[Cameron, Simon]
FROM DOCUMENT NO. 229 OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 3D SESSION 25TH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES CONTAINING ALLEGATIONS OF FRAUD "IN RELATION TO THE SETTLEMENT OF THE CLAIMS OF THE HALF-BREED RELATIVES OF THE WINNEBAGOE INDIANS" IN WHICH CASE THE COMMISSION OF GENERAL SIMON CAMERON WAS SET ASIDE. Caption-title: TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA. EXECUTION OF TREATY WITH THE WINNEBAGOES.
Harrisburg 1855. 48pp. Stitched in original printed blue title wrappers spine-chipped. Two stab holes in blank left margin. Light scattered foxing old vertical fold Very Good. <br /> <br /> This document says Howes was reprinted "to discredit" Cameron a Pennsylvania kingmaking politician who stuffed his pockets with the spoils of a panoply of public offices. In 1838 President Van Buren made him an Indian Commissioner in charge of settling the Winnebago Indian land claims. The appointment ended in scandal when he used his own bank's notes as part of the adjustment. He became derisively known as "The Great Winnebago Chief." The front wrapper quoting from the St. Louis Reporter calls Cameron's activities "infamous speculation." <br /> Bibliographers-- recording only a 38-page pamphlet under this title-- conclude that this pamphlet was printed in 1839. That seems unlikely. Original House Document 229 was printed during the 25th Congress in 1839. This reprint was published to thwart Cameron's designs on a U.S. Senate seat and was probably printed in 1855: he was running for the Senate that year and a related pamphlet entitled a Rejoinder to the Defence Published by Simon Cameron also issued in 1855. Each of them exposes Cameron's shady business dealings during his term as Indian Commissioner. "Plot of Simon Cameron and fellow rascals to defraud these Indians of half a million dollars frustrated by a young army officer E.A. Hitchcock" Howes. <br /> OCLC's seven locateions as of June 2026 are all collated at 38 pages with an 1839 publication date. Field 1686 and Howes W569 38pp. unknown

[CHINA -- CHINESE CIVIL WAR & MISSION BUILDING]. [GEBHARDT, Arnold; SIMON, Gertrude (Photographers); MUELLER, Reinhold "RJ" (Pho
Enshih formerly Shihnan picture album. Building Committee. . . ; Description of pictures by numbers. . . An outstanding photo album filled with numbered photographs together with descriptive list and introduction by Rev. Mueller assembled following the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod missionaries return to Shihnan station in the aftermath of the Communist-Nationalist Civil War 1927-1930.
Enshih Shihnan Hubei China: R.J. Mueller Rev. Gebhardt Miss Simon LCMS ca. 1930-1937. Two vols. 1st - Oblong folio. 11.25 x 15 in. 48 pp unpaginated. thick black paper stock w/ 103 original silver gelatin photographs sized 2.75 x 3.5 in. all neatly numbered in ink MS at corners affixed to the leaves. Contemporary black flexible board post-binder punch-sewn & glued at spine in black paper paper title label partially torn on front cover Building Committee title label affixed to first page minor chipping edgewear to fore-edges some scuffing tidemark to fore-edges still a VG- exemplar w/ all images with bright strong contrast; 2nd - 4to. 8 leaves carbon copy typescript on onion-skin ruled paper some ink annotations corrections 1 pencil MS annotated correction still VG signed by R.J. Mueller on first leaf dated April 24 1937 from the library of David G. Kohl 1946-2025 former art teacher at the Hong Kong International School musician artist and historian. A remarkable photo album with images shot by three different Lutheran Church Missouri Synod LCMS missionaries in China along with the descriptive contents list compiled by Rev. R.J. Mueller detailing the purpose and composition. He writes that the Enshih Shihnan Mission had prepared three albums “one for the Mission Board one for the Building Committee of General Conference and one at the Enshih Station. The numbers all agree. However not all pictures listed appear in all books.†This “Building Committee†album was intended to focus primary on the structures homes chapels of the mission as well as surrounding areas and was intended to aid in speeding up communications for fundraising and building affairs issues as correspondents could then merely refer to the master list of numbers held by all three parties. Enshih China was one of the final mission stations established by the LCMS far from their other missions and when Gebhardt returned to Enshih following the Civil War in 1928 there was significant damage to the mission structures to be repaired. Looting by bandits and marauding soldiers had caused over $ 2000 in damage but was encouraged to find that the Lutheran evangelist Shen had continued the mission chapel school orphanage. He would later be joined by Mueller and others although primarily composed of Chinese Staff. These photos in the album includes views of Mueller’s residence windows frames and gutters looted; screens torn doors boarded up as well as views of the native house and threshing floor adapted into an orphanage at Yao Wan after 1930. Several others show the extent of the protective walls built around the properties farm houses the gates as well as farms bridges and nearby fields at Enshih. Landmarks such as rocks shaped like Elephants in the river and Big and Little Hog creek below farmland. A very nice series of photos depict the Ts’i Ts-ung-fu funeral the blind deaf and other orphans about 1931 as well as textiles drying in the sun. Other photos capture the Ch’i-li-ping market fortune teller temple noodle stand and the T’ai shan shrine at Ch’i-li-p’ing. More photos depict Hu Ping-chih the orphanage secretary Yuen Ye-chih cashier in 1934 Hsieh T’i-ya seminary student who died later in 1937; along with the mission pulpit nearby streets and the rear view of the Yao Wan houses.Of additional interest are the images of the rugged roads to Liang Shui-chin the temple and steep steps drying opium in Kuan-p’e which was a small town between the East Gate and Yao Wan before opium raising was banned in 1934; along with the nearby Ch’ing-Ching Clear River at the high water stage the front of the True Light Chapel in 1934 as well as the gravestone of Mr. & Mrs. Wang Japanese-Lutherans who had died in 1930. The final photo No. 169 again shows the Clear River below the city. Mueller 1905-1998 graduated from seminary in 1929 and left for China with his wife Dorothy for the Evangelical Lutheran Foreign Mission Board returned briefly to the U.S. from 1937-1940 spent 1939-1942 teaching at a Lutheran seminary in China while being bombed by the Japanese and also served in Shanghai where he would supervise the Lutheran Hour and Lutheran Hour offices. Although he and his wife briefly returned to the United States in 1946 following World War II they subsequently served again in Shanghai China into the early years of Communist rule by Mao tse-tung before returning again to the U.S. See: David Kohl Lutherans on the Yangtze: A Hundred Year History of the Missouri Synod in China 2014 pp. 103 124 131 132 166 174 99-131. A STUDY OF CHINESE PAINTINGS IN THE COLLECTION OF ADA SMALL MOORE with SUPPLEMENT - A STUDY OF CHINESE PAINTINGS
