Laplace Pierre Simon
Exposition du Systême du Monde
Paris: Imprimerie du Cercle-Social 1796. First edition with half-titles without errata as usual. 314 4; 312 4 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. Contemporary blue-patterned boards contrasting spine labels. Some toning joints just starting heads a bit chipped. Verso of half-title in volume I bears a few bibliographical notes in pencil. Very good. First edition with half-titles without errata as usual. 314 4; 312 4 pp. 2 vols. 8vo. "Among the most influential scientists in all history" - DSB. "Book I begins with what any attentive observer may see if he will open his eyes to the spectacle of the heavens on a clear night with a view of the whole horizon. Book II . sets out the "real" motions of the planets satellites and comets and gives the dimensions of the solar system. Book III is a verbal précis of the laws of motion as understood in eighteenth-century rational mechanics with special reference to astronomy and hydrostatics. In Book IV Laplace in effect summarized his own work in gravitational mechanics. Much of it consists of simplification of the prefatory sections to the published memoirs. The topics are perturbations in planetary motions the shape of the earth the attraction of spheroids and the rings of Saturn motions of the tides and atmosphere the moons of Jupiter precession and lunar motions. Only Book V contains material that Laplace had not written up in technical form or presupposed. It gives an overview of the history of astronomy and concludes with the speculation since called the nebular hypothesis and another on the nature of the universe in outer space." - DSB. Traité de Mécanique Céleste
Folding engraved plate in Vol. IV. Five vols. Large 4to handsome antique blue morocco-backed marbled boards flat spines nicely gilt. Paris: J.B.M. Duprat & others An VII 1798-1825. First edition and a complete set with all the supplements. In this monumental and fundamental astronomical work Laplace -- the "Newton of France" -- codified and developed the theories and achievements of Newton Euler d'Alembert and Lagrange. "Laplace maintained that while all planets revolve round the sun their eccentricities and the inclinations of their orbits to each other will always remain small. He also showed that all these irregularities in movements and positions in the heavens were self-correcting so that the whole solar system appeared to be mechanically stable. He showed that the universe was really a great self-regulating machine and the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a long step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this respect.Laplace also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth -- a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. He also investigated the theory of the tides and calculated from them the mass of the moon."Printing & the Mind of Man 252. Clean and fine.

First printing of Laplace's famous double-memoir in which he made a coupling of probability theory with astronomy. The first memoir here is his third memoir on probability a follow-up of his groundbreaking paper "Mémoire sur la Probabilité des Causes par les Évènemens" from the same year; the main portion of the paper deals with the theory of chances. He solves different problems that of odd and even a solid has p equal faces which are numbered 22.p: required the probability that in the course of n throws the faces will occur in the order of 12.p. a complicate problem arising with more players the Problem of Points in the case of two players and with 3 players on Duration and Play."The present memoir may be regarded as a collection of examples in the history of Finite Differences"Todhunter. The second memoir constitutes Laplace's "FIRST COMPREHENSIVE PIECE ON THE MECHANICS OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM" and his theory of the gravitational force. His modifications of Newton's laws set forth here became the foundation for his developed celestial mechanics."A close reading of the astronomical part of the dual memoir Laplace’s first comprehensive piece on the mechanics of the solar system serves to temper the conventional image of a vindicator of Newton’s law of gravity against the evidence for decay of motion in the planets. Nothing is said about apparent anomalies gathering toward a cosmic catastrophe;on the contrary the state of the universe is assumed to be steady. The problem is not whether the phenomena can be deduced from the law of universal gravity but how to do it. Since that appeared to be impossible on a strict Newtonian construction of the evidence Laplace proposed modifying the law of gravity slightly. He proceeded to try out the notion that gravity is a force propagated in time instead of instantaneously. Its quantity at a given point would then depend on the velocity of bodies as well as on their mass and distance. Even more interesting the reasoning in this argument was not that of normal mathematical astronomy but was of the type that he brought to physics in other much later writings. Lastly in a problem that he did handle in the tradition of theoretical astronomy namely in the secular variations in the mean motions of Jupiter and Saturn the conclusion is that the mutual attraction of the plants cannot account for them contrary to what we expect from Mécanique céleste."DSB. unknown

LAPLACE, Pierre Simon de; TOPLIS, Rev John (trans)
A treatise upon analytical mechanics; being the first book of the Mecanique celeste of M. Le Comte Laplace . translated and elucidated with explanatory notes
Nottingham: H. Barnett 1814. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. With 1 large folding engraved plate. Modern boards spine label; interior clean. Overall an excellent copy from the library of Dr. Sydney Ross with his small book label on the paste-down. First edition in English the first effort at an English translation which presumably got no further. The complete English translation was done by the Nathaniel Bowditch and published Boston 1829-1839.

In Laplace’s monumental Mecanique celeste first published between 1799 and 1827 all the laws of planetary motion are deduced from the concept of universal gravity. He argued that the universe was really a great self-regulating machine and that the whole solar system could continue on its existing plan for an immense period of time. This was a great step forward from the Newtonian uncertainties in this area. He also offered a brilliant explanation of the secular inequalities of the mean motion of the moon about the earth a problem which Euler and Lagrange had failed to solve. Specifically the first book treats the general laws of balance and motion and the universal law of gravity as well as the movement of the centers of gravity of celestial bodies.

Laplace 1749-1827 considered the Isaac Newton of France was one of the most influential scientists in the fields of mathematics celestial mechanics and physics. Not much is known about the translator John Toplis. He lived in Nottingham and was likely acquainted with his neighbor the mathematician George Green. H. Barnett unknown
