De kunstenaars kregen vaak te maken met tegenslagen, van armoede en buitenlandse concurrentie tot geweld en zelfs moordpartijen. Om weerstand te bieden aan deze beproevingen, zochten ze steun bij elkaar. Zo ontstond het kunstgenootschap de Bentvueghels. Wat volgde was een roerige periode vol drank, beruchte verenigingsrituelen en regels die overschreden werden, met uiteindelijk een verbod van de paus als gevolg. In De Bentvueghels neemt kunsthistoricus Liesbeth M.
