Victorian full dark blue calf sometime respined spine lettered and decorated in gilt in compartments between raised bands date in gilt at foot of spine two line gilt border with gilt corner pieces all edges gilt endpapers renewed inscription on blank flyleaf "The Gift of The Countess of Lonsdale to John Peile 10th Novr. 1836". The principal wealth of the Earl of Lonsdale was from the coal trade with Ireland but the 3rd Earl bankrupted the coal mines in Whitehaven which led to the closing of Lowther Castle in 1936. A very good clean sound copy sides a little scratched corners of covers rubbed first section slightly sprung but binding firm from rebacking a couple of small marks in blank margins but contents clean throughout no inscriptions or markings in text. Original full brown embossed leather with gilt spine lettering marbled edges frontis portrait plus other engravings 544 pages plus advertisements. The spine is faded and cracked with the bottom two inches mainly chipped away joints cracked and chipped condition of covers quite good with a touch of edgewear but they are only holding by the binder's threads text block sound pages clean with occasional light foxing no names or other markings. Small stain to outer margin top of first few leaves including frontispiece title with ghost from frontis some light dampstains to upper margin throughout and few minor stains few top corners with flattened dog-ears all plates present with original tissue guards.
