Bram Demunter's work is about us, human beings, and about the place we occupy in the world. It is about the mythologies we shape around ourselves, the narratives and the visual cultures we create, as well as the traces we leave behind in the natural world. His paintings and drawings strongly illustrate his process of collecting, examining and categorizing different elements. The artist can spend many hours studying an object, while wondering where it came from and what history it has been gone through. These objects then manage to nestle in his subconscious, establishing new connections between obscure stories, tales, legends and myths with forgotten symbolism, which he seamlessly connects to more recent events. His oeuvre does not convey an unambiguous message, but rather weaves meanings that resonate with individual and collective memories whereby a depicted motif reminds us of countless other images. His references do not focus on specific symbols or archetypes and must not be mistaken as unequivocal allusions. In doing so, the artist emphasizes that all things can exist simultaneously and can be displayed as such. This phenomenon is clearly demonstrated in his work Turn the Mud Around, where Demunter makes use of an eclectic range of influences and sources: ranging from the late Middle Ages to the Flemish Primitives as well as the impasto of seventeenth-century artists like Rubens and Jordaens. His artistic affiliations, such as his depiction of landscapes and other scenes of nature in some of his paintings, seem to originate from Italian Renaissance painting and and are reminiscent of the sfumato technique of that period. His imagery extends far beyond classical influences; it is infused with elements of twentieth-century abstract expressionism including artists such as Philip Guston, neo-expressionist Georg Baselitz and Grandma Moses. In addition, Demunter embraces the refinement of Indian miniature art, the splendor of Persian and Indian tapestries, alongside the intimacy of Enclosed Gardens. For this exhibition, Demunter drew inspiration from obscure maps and old books, diving deep into human history in search of handed-down traces of interaction with nature. Rocks are therefore an important theme in his work, and take the form of mountains, rock formations, caves, meteorites, thereby embodying ancient symbolism. The diversity of symbols reveals the deep-rooted human fascination with nature across epochs and cultures. Instead of using maps as merely representational tools, Demunter exploits them as sources that capture the human interaction with the world. Demunter's approach is not limited to visual compositions, but extends far beyond words: each work, whether drawn, painted or written, forms an exploratory journey, which transcends time and space; his images suspend time, as it were. Bram Demunter (b. 1993, Kortrijk) lives and works in Kortrijk, Belgium. Work of the artist can be found in several national and international collections. ?‎

Since 1989, he has drawn 31 covers for The New Yorker. Beno t is widely known for the eight portraits he created for the tiled walls in the Brussels metro station Maalbeek. Of zoals Hugo Claus het in die ene regel uit zijn gedicht Voor de poortneerschreef: "Aanwezig zijn, dat is voldoende". En dat is ze geweest, zowel in het leven als het oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Al in het vroege werk van Raveel is ze duidelijk herkenbaar. Zij was het die model stond voor intussen klassiek geworden schilderijen als Vrouw met rode arm (1949), Vrouw met revolver (1950) of Vrouw met opsmukspiegeltje (1953). Ook later was het nauwelijks bij te houden hoe dikwijls Raveel haar al dan niet 'en face' op tekeningen, etsen en schilderijen heeft afgebeeld. Hij hoefde er nauwelijks nog bij na te denken. Vanuit de losse pols wist hij haar trefzeker te portretteren. Zulma aan tafel, aan het kaarten, een kruiswoordraadsel aan het oplossen, aan het raam kijkend naar het atelier, enzovoort. Nagenoeg haar hele leven was van Raveels kunstenaarschap vervuld. Ze nam het altijd voor hem op, vocht in de beginjaren tegen de miskenning van zijn werk en aarzelde niet sommige critici de mantel uit te vegen. De jaren hebben haar uiteindelijk gelijk gegeven. De tijd blijft in alle opzichten de meest eerlijke criticus.‎

