A rare complete set of this early 19th century German dictionary of pure mathematics published in five volumes in six books and a two-volume supplement Supplemente zu G. S. Kluegel's Woorterbuche der reinen Mathematik. Volumes 4 and 5 were co-written by Carl Brandan Mollweide and Johann August Grunert; Grunert authored the supplements. Volume 1: A-D 1803: viii 944 pages 8 folding plates; 2: E-J 1805 956 6 pages 6 folding plates; 3: K-P 1808 933 3 pages 10 folding plates; 4: Q-S 1823 vi 889 1 pages 7 folding plates; 5.1 T-U 1831 iv 589 pages 8 folding plates; 5.2 V-Z 1831 590-1188 1 pages; Supplement 1: A-D 1833 vi 737 1 pages 2 folding plates; Supp. 2: E-Z 1836 1032 pages 4 folding plates. Kluegel 1739-1812 held a variety of academic positions before taking the chair of mathematics at the University of Halle a position he held for 20 years before retiring. As a theoretician his primary work was on parallels and in trigonometry but in the 19th century he was known for this dictionary. He completed three volumes before his death and the work was carried on by Mollweide volume 4 and Grunert vol. 5 and the supplements. According to the St. Andrews University MacTutor History of Mathematics archive 'It was Kleugel's mathematical dictionary however which led to his fame. This was the three volume work Mathematisches Wörterbuch. which appeared between 1803 and 1808. The work includes articles such as 'Abacus' 'Algebra' 'Analysis' 'Geometry' 'Logarithms' 'Parallels' and a host of similar ones. His definitions often illustrate the state of mathematics at this time and are now of interest to historians of mathematics. The dictionary was widely used for several generations making Klügel's name widely known.' Mollweide was also an important German mathematician best remembered for the Mollweide projection of the sphere used in many atlases. Mollweide's best-known student was August Moebius. Kluegel's dictionary of mathematics is quite scarce complete as here in 8 volumes with only a few institutional holdings mostly in Germany. First edition first printing. Very good or better in contemporary cloth and decorated paper bindings; old gymnasium library stamp on each title page; some paper adhesions to the covers of a few volumes but a remarkably well-preserved set.<br> Schwickertschen Verlage and E. First edition dedicated to the famous mathematician Leonhard Euler 1707-1783. Klugel based his writings on that of Euler's work on optics. In his parts VII and VIII he deals with the telescope and especially the microscope. / Euler's own work on the theory of the achromatic microscope was written as early as 1762 and 1771 when he dealt with the subject more fully. In 1774 Euler's pupil and friend Nicolas Fuss wrote a little book on how to construct an achromatic microscope. Klugel translated that work in 1778 and then followed that with this more thorough treatment being his Analytische Dioptrik also 1778. He was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Helmstedt and then was chair of mathematics and physics at the University of Halle. In this compendious work he corrected some of Euler's results and expanded with his own findings. In 1803-31 he published his famous dictionary of mathematics Mathematisches Worterbuch 5 vols. / Provenance II: I Johann Gottfried Kohler 1745-1801 Germen astronomer known for discovering a number of nebulae start clusters and galaxies. He was a colleague of Johann Elert Bode another German astronomer of importance. In 1785 Kohler was appointed jointly director of the Desden Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon and the Kunstkammer. His catalogue of nebulae was published in 1780. He wrote a number of astronomical papers in German and the following in the Philosophical Transactions "Observations on the transit of Mercury 1786 May 4 at Dresden" P.T. 1787. He was a colleague of Johann Elert Bode another German astronomer of importance. In 1785 Kohler was appointed jointly director of the Dresden Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon and the Kunstkammer. His catalogue of nebulae was published in 1780. He wrote a number of astronomical papers in German and the following in the Philosophical Translations "Observations on the transit of Mercury 1786 May 4 at Dresden" 1787. Dr. Edmund Neusser 1852-1912 born in Krakow was appointed in 1893 a full professor and director of medicine in the University of Vienna. Wohl erste Ausgabe. Klügel 1739 - 1812 war Professor für Mathematik und Physik in Helmstedt und Halle. Er war einer der berühmtesten Mathematiker seiner Zeit. Hier verfasste er eine naturkundlich orientierte Arbeit die gegen Ende in allgemein erbaulich-philosophische Ausführungen übergeht. Vorgebunden eine interessante Schrift: Johann Caspar Velthusen "Dritte Fortsetzung der Nachrichten von dem Unternehmen einiger Helmstädtischer Professoren für Nordcarolina". Seite 3-24 von 24 Seiten es fehlt das Titelblatt der Text ist vollständig. Velthusen 1740 - 1814 war Theologieprofessor und u.a. tätig in Göttingen Hameln Gifhorn Kiel und Helmstedt. Mit Henke Klügel u.a. übernahm Velthusen in seiner Helmstedter Zeit das Missionswerk für die evangelischen Gemeinden in North Carolina. Sein "Helmstädtischer Katechismus" erschien denn auch bei Crusius unter dem Titel "Nordcarolinischer Katechismus".
