Sean Scully: Resistance and Persistance: Selected Writings
London: Merrell 2006. Hardcover. VG/VG. Orange boards with white lettering on spine. Illustrated dust jacket with white and grey lettering. 192 pp. Color illustrations. "Sean Scully born 1945 is one of the leading painters of our time. His successful career has been built on an apparently simple recipe of abstract painted stripes and bars in muted colours which despite their apparent simplicity and serentiy offer unsettlingly complex possibilities. His paintings are exhibited and collected by many major museums throughout the world from Canberra to Washington D.C." "This book brings together Scully's own writings for the first time and presents them alongside superb reproductions of the artist's paintings. The collection reveals Scully's sense of his position within modern painting and his understanding of and response to the artists whom he most admires. He discusses the circumstances that led him to become a painter; and outlines and expands on many of the themes that have engaged his art for the past twenty years."--Jacket. Contents as follows: Giorgio Morandi : Reisistance and persistence --; High and low or the sublime and the ordinary --; Van Gogh --; Diptych --; The argument --; The subject --; The wall --; Rothko : bodies of light --; On mythology abstraction and mystery --; Ian Stephenson : man of the north --; Liliane Tomasko : the third shore --; On photography --; On painting --; Landline --; Eva --; Interview with Eric Davies --; Yuendumu --; The Phillips Collection lecture. Upton Florence K. words by Bertha Upton
The Golliwogg's Bicycle Club
London New York and Bombay: Longmans Green & Co. 1896. Hardcover. Good Plus/No Jacket. Oblong 11 By 9 Inches. 63 pp. Full color plate illustrations not quite every other page with text illustrations interspersed in margins of comic verse. One of the best of the politically dubious relics of late nineteenth century children's literature. It is hard to say whether the infectious humor of the illustrations or of the fluent inspired doggerel almost certainly emulated by the likes of Roald Dahl is the bigger draw. Probably the rarest of the highly desirable Golliwogg series this one taking our characters to Paris Japan and Africa. This copy has considerable soilage on the boards which are illustrated paper pasted onto the boards. Shelfwear along edges and corners. Original spine band survives with some wear by tips and rubbing along gutters. Interior tight. Some scattered soilage to pages but text and especially the illustrations remain attractive.

Longmans, Green & Co. hardcover books

A Children's Letter to President William McKinley after his Assassination Attempt
Chicago IL: Washington Locating Club September 6-15 1901. General wear toning and creasing. . A manuscript letter sent to President William McKinley by a children's club wishing him health and recovery after the assassination attempt on his life on September 6 1901. The club was the "Washington Locating Club" which was located in Chicago. The children had met President McKinley the year prior "during inaugural week under the auspices of 'Heart's Chicago American' school children's excursion." McKinley was apparently going to meet with the school children again on October 5 1901 but due to his death obviously never made it. At the top of the letter is a drawing done in pen of the US Capital Dome. The letter is signed by six children though the letter appears to have been written by the Secretary of the club Florence L. Smith 1887- who based on census records confirmed by her address was thirteen at the time of the letter. Pasted onto the side of the letter is a card with Florence's name and address. Measures 13 1/2" x 8"

President McKinley would die from his injuries on September 14 1901. Washington Locating Club unknown books
