The fascination exerted by the works of the illustrious Pieter Bruegel the Elder in the decades following his death in 1569 is matched only by the intense interest they generate today. At the end of the sixteenth century and in the first half of the seventeenth, the most ambitious art collectors fought over the few paintings by the master that were still on the market. This setting was the catalyst for the appearance of copies and pastiches ? and even deliberate forgeries. It was then that the elder son of Pieter Bruegel, known as Pieter Brueghel the Younger (whose name is spelled ?Brueghel? here, conforming to the signature that he adopted during the initial phase of his career) emerged as a legitimate successor, producing astonishingly faithful replicas of his father?s paintings. This was all the more surprising given that they were often made after works that were by then dispersed in diverse and sometimes inaccessible private collections. Operating within the context of a sizeable workshop, Brueghel supplied the market with hundreds of copies of variable quality according to demand. This enterprise merited re-evaluation from a technical point of view: how were such vast numbers of copies produced in practice? This three-volume book explores the intriguing Brueg[H]el phenomenon through the two artists? painting practices. The technical aspects of their works are investigated in a detective-like manner and are strikingly elucidated with a wealth of colour illustrations. The reader will come to understand the accomplished practitioner behind the genius that is Bruegel the Elder and the working procedures of his foremost emulator?s workshop. Furthermore, Brueghel the Younger?s exceptional qualities as a painter are singled out from those of his workshop production. Henry van de Velde (1863?1957) is considered one of the pioneers of modern architecture: he is world-famous for his beautiful buildings, furniture, utensils and typographical creations. Van de Velde, however, is much less well-known as a painter and draughtsman. Nevertheless, he had a lot of talent, especially as a draughtsman: his drawings bear witness to great originality and sincerity. Ten years after his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1880 to 1883, Van de Velde exchanged painting for the applied arts and architecture, fields in which he would build a brilliant career. His enormous output in the architectural field ensures that there is little interest in his painting work ? that attention only comes much later. Internationaal bekeken is Guy Vandenbranden ongetwijfeld de belangrijkste Belgische constructivist. In het begin van de jaren vijftig eiste hij de volle aandacht op toen hij zich naar het kunstideaal orienteerde dat vroeger reeds Piet Mondriaan en Victor Vasarely als het hunne hadden bestempeld: het constructivisme. Zoals alle belangrijke constructivisten, gebruikt Guy Vandenbranden als dominanten de geometrische oervormen. In sommige structuren plaatst hij deze elementen rustig en ongestoord naast elkaar, zodat ze telkens eerlijk naar voren treden, in andere reeksen zoekt hij naar snijding of doorkruising. Hierdoor bereikt hij een illusionisme, een ruimtelijk voor en achter elkaar, een mogelijk heen en weer bewegen van de gekozen elementen. Hij verwekt de indruk dat de bekomen harmonische constellatie door de geringste afwijking, door de zwakste beweging verstoord zou worden. Wie als Vandenbranden op kleuren verliefd is, kent de kleur en het evenwichtig spel tussen de kleuren een scheppende rol toe, gebruikt ze als constructieve fenomenen die het beeld volgens een eigen constituerende canon naar de evidentie voert. Soms dagen ze de toeschouwer zelfs uit, hem ertoe dwingend mee te spelen op het ritme van de opeenvolgende fasen van de beeldwording of door hun agressieve totaliteit.

KAREL MAES 1900 - 1974.
