‎Daniel Colin was born in 1963 and was primarily influenced creatively by the 1980s growing up. The 1980s were a tumultuous period culturally, and were marked by growing global capitalism, global mass media, significant discrepancies in wealth, alongside a distinctive sense of music and fashion, epitomised by electronic pop music and hip hop. Artists growing up during this time were heavily influenced by this cultural atmosphere. The 1980s were a significant decade politically, marked by the African Famine and the end of the Cold War, which was signified by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Neo Geo and The Pictures Generation became leading art movements during the decade, alongside Neo-Expressionism which became well-known in Germany, France and Italy (where it was known as Transavanguardia). Artists such as Anselm Kiefer, J rg Immendorf, Enzo Cucchi, Francesco Clemente and Julian Schnabel were leading artists of the era, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, who established the street art and graffiti movements.‎

‎In 1912-1913, James Ensor produced a series of 32 drawings in coloured pencil titled Sc nes de la vie du Christ [Scenes from the life of Christ]. Each drawing on paper measures about 15 by 21 cm. The series depicts different episodes from the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. In it, Ensor managed to combine the sublime and the grotesque in an unsurpassed manner. Some compositions are quite conventional, others typically 'Ensorian', and some even humorous. Among the works in the series is a drawing in which Ensor portrays him-self as Christ, confronted with a dozen Belgian art critics who have gathered before him. In 1929 the drawings were made into lithographs and published in the form of an album by Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels. These drawings can be considered as a link between the Ostend master's early and later oeuvre. The series combines various motifs which Ensor also executed in oil paint. The author of the work, Xavier Tricot, also pays close attention to the figure of Christ in James Ensor's work. From 1885 onward, the figure of Christ occupied a central position in Ensor's oeuvre. ‎Born in Antwerp, Jules Schmalzigaug was a well-travelled Belgian futurist painter who came of age at the turn of the 20th century. He lived for a time in Paris, but eventually moved to Venice to participate in the Italian avant-garde art scene. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he relocated to the Netherlands and began experimenting with light and colour. Declared unfit for military service, he became lonely and fell into depression, and committed suicide in 1917. Forgotten for a time, his work was rediscovered in 1980 and has since appeared in international exhibitions on futurism. This monograph on Schmalzigaug contributes to a wider appreciation for his artistic genius. // Belgisch kunstenaar Jules Schmalzigaug (1882, Antwerpen) groeit op in een welgesteld milieu in het Antwerpse fin-de-si cle. Hij reist door Itali en Duitsland, leeft een ijd in Parijs, en installeert zich uiteindelijk in Veneti . Daar maakt hij al snel deel uit van een groep jonge avant-gardekunstenaars die de strijd aangaan met het nostalgische passe sme. Hij is de eerste Belg die deelneemt aan de Italiaanse futuristische beweging. Na de uitbraak van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werkt hij verder in Nederland aan zijn intrigerende experimenten met licht en kleur. Op vierendertigjarige leeftijd pleegt Schmalzigaug zelfmoord en daarmee komt een abrupt eind aan een veelbelovende carri re. Het werk van Jules Schmalzigaug wordt in 1980 herontdekt: verschillende van zijn werken worden getoond op de grote overzichtstentoonstelling Futurismo & Futurismi in het Palazzo Grassi in Veneti in 1986.
