Paris J. L. Boilly 1822. Engraved broadsheet 36.3 x 27.3 cm. = A rarely-seen portrait of the French polymath chiefly physicist astronomer and mathematician Pierre-Simon Marquis de Laplace. His works were ".important to the development of engineering mathematics statistics physics astronomy and philosophy. He summarized and extended the work of his predecessors in his five-volume Mécanique céleste Celestial Mechanics. This work translated the geometric study of classical mechanics to one based on calculus opening up a broader range of problems. In statistics the Bayesian interpretation of probability was developed mainly by Laplace. Laplace formulated Laplace's equation and pioneered the Laplace transform which appears in many branches of mathematical physics a field that he took a leading role in forming. The Laplacian differential operator widely used in mathematics is also named after him. He restated and developed the nebular hypothesis of the origin of the Solar System and was one of the first scientists to suggest an idea similar to that of a black hole. Laplace is regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time. Sometimes referred to as the French Newton or Newton of France he has been described as possessing a phenomenal natural mathematical faculty superior to that of almost all of his contemporaries" Wikipedia. The artist Julien-Léopold Boilly 1796-1874 was noted for his album of lithographs Iconographie de l'Institut royal de France ou collection des portraits des Membres composant les quatre académies depuis 1814 jusqu'en 1825 1820-1825. His portraits are much less stiff and formal than many by his contemporaries. Signed by the artist in the lower margin of the portrait and dated 1822. The caption states the date of La Place's birth and the years in which he was elected as a member of the Académie and the Institut. Uncut. With in the lower right corner a small oval blindstamp "Galerie Vivienne Bénard". Scattered very mild foxing; a few weak marginal creases; otherwise very good. unknown

An important treatise on crop rotation. La Salle de l'Etang d. 1765 provides one of the earliest systematic plans for rotating food crops with "artificial" pastures allowing tilled lands to rebuild nutrient reserves. In addition the author advocates raising livestock for manure to fertilize dry and sterile lands. In order to facilitate his plan he calls for the establishment of a national bureau of agriculture that would be responsible for record-keeping distributing produce throughout the country in times of famine and regional crises regulating foreign trade in agricultural products and maintaining fair prices. A second edition of La Salle de l'Etang's treatise appeared in 1758 and a third expanded version of 330 pages in 1762 both with a Brussels imprint. Contemporary beige quarter calf patterned brown cloth sides gilt armorial device of the Duc d'Arenberg on both covers. Slight wear to spine. Slight foxing throughout. Very significant documentation of Gutenberg in Strassburg the most important being the first and most important reproductions documents given at the memorable trial of 1439 in which Gutenberg himself was plaintiff. The text of the lawsuit are reprinted "verbatini et literatim" from the ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS now destroyed with a French translation. Also included are reproductions of the WATERMARKS of said documents. All of these precious documents were incinerated during the Prussian bombardment of Strassburg in 1870. <br/><br/>Our special copy comes from the libraries of the Duke d'Arenberg and Bernard Breslauer and contains two extra plates not found in ordinary copies. These handsome full-page plates are stylized reproductions of the woodcuts that were utilized as models for the steel engravings on pp. 16 and 17.<br/><br/>"Whereas Laborde's conclusions have in great part been superseded these excellent and faithful reproductions will always possess a high historical interest. . The work opens with a bibliographical essay on the hypotheses of previous writers and concludes with the results arrived at by the author himself. These are: That 1410 is the probable date of the discovery of printing in the Low Countries; that 1423 is that of the invention of movable types by "Lorenz Coster" at Haarlem; that 1436 is the authentic date of the first experiments of Gutenberg at Strasbourg ; and that 1452 is the certain date of the invention by Gutenberg of cast types at Mayence sic. The rest of the book is occupied by an attempt to establish these theses and