Through a selection of over 100 world-class drawings created by Flemish artists in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, an insightful and comprehensive overview will be given into how these drawn sheets were used as part of artistic practice, within or beyond the artist's studio. By revealing the drawings' function, rather than on their attribution or iconography, these sheets will become more fully understood through the eyes of contemporary readers. Identifying how and why these sheets were created will render these artworks more accessible to a wider audience. The three main essays will each deal with one of the principal functions of drawings at the time: studies (copies and sketches), designs for other artworks (paintings, prints, tapestries, metalwork, stained glass, sculpture and architecture), and finally the independent drawings. Each essay will discuss the relevant works within their functional context and compared with other related objects. Introductory chapters will focus on what precisely can be considered a drawing, including its materials, media and techniques, in addition to an attempt to explain the notion of Flanders and Flemish art. Emphasis will be placed throughout the catalogue on how Flemish artists collaborated in creating the most astonishing artworks of their time, unveiling their networks and friendships, as well as their travels across Europe, revealing their international importance. ‎Roelant Savery (1578-1639) behoorde tot de grote groep Vlaamse kunstenaars die omstreeks 1600, tijdens de 80-jarige Oorlog, in de Noordelijke Nederlanden terecht zijn gekomen. Daar stonden zij aan de wieg van de grote bloei van de kunst in de zeventiende eeuw. Savery was een zeer veelzijdige tekenaar n schilder, gespecialiseerd in landschappen, dierstukken en bloemstillevens. Met encyclopedische precisie beeldde hij talloze verschillende soorten af: dieren, bloemen maar ook mensen uit diverse contreien, van Boheemse boeren tot joodse gelovigen in de synagoge. Savery werd d schilder van de uitgestorven dodo uit Mauritius. Meer dan tien jaar werkte Savery in dienst van de Habsburgse keizer Rudolf II in Praag, die hem op pad stuurde om de landschappen en mensen van zijn rijk vast te leggen. Afkomstig uit de Lage Landen moeten de watervallen in de Alpen diepe indruk hebben gemaakt op de kunstenaar. Na terugkeer in Nederland vestigde Roelant Savery zich in Utrecht, waar hij achter zijn huis een tuin aanlegde met kostbare bloemen en planten. Zo hoefde hij niet van huis te gaan om inspiratie op te doen voor zijn bloemstillevens.‎

‎This book rediscovers the Antwerp painter Jan Massys (c.1510-1573) and his artistic milieu. / The painter Jan Massys (c. 1510-1573) trained under his father Quinten, succeeding him after his death (1530) at the head of Antwerp's most famous workshop. However, his career, destined for certain success, was abruptly cut short in 1544. Condemned for joining the Loysts sect, he had to flee Antwerp, finding refuge perhaps initially in France and at one point in Italy. Only in 1555 was he able to return to his homeland, regaining his artistic leadership within a few years. His oeuvre consists exclusively of works for private use and is characterized, in particular, by the depiction of elegant and seductive nude or half-naked female figures, protagonists of biblical or mythological subjects. The identification of the patron of the 1561 Venus with the view of Genoa (Stockholm, Nationalmuseum) in the person of the noble Genoese banker Ambrogio di Negro, offered the possibility of reconstructing the social context of the artist's clientele and his relations with those intellectuals ? both Genoese and Flemish-who gave life to the lively humanist academies of Antwerp. The figure emerges of a cultivated and particularly refined painter, who shared with his patrons the ideals of neo-Petrarchan poetry and executed paintings of great preciousness, characterized by a meticulous and skillful painting technique. ‎Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) became one of the leading American Pop artists of the 1960s, rejecting abstract expressionism in favor of the classical representations of the nude, still life, and landscape. He created collages and assemblages incorporating everyday objects and advertising ephemera in an effort to make images as powerful as the abstract expressionism he admired. He is perhaps best known for his Great American Nude series with their fat forms and intense colors. In the seventies, Wesselmann continued to explore the ideas and media which had preoccupied him during the Sixties. Most significantly, his large Standing Still Life series, composed of free standing shaped canvases, showed small intimate objects on a grand scale. In 1980 Wesselmann, using the pseudonym Slim Stealingworth, wrote an autobiography documenting the evolution of his artistic work. He continued exploring shaped canvases (first exhibited in the 1960s) and began creating his first works in metal. He instigated the development of a laser-cutting application, which would allow him to make a faithful translation of his drawings in cut-out metal. The 1990s and early 2000s saw the artist expanding on these themes, creating abstract three-dimensional images that he described as ?going back to what I had desperately been aiming for in 1959.? He had indeed come full circle. In his final years he returned to the female form in his Sunset Nudes series of oil paintings on canvas, whose bold compositions, abstract imagery, and sanguine moods often recall the odalisques of Henri Matisse.‎
