Volume I consists of the drawings of the artist?s childhood, apprenticeship and first years as a master in Antwerp to his formative years in Italy, spent mostly in Mantua and Rome, with an excursion to Spain. These are the years primarily devoted to learning and absorbing the art of the past, from sixteenth-century German and Netherlandish prints to the works of the ancient and Italian Renaissance masters. A large number of these drawings consists of copies after the works of other artists, largely executed as part of the artistic training at the time. For the first time, Rubens's copies and their models are not discussed and illustrated as a separate entity but are fully integrated into the rest of his graphic oeuvre, thus showing copies and original compositions created at the same time side by side. The volume contains 204 entries, including several sheets with drawings on recto and verso. Each entry consists of a detailed physical description of the drawing, provenance, exhibition history, full bibliography and a critical, interpretive discussion. In addition, Volume I contains an essay on the history of the scholarship of Rubens?s drawings, a subject that has not been treated before. ISBN X.‎ ‎Paul Smolders (1921 - 1997) was een kunstschilder uit een lange Vlaamse traditie. Na het behalen van de licentiaatstitel Germaanse talen, schreef hij zich in voor een artistieke opleiding aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen. Isidore Opsomer, Julien Creytens en Albert Van Dyck werden zijn leraars. Hij had ook Frans Van Giel als mentor en leraar. Hij leerde er dat achter het schilderen van het uiterlijke, of het nu gaat om een landschap of een model, een mens en een ziel aanwezig zijn. Smolders was aanhanger van het intimisme en had een voorliefde voor het tekenen en schilderen van kinderen, ballerina's, jonge vrouwen en soms ook landschappen. Ook terrasjes en het moederschap zijn terugkerende thema's. Zijn werk heeft een dromerige sfeer maar is niet anekdotisch. Hij maakte veel schetsen en wordt beschreven als 'een buitengewoon knap tekenaar'. "Tekenen was voor hem essentieel en betekende bij uitstek de spontane verwerking van zijn denken." Smolders bleef steeds trouw aan zijn stijl. Hij was geen vernieuwer maar een gepassioneerd observator. Zijn werk werd onder andere tentoongesteld in Antwerpen, Brugge, Brussel en Knokke, maar ook in Den Haag, Rotterdam en New York. In 1952 ontving Smolders de prijs Appel van het Comit voor Artistieke Werking. Hij was een echte Brusselaar met roots in de Antwerpse Polder en Ossendrecht (Nederland). Voor een uitgebreide biografie kunt u terecht op http://martenmelsen.free.fr/index_N.htm Na eerst in 1894 een lange zomerperiode met een vriend-kunstschilder rond Stabroek en Berendrecht te hebben geschilderd n gefotografeerd, beslist Melsen om rond 1896 permanent naar Stabroek te trekken. Hij huurt een stuk in de driewoonst van de enorme boerin Mie Pot, die hij daarna regelmatig op zeer sappige en originele wijze heeft vereeuwigd op doek. Melsen?s oeuvre wordt bekend, hij verkoopt vanaf 1907 aan musea en wordt bevriend met Stijn Streuvels en James Ensor. Na zijn huwelijk in 1909 met de nicht van zijn boezemvriend, de befaamde toondichter August De Boeck, koopt hij rond 1912 twee huisjes aan het Hoogeind te Stabroek, die hij liet ombouwen tot kunstatelier ?t Vossevelt genaamd. De daarop volgende prille gezinsjaren worden een mooie periode van regelmatige tentoonstellingen en persoonlijk succes, dat plots door elkaar geschud worden in het oorlogsjaar 1914 door het drama van het verschrikkelijk conflict, dat jaren gaat duren. Het is niet toevallig dat vandaag pas het werk van Pierre Mertens als beeldend kunstenaar, psychotherapeut en ontwikkelingssamenwerker samenkomt en als geheel begrepen wordt.
