2 ½ pages envelope addressed in Nightingale's hand to Blackwell in London redirected to Cornwall marked 'Private."
Original folds. Very good condition.

This splendid letter connects two of the most influential women of the nineteenth century Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Blackwell.

"The achievements of Florence Nightingale the founder of modern nursing and Elizabeth Blackwell America's first female physician have been counted among the initial breakthroughs of the women's cause in England and the United States" Lois Monteiro "On Separate Roads: Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Blackwell" Signs Spring 1984.

The two women first met in 1850 when Blackwell was studying at St. Bartholomew's in London after completing her medical courses in New York making her the first American female physician. She became the first woman on the British medical register and made England her home. Similarly Nightingale was about to begin her nursing studies in the summer of 1851.

Over the coming years the two revolutionized medicine for women and played crucial roles in social reform. By the end of the decade Nightingale as a result of her heroic efforts during the Crimean War her nursing reforms and her seminal book Notes on Nursing was among the most celebrated women in England. In this letter Nightingale writes to her old friend

"Nothing that you do independently of our being old friends can fail to interest me. I wish you 'God speed' on all that you undertake. To bring the people the little as well as the big to observe the 'Laws of Life' the title of Blackwell's first book is indeed the only way of doing the least good the first business of every body.

"But I am not sure that I could aid in doing this in the way you point out. Sanitary work of this kind can only be done by going personal grappling with the evils by going personally among those for whom it is to be done – going for instance into all the back slums of London & other towns – practically learning & teaching there what constitutes the health of dwellings the health of children the health of populations of occupations &c. In such a work alas! I who am a prisoner to bed can take no part …"

This outstanding letter on medicine health and social reform linking two towering figures of the nineteenth century is worthy of the finest collections.

No place, [August 2], 1871