SOFTCOVER geillustreerde kartonomslag, 195 x 200mm., 240pp., zeer uitgebreid geillustreerd in kleur, biografisch materiaal in z/w. Karel Maes (1900-1974) maakte, samen met onder meer Jozef Peeters (1895-1960), deel uit van de eerste Belgische generatie van geometrisch abstracte schilders. Tegelijkertijd ontpopte hij zich ook als graficus. Zo ontwierp hij illustraties voor talloze Belgische avant-gardetijdschriften zoals Lumiere, Ruimte, Ca Ira, Het Overzicht en De Driehoek en 7 Arts. In diezelfde periode breidde hij z??™n oeuvre nog uit door z??™n specifieke abstracte beeldentaal te combineren met het ontwerpen van meubels, glasramen en tapijten. Doordat Karel Maes zich vanaf het einde van de jaren twintig meer en meer isoleerde van de kunstwereld, raakte z??™n werk onvermijdelijk in een vergeethoekje. Toch hield hij nooit op met schilderen en ontwerpen. Daarbij liet hij zich inspireren door de toen overheersende kunststromingen, het surrealisme en expressionisme, zonder evenwel geheel afstand te doen van het abstracte. De tentoonstelling poogt een zo accuraat mogelijke reconstructie te maken van de specifieke evolutie in het oeuvre van deze kunstenaar met aandacht voor alle facetten ervan. Toch blijven er vragen en raadsels: tot tweemaal toe werden de werken van Karel Maes vernietigd. Het overzicht van Karel Maes in het MuFDB is het eerste binnen een nieuwe tentoonstellingscyclus gewijd aan de vroegste generatie van abstracten en modernisten. Een vergeten generatie krijgt even terug de aandacht die hen toekomt. Door de tijdgenoten van Felix De Boeck (1898-1995) te belichten, wil het MuFDB zijn vaste collectie in een kunsthistorische context plaatsen en de grenzen van een monografisch museum doorbreken. Relie, sous jacquette originale d'editeur, 25.5x25.5 cm., 199 pp., illustrations en couleur, texte en francais, summary en neerlandais et en anglais. Monographie, Gogo was vanaf 1887 leerling aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen (oa. bij Eugene Yoors) en vanaf 1891 aan het Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten (oa. bij Piet Van der Ouderaa). Hij nam deel aan de wedstrijden voor de Prijs van Rome in 1892, 1895, 1898 (3de Prijs) en 1901 (2de Prijs; met 'De bedrukten troosten'). In 1904 werd hij leraar aan de Academie van Dendermonde en in 1910 aan die te Antwerpen. Van 1934 tot 1939 was Gogo directeur van de Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Dendermonde.Gogo schilderde figuren, landschappen (de Kempen, de Noordzeekusten), stadsgezichten, interieurs (vaak van kerken) en stillevens. Zijn thematiek verwerkte hij ook in litho?s. Gogo realiseerde een aantal muurschilderingen in de Opera in Antwerpen (1912). Deze werden later overschilderd. Hij was lid van de kunstenaarsverenigingen "De Scalden", "Als ik Kan" (waarvan hij later voorzitter werd) en "Nationaal Verbond van Kunstschilders en Beeldhouwers van Belgie".

Antiquity as inspiration can be revealed in the works of Paul Delvaux as from the beginning of the 1930s and gets more important during World War II, for example with the theme of the tragic city. His interest in antiquity is characterized by antique sculpture and leads the artist to the elaboration of a theatralic human figure. These theatralic and dramatic representations put on mythical figures like Pygmalion, Venus or Penelope as well as sirens, ephebes and hamadryads. Delvaux also evokes a certain secret sacrality of so-called ''places of memory'' as temples and antique places like the Acropolis, Olympia or Pompeii. Places which Delvaux visited on the occasion of his two journeys to Italy in 1937 and 1939 as well as on his travel through Greece in 1956. Finally, we should not forget a most important aspect of Delvaux's reception of antiquity: that of melancholic withdrawal. Jean Colin (1881-1961) is a Brussels painter that is no longer known today because he often followed the way to realism. This way of painting, which while he was alive fully assured him success, has passed fashion and no longer draws art lovers. But Colin also left high level impressionist works that have no longer been shown since his death, works he painted for his own pleasure, conscious as he was that his conservative customers couldn't appreciate them. After Colin's death, most of his impressionist works were spread out between the members of his family-in-law or bordered in the museum reserves. This ?tribute? is the amazing story of what happened to Jean Colin and to his hidden masterpieces. The introduction essay is by Eric Min, biographer of James Ensor, Rik Wouters and Henri Evenepoel. Nochtans heeft Colin ook een meesterlijk impressionistisch oeuvre nagelaten, al werd geen enkel stuk ervan ooit postuum geexposeerd. Colin schilderde die doeken immers voor zijn eigen plezier. Hij besefte dat zijn conservatieve clientele er niet rijp voor was.