there are many facsimiles of type and woodcuts." Bigmore & Wyman I 410. According to Pierce Butler Laborde's work is "of permanent historical scholarly value." "The Gutenberg Celebration of 1940: A Survey of the Literature" in: Library Quarterly vol. 13 no. 1 p. 64. This sentiment is shared by Frederick Goff who described Laborde's work as "valuable for us since it contains lithographic facsimiles of several of the important passages in the testimonies of the lawsuit then extant which is the nearest thing we have to the original documents." Review of Otto Fuhrmann's "Gutenberg and the Strasbourg Documents of 1439" in PBSA vol. 35 no. 1 pp. 76-7. Fuhrmann relied heavily on the present work and reproduced all of Laborde's illustrations and transcriptions. <br/><br/>Laborde transcribed not without errors the texts of the lawsuit of Strassburg resident Jerge Dritzehen against Gutenberg; these were derived from six entries in different parts of three several manuscript registers in the city of Strassburg. According to Laborde the first of these were written in a volume described by later scholars as "Vol. A" which consisted of two quires each of 42 sheets or 84 leaves in total; they were covered by a sheet of parchment which had become yellow and soiled; on the recto was written "Dicta. Testium magni consilij Anno Domini M.CCC. Tricesimo noni." The paper which had turned yellow and brown on the edge measured 10 x 9 inches. The second volume "Vol. B" was bound in parchment and consisted of 24 sheets or 48 leaves of paper sewn together 43 of the leaves being written upon. According to Laborde everything connected with the 1439 Lawsuit was written by the same scribe. Laborde's three illustrations of the watermarks two different bull's head and one balance were printed in sepia; the excellent facsimiles of eleven different passages from the Lawsuit were made from lithographic tracings. All were published here for the first time.<br/><br/>The Marquis de Laborde 1807-1869 studied at Gottingen and afterwards travelled extensively in the East. He subsequently held several diplomatic positions and was curator of the antiquities in the Louvre from 1848 to 1854 and director of the Archives of the Empire from 1856 until his death. He wrote extensively on archeology art printing and engraving.<br/><br/>From the library of the great Belgian bibliophile Prosper-Louis duc d'Arenberg d'Arschot et de Croy 1785-1878 for whom see Jonghe d'Ardoye et al. Armorial Belge du Bibliophile 1930 p. 645 with reproduction of the armorial device. -- subsequently in the famed bibliographical library of B.H. This sentiment is shared by Frederick Goff who described Laborde's work as "valuable for us since it contains lithographic facsimiles of several of the important passages in the testimonies of the lawsuit then extant which is the nearest thing we have to the original documents." <br /> <br /> The text of the Gutenberg lawsuit is reprinted "verbatini et literatim" along with a French translation. Also included are reproductions of the WATERMARKS of said documents. All of these precious documents were incinerated during the Prussian bombardment of Strassburg in 1870. The additional full-page plates in the present copy are stylized reproductions of the woodcuts utilized as models for the steel engravings on pp. 16 and 17.<br /> <br /> "Whereas Laborde's conclusions have in great part been superseded these excellent and faithful reproductions will always possess a high historical interest. . The work opens with a bibliographical essay on the hypotheses of previous writers and concludes with the results arrived at by the author himself. These are: That 1410 is the probable date of the discovery of printing in the Low Countries; that 1423 is that of the invention of movable types by "Lorenz Coster" at Haarlem; that 1436 is the authentic date of the first experiments of Gutenberg at Strasbourg ; and that 1452 is the certain date of the invention by Gutenberg of cast types at Mayence sic. The rest of the book is occupied by an attempt to establish these theses and there are many facsimiles of type and woodcuts." Bigmore & Wyman I 410. <br /> <br /> Laborde transcribed not without errors the texts of the lawsuit of Strassburg resident Jerge Dritzehen against Gutenberg; these were derived from six entries in different parts of three several manuscript registers in the city of Strassburg. According to Laborde the first of these were written in a volume described by later scholars as "Vol. A" which consisted of two quires each of 42 sheets or 84 