faustina the Younger. TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction. ‎Summary This book stems from a conference on Livy held at the University of Padua, on the occasion of the bimillenary of the historian's death (6-10 November 2017). The aim of the volume is to shed new light on lesser-known aspects of Livy's historiography, by approaching his work from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective. The papers, written by established scholars as well as by younger researchers, span from classical philology to ancient history and archaeology, also incorporating an in-depth investigation of Livy's reception through the centuries (from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era) and different fields of the humanities (philosophy, political thought, figurative arts). ‎Value of Making. Theory and Practice in Ancient Craft Production‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, xiv + 254 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:74 b/w, 46 col., 12 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503595191.‎

‎Summary This volume presents new scholarship on the value and valuing of craft production in ancient societies around the Mediterranean. Ancient economic history, especially when approached archaeologically, has typically - and with good reason - focused upon the objects that were produced by craftspeople, their form and style, and their distribution. Typological approaches necessary for sorting and analysing large bodies of material evidence have also prioritized the final form of artefacts. Yet it was first and foremost the craftspeople behind these items who were responsible for an item's functionality, its purpose, and its value, and these roles have in recent years received fresh attention in anthropological and sociological studies. The contributions gathered in this volume revolve around the role of makers, their handling of materials, and their place in networks of production and consumption, whilst at the same time remembering that craftspeople were never lone forces but depended on wider networks of supplies, colleagues, and consumers, as well as more ephemeral considerations such as aesthetics and religious value. Through this approach, the volume sheds new light not only on a range of crafts and materials from the ancient world, but also on the value of making and the making of value in ancient Mediterranean societies. ‎Summary Ancient seal impressions that were once employed to seal a variety of objects, in particular different kinds of documents, can offer a wealth of information not only about iconography, but also about the dissemination of ideas and beliefs. Their usage provides evidence about the continuation, transformation, and mutual influences that impacted upon local traditions, as well as shed light on administrative and bureaucratic practices. Drawing together in-depth contributions by specialists in the field, this timely volume - the first of its kind in twenty-five years - offers new insights into seals and their importance during the relatively understudied Hellenistic period (c. 325-25 BCE), as well as contextualizing this subject through a focus on related fields such as glyptics and numismatics. The twelve chapters included here explore the importance of hoards, among them those from Delos, Doliche, Edfu, Kedesh, Pistiros, Seleucia-on-the-Tigris, Selinunte, and Uruk, and examine themes that range from the persistence of pharaonic imagery on Ptolemaic sealings and Greek influence on Sicilian seals, to the survival of Mesopotamian traditions on Parthian clay tablets and the use of Hellenistic iconography on Bactrian finger rings. Through this multifaceted approach, this volume is able to elucidate the daily realities of social, public, and private archival practices that went beyond the political and elite levels of life, and to illuminate aspects of Hellenistic history that have long remained obscure or inaccessible.

‎, Brepols - Institut d'Etuges Augustiniennes, 2021 Paperback, 324 pages, Size:165 x 250 mm, Language(s):French, English, Italian. ISBN 9782851213143.‎

‎Summary This volume brings together contributions concerning the figure of Irenaeus (ca 130-ca 200), a Christian author from Asia minor, Greek by language and culture, who spent the second part of his life "among the Celts", "in the neighbouring regions of the Rh ne", to use his own words. It seems quite probable that Irenaeus' route from East to West passed through Rome and that he stayed there for some time. Therefore the papers in this volume, by researchers of various origins, are grouped into three parts corresponding to these three geographical areas - Asia, Rome, Gaul - and their respective cultural contexts. Most of the papers adopt a general historical approach in exploring various dimensions of Irenaeus' context: cultural and literary life in Asia, especially in Smyrna; multilingualism in the Roman Empire; the attraction of Rome for scholars, philosophers and rhetoricians of Greek origin; the expansion of Lyon in the second century and the flourishing of its economic and cultural life. Other contributions focus on the contemporary presence of various religious components, in particular on Jewish traditions and on the vicissitudes and organization of the first Christian communities, with attention to Gnostic groups. The papers are preceded by an original biographical account of Irenaeus, newly proposed on the basis of indications provided by his own work. ‎Summary This volume, the first in a new series dedicated to the archaeological and historical landscapes of central Mediterranean Italy, aims to offer a fresh and dynamic new approach to our understanding of central-southern maritime Tuscany during the Roman period. Drawing on research that was initially presented at the first International Mediterranean Tuscan Conference (MediTo) held in Paganico (Grosseto, Italy) in June 2018, and supported by invited papers from other experts in the field, this collection of essays offers the most up-to-date research into Roman and Late Antique landscapes within Tuscany and its broader Mediterranean context, as well as the political, economic, and social networks that developed in this area during the Classical Period. Ultimately, what emerges from this in-depth study of river valleys, urban centres, and coastal settlements is an understanding of a dynamic Roman territory of cities and villages, villas and sanctuaries, minor sites, and manufacturing districts in which the local population fought to establish and maintain connections with the wider Mediterranean. ‎Caesar's Past and Posterity's Caesar‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, xii + 248 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:42 b/w, 11 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503591308.‎