London: Oxford University Press 1940. First Edition. Illustrated with 56 collotype plates 48 concerning paintings and represented by 36 full-page monochrome plates 3 full-page color plates 7 manifold monochrome plates and 2 manifold color plates. The remaining plates are composed of 5 full-page plates of calligraphy and 3 full-page plates of seals. The multi-folding plates provide the opportunity to view an entire painted scroll or long painting. Title-page printed in red and black. 72 paintings from pre-T'ang times into the Ch'ing dynasty are discussed. Each painting is described and the translation of its seals and inscriptions provided. Large Folio 15.25" x 11.5" publisher's original green polished buckram cloth the spine lettered in gilt the upper cover with gilt decoration of a Chinese seal. xvi 279 plates pp. A fine copy especially clean and bright the binding very strong and showing virtually no wear though with the mark of a cup which at some time was placed on the upper cover. The Supplement is in fine condition as well. FIRST EDITION SCARCE. The Moore collection contains extraordinary illustrations from some of them most important painters and calligraphers in the long history of Chinese art. The subject matter of the book is traversed by the authors of the volume with scholarship and taste their text being accompanied by the fine illustrations most of them in monochrome and some in colour. The authors are full and illuminating in their descriptions their biographical and bibliographical contributions along with their treatment of the inscriptions and seals. The reason for bringing the inscriptions and seals into the foreground is because "calligraphy has long been considered a major art by the Chinese who frequently valued the inscription on a painting as highly or even more highly than the painting itself. A number of the scrolls depicted have inscriptions which certify their authenticity and are also the calligraphy of famous scholars. These contain many valuable comments on the technique of painting and statements of historical and biographical importance. The seals on the scrolls are not only works of art in themselves but are important as a record of the painting or as an expression of appreciation of it."<br> The painters represented come from various dynasties in their noblest estate painters eloquent of the great virtues of the school--a peculiar magic in the interpretation of nature felicity in composition and linear aspect. The plates provide well the Chinese ideas of beauty and style. R. Cortissoz Oxford University Press hardcover

In World War I she served with the Royal Navy and was sunk by a U-boat in 1917. SS Ortona was the last ship that Pacific Steam built for the London-to-Australia route. Launched on 10 July 1899 and registered in Liverpool on 26 October she left London on her maiden voyage was on 24 November in a joint service with the Orient Steam Navigation Company. She carried 140 first-class 180 second-class and 300 third-class passengers a total of 620. In December 1902 Ortona was used to return troops to the UK after the end of the Second Boer War. On 8 May 1906 Ortona was sold to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company who used her in a joint operation with the Orient line to Australia. The "All Golds" professional New Zealand Rugby League team travelled on Ortona from Australia to France via Ceylon in August/September 1907. In April 1909 she was transferred to the Royal Mail West Indies service. In 1910 she was sent to the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast for conversion into a 320-capacity cruise ship with a new gross tonnage of 8939. She was renamed RMS Arcadian on 21 September 1910 as the RMSP's liners had names beginning with the letter "A" and was registered at Belfast in September of the following year. She started her first world cruise in January 1912 the largest dedicated cruise ship in the world at that time. She was on the first leg of this voyage that Olave St Claire Soames met Lieutenant General Sir Robert Baden-Powell the founder of the Scout Movement leading to their marriage in October of that year. In February 1915 near the start of the First World War Arcadian was taken up by the Admiralty and converted to an armed merchant cruiser. On 7 April 1915 at Alexandria General Sir Ian Hamilton came aboard and used Arcadian together with the battleship Queen Elizabeth as his headquarters ship during the opening phase of the Gallipoli Campaign. Once Hamilton's staff had transferred to a shore base at Imbros Arcadian was employed as a troop ship in the Mediterranean. On 15 April 1917 Arcadian was en route from Thessaloniki Salonika to Alexandria with a company of 1335 troops and crew and escorted by a Japanese Navy destroyer. Shortly after completing a boat drill while 26 miles north east of the Greek island of Milos Arcadian was hit by a single torpedo from the German submarine SM UC-74 and sank within six minutes with the loss of 279 lives. A contemporary newspaper article described how four of Arcadian's overcrowded lifeboats were successfully lowered before she sank. Some of the dead were cooks and stokers who were working below decks. The escorting destroyer had two torpedoes launched at her while she was attempting to rescue men from the water; survivors reported that she had lowered three of her own boats while going "at full speed". More survivors who had been clinging to a raft were rescued at midnight by the Q-ship HMS Redbreast. Among the dead was the eminent bacteriologist Sir Marc Armand Ruffer who was returning to Alexandria after advising on the control of an epidemic among troops based at Thessaloniki.
