Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles imprisonment and finally the guillotine" Encyclopaedia Britannica online. In this period he is notable for being perhaps the most vocal opponent of the ascendant physiocrats with this book attacking their ideas within the framework of his support for the establishment of new canals. "Linguet's 1769 book was not an engineer's but rather a project designer's who discussed the usefulness assets and flaws of existing canals. He submitted several constructions in different French provinces. The epistolary form of his work allowed him to change subjects frequently and broach peripheral questions" Kaplan & Sophus Reinert The Economic Turn: Recasting Political Economy in Enlightenment Europe. It was from these peripheral questions that he could attack the physiocrats and their "agromania & the passion to write these past few years on economic matters" those who "pretended to be shepherds in the middle of Paris" and "sowed their seeds on their own writing tables". That said at this stage Linguet does not fundamentally oppose phyisocrat arguments to liberalize the grain trade and he does not offer detailed economic assessments of physiocratic thought - in keeping with his controversialist ways he mainly opposes physiocracy as he saw it as the latest fad and disliked its adherents. Berlin: no publisher 1786. First edition in German of Linguet's treatise on syphilis first printed in French in 1766 as La Cacomonade. Linguet chose as his pseudonym Pangloss the optimistic teacher in Voltaire's Candide who is blighted by syphilis. Linguet presents the book as a supplement to Voltaire's work although this German edition identifies him as the author. Linguet's choice of pseudonym is an interesting attribution and was probably an attempt to capitalize on the success of Candide which had proved highly popular undergoing seventeen editions in its publication year of 1759 alone. Linguet's treatise on syphilis traces the origins of the disease as with Voltaire tracing it to the sailors of Columbus and proposes measures to stem its spread. Linguet 1736-1794 was a respected lawyer indeed perhaps the most renowned lawyer in France in the 1760s and 1770s but was fond of being a controversialist with his wide-ranging polemics on history politics and law garnering him many enemies. He eventually ended up under the guillotine's knife as a reactionary but was re-appraised by Marx and other 19th-century socialists due to his critiques of free wage labour as disguised servitude. Exposing the bread conspiracy First edition of this incisive attack on physiocracy by the habitual contrarian and one-time physiocrat published as the first two parts of this six-part collected edition of his works. This set also includes the first edition of Linguet's Du Pain et du Bled and a revised edition of the Théorie des loix civiles first published in 1767 his critique of Enlightenment liberalism. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 was among the most renowned lawyers in France during the 1760s and 1770s until his attacks on colleagues led to his expulsion from the bar in 1775. Voltaire observed of his streak of nonconformity that "Paris too has its Jean-Jacques Rousseau" quoted in Vyverberg p. 476. The works published here inveigh against multiple aspects of the pre-revolutionary status quo including physiocratic notions of liberty and the dependence of the French upon bread. The Théorie des loix civiles opened Linguet's campaign again the physiocrats but did not target them by name: the Plus Heureux Gouvernement by contrast directly charged that physiocratic concepts of liberty were opportunistic shams designed to enrich the elite. Linguet's Du Pain et du Bled On Wheat and Bread tackles the systemic dependence of the French peasantry on bread contending - perhaps hyperbolically - that it was a fundamentally harmful food responsible in large part for the grim health of the poor. A response by Tissot 1728-1797 published at Neufchatel in 1779 is bound in this volume. 2 works in 5 vols octavo 163 x 91 mm. With 2 folding letterpress tables. Amsterdam: n.p. 1770. First edition part of a series of publications by the controversialist Linguet opposing reform to France's ancién regime this a particularly well-preserved copy. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles imprisonment and finally the guillotine" Encyclopaedia Britannica online. Throughout the 1760s and 1770s Linguet was perhaps the most renowned lawyer in France widely esteemed for his eloquence and legal acumen until his attacks on other lawyers led to his expulsion from the bar in 1775. Linguet opposed reform in his magnum opus Théorie des Loix civiles 1767. In the present work he continued his arguments and responded to criticisms. He specifically rejects the notion that the English are free and that their institutions provide a model for the French a popular idea among philosophes and criticizes Montesquieu's analysis of laws and the state. Linguet also counters physiocratic objections to his ideas which were printed in the Éphémérides du citoyen specifically with regard to grain regulation. Duodecimo.