‎Summary Gaius Julius Caesar was the first to design a forum in his family's name. The forum itself had two focal points - a temple to Venus Genetrix and an equestrian statue of Caesar himself - carefully juxtaposed to create a narrative of a strong, enterprising, and controversial sovereign to whom legitimacy was granted by his divine lineage and links to Rome's mythical founders. Through this design, the expansion of the older Forum Romanum thus became a promotion of Caesar himself in a clever show of identity politics. It was a bold - and ultimately fatal - undertaking, and it demonstrates a political vision that not only divided his contemporaries but that has continued to drive scholarly debate, with Caesar variously realized as a mirror for Antiquity, a representative of an age, and a ruler to be examined in relation to all applicable dilemmas and conflicts. This important volume offers new insights into the legacy of Julius Caesar by focusing on two central questions: how did he use the past to construct his own persona as head of the Roman State and Empire? And how has he been remembered - and used - by posterity? Contributions from a range of fields, among them archaeology, classical studies, and history, engage with these questions as they explore Caesar's own self-fashioning through his use of city space, rituals, wars, history, and literature, as well as tracing how he and his actions have been understood, justified, criticized, and used in the centuries since his death, from late antique literature to nineteenth-century drama. ‎Vigilemus et Oremus'. The Theological Significance of 'Keeping Vigil' in Rome from the Fourth to the Eighth Centuries‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 411 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:94 tables b/w., Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503590882.‎

‎Summary Christians have observed vigils in both East and West from earliest times. In the broad liturgical tradition of Christianity, the idea of keeping vigil appears to manifest the Church's eschatological nature. Documentary evidence from the earliest centuries reveals that some Christians kept a night watch at the graves of martyrs and other heroes of the faith as to anticipate that dawn when the rising Sun of Justice would return in fulfilment of his promise. Eventually, vigils appear not just for Easter, Pentecost and saints' days, but also for Christmas, the dedication of a church building, and on Saturday evening of the uniquely Roman quarterly Ember Weeks. Liturgical sources of the sixth, seventh, and eighth centuries reveal that such practices became relatively standardized with the assignment of specific Mass texts and scriptural readings, yet we know very little about the precise elements which comprised a vigil liturgy and of their theological significance. At the same time these vigils were so important that they attracted to themselves the celebration of major sacramental liturgies during them. Hence, the Paschal Vigil, which existed for centuries as a vigil liturgy of scriptural readings and prayers gradually became the setting for the annual baptismal celebration. This book examines the nature of Roman vigil liturgies in the early centuries of Christianity to unravel the most primitive structure of keeping vigil and to provide a better understanding of the Paschal Vigil, which Augustine of Hippo affirms as the 'mother of all vigils.'‎

‎Summary About 130 Latin inscriptions shine a fascinating light on the medium-sized Roman town of Grumentum in ancient Lucania. Most of these stones have hardly been studied since the end of the 19th century. They now for the first time appear in a scholarly edition with revised Latin text, illustration, apparatus criticus, translation and extensive commentary. Both the introduction and the edition illustrate the richness of the material: archaeology, politics, institutions, the Roman army, economy, religion, family and life course, and Christianity are dealt with. The use learned scholars made of the inscriptions opens a window to Italian intellectual history from the Renaissance on. Written and presented in an accessible way, this volume avoids the pitfalls of highly technical epigraphical editions, and opens the field to archaeologists, (ancient) historians and a more general audience with an interest for Roman sites in general, and this hidden gem in Basilicata in particular. ‎Summary This multidisciplinary volume features a targeted study of the main questions relating to Roman historiography. It envisages successively the morphology, the themes and the survival of that major literary form. In point of fact historiography appears etymologically less as a science than as an art aiming to express through writing the significance of the human messages conveyed by the past. In this respect we must never lose sight of the fact that knowledge of history proves to be essential for the education as well of the citizens as of the high rulers, whose public services have to be put in perspective. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 724 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503586472.‎

