A History of the Gypsies of Eastern Europe and Russia, drawn from previously untapped East European, Russian, and traditional sources, explores the life, history, and culture of the Gypsies, or Roma, from their early appearance in the region during the Middle Ages until the present. David Crowe's study looks at the rich and diverse cultural and historical traditions of the Gypsies in each nation and region. He covers Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, the republics of the former Yugoslavia, Albania, and the states that made up the former Soviet Union. He focuses in particular on Russia, where the Gypsies have exerted a profound influence on literary and musical traditions. Crowe also explores the virulent prejudice and mistreatment that has been so much a part of the Gypsies tragic history and culminated in their losses during the Nazi Holocaust. In 4° (22,5x16,5 cm); (8), 751, (1) pp. Legatura ottocentesca in mezza pelle con piatti foderati con carta marmorizzata ottocentesca, difetti alle cerniere e piccolo mancanza al dorso. Testatine, finalini ed iniziali ornate. Bell’edizione veneziana stampata da Baglioni delle opere del grande, gesuita, predicatore e scrittore originario di Nettuno (Roma) Paolo Segneri. Questa edizione non è da confondersi con l’edizione, sempre stampata da Baglioni, che conteneva solo L' incredulo senza scusa. Anche qui le prime 239 pagine sono occupate dall’Incredulo ma poi, Baglioni, aggiunse numerose altre pere dello stesso Segneri, seguono in questa edizione, ognuno con frontespizio proprio e alcune in prima edizione postuma: Concordia tra la fatica e la quiete nell'orazione espressa ad un religioso in risposta... ; Lettera di risposta sopra l'Eccezioni, che da un difensore de' moderni quietisti a chi ha impugnate le loro leggi ...; I sette principj, su cui si fonda la nuova orazione di quiete riconosciuti per poco saldi, nella pratica facile che ne dà un direttore moderno alla sua Filotea ; Fascetto di varj dubbi intorno all'orazione oggi detta di pura fede, di fede sola, di fede semplice, o pur di quiete... ; Il divoto di Maria Vergine istruito ne' motivi, e ne' mezzi, che lo conducono a ben servirla...; Il parroco istruito, opera in cui si dimostra a qualsisia curato novello il debito che lo stringe, e la via da tenersi nell'adempirlo...; Il Confessore istruito in cui di dimostra a un confessore la pratica di amministrare con frutto il Sagramento della Penitenza...; Il Penitente istruito a ben confessarsi, operetta spirituale da cui ciascuno può apprendere il modo certo di ritornare in grazia del suo Signore... ; Il Magnificat incominciato a spiegarsi dal padre Paolo Segneri... ed interrottogli dalla sua Morte, opera postuma ed imperfetta. Vita e morte di S. Alessio Confessore nuovamente ristampata
In 12° (14x8,4 cm); 24 pp. Brossura della seconda metà dell'ottocento. Qualche pieghetta agli angoli, un lieve segnetto di inchiostro all'ultima carta e per il resto in buone condizioni. Bellissima scena animati al frontespizio di chiaro gusto popolare. Il frontespizio oltre alla scenetta è presente il titolo, il luogo di stampa e di vendita il tutto entro cornice floreale. Rarissima, nessun esemplare censito in ICCU per questa edizione, di rara agiografia dedicata alla vita ed alla morte di Alessio, detto "l'uomo di Dio" (Roma, IV secolo - Roma, 412). Figlio di Eufemiano, patrizio romano, rinunciò alle ricchezze ed ad al matrimonio orami deciso, per diventare un mendicante. "La sua vita è conosciuta attraverso tre tradizioni, una siriaca, una greca e una romana; in Occidente fu scritta nell'XI secolo anche una Vie de saint Alexis, un poemetto che contribuì a diffonderne il culto. Secondo la leggenda siriaca, Alessio, figlio di Eufemiano e Agalé, era un patrizio di Costantinopoli, fidanzato con una donna virtuosa che convinse, la sera delle nozze, a rinunciare al matrimonio. Si imbarcò per la Siria del nord (l'attuale Turchia) per arrivare poi alla città di Laodicea e poi a Edessa (l'attuale ?anl?urfa), dove si finse mendicante. Quello che raccoglieva di giorno, lo distribuiva di sera ai poveri della città: per il suo ascetismo venne chiamato Mar-Riscia (uomo di Dio). Ad Edessa, poco prima di morire come mendicante in un ospedale, rivelò di appartenere ad una famiglia nobile romana e di aver rifiutato il matrimonio per consacrarsi a Dio; così gli furono tributati gli onori degli altari. Secondo la versione greca e romana, invece, Alessio, patrizio di Roma, dopo una vita da mendicante a Edessa, ritornò diciassette anni più tardi a Roma a casa del padre (che però non lo riconobbe): qui visse come mendicante per altri diciassette anni in un sottoscala. Prima di morire scrisse in un biglietto tutta la sua vita, della rinuncia del matrimonio e della partenza a Edessa. Secondo la leggenda solo il papa riuscì ad aprire la sua mano e a leggere il biglietto, provocando la sorpresa dei genitori. Alla morte del santo si sprigionò prodigiosamente un suono festoso di campane". Raro.

Le Landscape Français, Italie
In 8°; (8), 232, (2) pp. e 12 c. di tav. fuori testo compreso primo frontespizio inciso. Bellissima legatura coeva in tutta seta amaranto con scritta “Italie” e ricchissimi fregi in oro al dorso (piccolo difetto della sola seta alle cerniere. Il tutto contenuto entro cofanetto coevo di colore amaranto (leggermente scolorito). Tagli dorati. Qualche leggerissima brunitura in poche pagine, alcune tavole brunite (come in tutti gli esemplari) a causa della carta utilizzata (due con brunitura più consistente ma sempre visibile) e per il resto buono-ottimo esemplare in bella legatura. Prima edizione di questa pubblicazione che si inserisce nella tradizione del Grand Tour ottocentesco con racconti e descrizioni di viaggi e luoghi italiani fatte da diversi autori in particolare legati al gusto romantico: de Théophile Gautier, De Lamartine, Hédouin, Bignan, Le baron de Mortemart, Charles Malo, Gauthier d’ Arc, etc… che descrivono: Venezia, Ischia, Rimini, Ferrara, Pompei,Milano, Il Lago di Como, “Les Enfers de Virgile”, il Lago Maggiore, Sorrento, Firenze, il Vesuvio, il Lago di Lugo, Roma, Pozzuoli, Torino, Napoli, Genova, Domodossola ed il Golfo di Salerno. L’opera è arricchita da 12 bellissime tavole fuori testo con vedute italiane di Venezia, Rimini, Milano, Lago di Como, Lago Maggiore (Isola Bella), Sorrento, Firenze, Lago di Lugo, Roma, Pozzuoli, Napoli, Domodossola.