leaves in total; they were covered by a sheet of parchment which had become yellow and soiled; on the recto was written "Dicta. Testium magni consilij Anno Domini M.CCC. Tricesimo noni." The paper which had turned yellow and brown on the edge measured 10 x 9 inches. The second volume "Vol. B" was bound in parchment and consisted of 24 sheets or 48 leaves of paper sewn together 43 of the leaves being written upon. According to Laborde everything connected with the 1439 Lawsuit was written by the same scribe. Laborde's three illustrations of the watermarks two different bull's head and one balance were printed in sepia; the excellent facsimiles of eleven different passages from the Lawsuit were made from lithographic tracings. All were published here for the first time.<br /> <br /> THE AUTHOR: Marquis de Laborde 1807-1869 studied at Gottingen and afterwards travelled extensively in the East. He subsequently held several diplomatic positions and was curator of the antiquities in the Louvre from 1848 to 1854 and director of the Archives of the Empire from 1856 until his death. With a large lithographed title vignette and the coat of arms of Wilhelm II on the dedication leaf. 69 lithographed plates maps and plans after Laborde and Linant de Bellefonds mostly mounted on India paper including 3 folding and 2 coloured. 8 87 1 pp. The first edition of this "important work" Blackmer: a monumental folio beautifully bound by René Simier 1772-1843 for King Louis-Philippe of France from whose library it came into the hands of the great art collector and founder of the French branch of Rothschilds Baron James de Rothschild.The volume is complete with all the magnificent views in large folio format; all subsequent editions including the English one were published in octavo and retained only a few plates of the original edition all considerably reduced in size. The work was published following the trip undertaken by the Marquis Léon de Laborde 1807-69 and remained famous in particular for its views of Petra and its Khazneh. Laborde made the journey to Petra with the engineer Linant de Bellefonds in 1828 travelling from Suez via St. Catherine's and through Wadi al-Araba to Akabah. Although Burckhardt Irby and Mangles had explored Petra before Laborde he was the first to make detailed drawings of the area.Born in Frankfurt under the Holy Roman Empire James de Rothschild initially moved to Paris to aid his brother Nathan Mayer Rothschild's business there; shortly he established himself and his family at the heart of France's industrial revolution and charted a steady course through the upheavals of 19th century French politics. Elevated to the status of Baron his interest in art was genuine and his collection well-respected.A beautiful text with an important provenance: bound for King Louis-Philippe of France. Latterly in the collection of the banker James Mayer Rothschild 1792-1868 founder of the French branch of the prominent Rothschild family.With the armorial bookplate of James de Rothschild and label of the Château de Ferrières on the front pastedown. Marbled paper subtly and professionally recovered at an early stage. First edition of "an important work" Blackmer of a stunning and beautifully illustrated account of some of the earliest explorations in the Sinai southern Jordan and northwest Arabia complete with all the magnificent views in extremely large format the double-page plates measuring about 58.5 x 83 cm and the folding map of the Sinai about 74 x 102 cm. All subsequent editions including the English one were published in octavo and contained only a few plates based on the present first edition all in drastically reduced format. The plates show maps plans of ancient sites views of ruins and other buildings coastal and other topographic views costume plates hieroglyphic and other inscriptions flora and fauna. Laborde journeyed to the ancient city of Petra in what is now Jordan with the engineer Linant de Bellefonds in 1828 travelling from Suez via St. Catherine's and through Wadi al-Araba to Akabah. The topographic term Arabie Pétrée derives from Ptolemy's division of Arabia into three regions. The maps in the present book show it as the Sinai peninsula the southern part of what is now Jordan and the northwestern part of the Arabian peninsula. The city of Petra itself is extensively documented in many of the present beautiful plates.Slight browning and foxing occasional waterstaining and tears to folds; a small tear in the map repaired but in all a good wide-margined copy in loose sheets apparently never bound.