‎Summary What were the ideas that the ancient Greeks and Romans held about warfare? What do contemporary sources tell us about this? Is it possible to trace a development in the way of thinking about war in antiquity? These are the questions that are discussed (and answered) in this study. It combines a close reading of all the sources that we have - mostly written, like literary and historiographical, but also non-written, like art, monuments and coinage. The analysis of the discourse is accompanied by and contrasted with arguments raised by today's specialists in the field of warfare and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The study treats recurrent cultural themes like courage, fatherland, or victory within a chronological framework, for discourse features cannot be isolated from the context of their time. For each specific period - Greek, Hellenistic and the six parts of the long and diverse Roman time - conclusions are drawn. The remarkable developments in time that can be observed, especially in Rome, are brought together in the final chapter. TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface 1. Introduction: Culture and War 2. ‎Leadership and Community in Late Antiquity. Essays in Honour of Raymond Van Dam‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, xiv + 337 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:12 b/w, 2 col., 5 graphs, Language: English. ISBN 9782503583235.‎

‎Summary Throughout a distinguished career, Raymond Van Dam has contributed significantly to our understanding of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages with ground-breaking studies on Gaul, Cappadocia, and the emperor Constantine. The hallmarks of his scholarship are critical study of a wide variety of written and material sources and careful historical analysis, insightfully rooted in sociological and anthropological methodologies. The essays in this volume, written by Van Dam's former students, colleagues, and friends, explore the dynamics between leaders and their communities in the fourth through seventh centuries. During this period, people negotiated profound religious, intellectual, and cultural change while still deeply enmeshed in the legacy of the Roman Empire. The memory of the classical past was a powerful and compelling social and political force for the denizens of Late Antiquity, even as their physical surroundings came to resemble less and less the ideals of the Greco-Roman city. These themes - leadership, community, and memory - have been central to Van Dam's work, and the contributors to this volume build on the legacy of his scholarship. Their papers examine how leaders exercised their authority in their communities, at times exhibiting continuity with ancient patterns of leadership, but in other cases shifting toward new paradigms characteristic of a post-classical world. Taken together, the essays produce a fuller picture of the Mediterranean world and add further nuance to our understanding of Late Antiquity and early Middle Ages as a time of both continuity and transformation. ‎Facies e culture nell'et del Bronzo italiana?‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 321 pages, Size:190 x 255 mm, Illustrations:40 b/w, 25 col., Languages: Italian, English. ISBN 9789492771353.‎

‎Urban Practices. Repopulating the Ancient City‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, xii + 172 pages, Size:216 x 280 mm, Illustrations:73 b/w, 1 col., 1 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503584614.‎

‎Summary Cities in the ancient world, much like in the modern era, were not simply a locus for population and a hub for social, cultural, and economic activity, but were themselves the products of urban practices. This volume draws together two often disparate fields - urban space and human practice - to explore the actors and actions that underpinned ancient cities and to offer unique insights into the lives of those who dwelt there. Placing particular emphasis on social practice theory, the contributions gathered together in this book seek to analyse the development of the city, especially public urban spaces, from the archaic period up to Roman Imperial times. A key focus is on infrastructure, public spaces used for politics (particularly the Forum Romanum), and the role of sanctuaries and the way in which they were shaped by cult activity. Through this unique approach, this volume is able, for the first time, to bring the inhabitants of ancient cities to the fore, and in doing so, to offer key insights into the development of spatial routines, the interaction of these routines with the material setting of a city, and the way in which cities themselves played an important role in shaping the people and practices within them. ‎Past as Present. Essays on Roman History in Honour of Guido Clemente‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 810 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:24 b/w, 1 maps b/w, Languages: English, Italian, Spanish. ISBN 9782503585246.‎

‎Summary This volume in honour of Guido Clemente collects essays by nearly 40 established and younger scholars from all over the world, who want to express their gratitude for prof. Clemente's direct or indirect teaching. While the essays included in the volume cover domains ranging from methodology and (the history of) historiography, over archaeology and epigraphy, to politics and religion, they all resort under the main theme of 'the past as present'. This main theme is inspired by a prominent feature of Guido Clemente's scholarly work: the awareness that from the last centuries of the Roman Republic up until Late Antiquity, a sense of the past 'as present' marked the rhythm of everyday life and provided the key to understanding ongoing societal change.
